cyrusr Posted January 3, 2020 VT Supporter Share Posted January 3, 2020 Question for those that have been watching u23s this season - how has Viljami Sinisalo been playing? Wondering whether he would be good enough to stick on the bench until Steer comes back from injury.

OutByEaster? Posted January 3, 2020 Moderator Share Posted January 3, 2020 He's looked okay, nothing that really sticks in the mind, but he's done alright. I think with Sarkic called back though he'll be number four for the moment.

My thinking was that if Sarkic is getting 1st team football, isn't that better experience for him than sitting on bench? Particularly if Steer is going to be back in February/March, Sarkic is then back to U23s for the rest of the season in any event and feel that he would be better to stay at Livingston if possible.

I mostly agree, for Sarkic it would be much better staying at Livingstone and playing first team football than coming here to spend time on the bench at best - but you can see where the club are coming from too, we'll want to know we've got sufficient cover for the position.

HanoiVillan
Finished 4-0, Ramsey got the 4th. Good result, though from the table Sunderland are obviously hopeless.
BOF Posted January 7, 2020 Author Moderator Share Posted January 7, 2020 Stats updated. A very comfortable 4-0 home win against this season's ragdoll, Sunderland who have managed 1 draw and 13 defeats this season (1-1 at Stoke in case you're wondering). We were three up after 8 minutes. Vassilev's senior debut clearly put a spring in his step as his brace after only 4 minutes puts him joint top of our scoring charts this season alongside star player Jacob Ramsey. Two surprising results elsewhere in the division mean we leapfrog both Middlesbrough & Stoke as they were both beaten at home by 2nd bottom Norwich & Swansea respectively. The battle of the runaway leaders at the top ended in a 2-0 win to home side West Ham. We've now scored 16 and conceded 4 in 4 games since the move to Bodymoor Heath (and 3 of those 4 were in a 5-3 victory!). Roll on the trip to Norwich this Friday and happy new year!
Popular Post OutByEaster? Posted January 7, 2020 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted January 7, 2020 I went to this one last night, it was a really interesting insight into mentalities. i'll start with Sunderland. They're clearly not a great side, results and this game show it - but in fairness to them, they fought and battled to the end - they look like a team that are used to losing, but that losing no longer dampens their spirit, they just play - it hasn't broken them. They hit the post had a couple of chances and might have had a penalty - but then things are easier when you're already three down after eight minutes. You almost wonder if they're a little bit afraid of not losing - I think they're better than their results show, but I'm not sure they believe it. For us, being three up after eight minutes is odd and it affected our game a bit - with things won, young players maybe started to think a little more about getting themselves on the scoresheet or doing things that looked good - rather than the really good team play that had got us to that position. They didn't get lazy, we were always comfortable and always first to the ball and working hard, but some of the sharpness went once the game was obviously won. The goals were all good, with the second one probably the pick of them, a great bit of movement from Vassilev, coming toward the ball then spinning off the defender into the space behind him - a nice ball over the top and then the confidence to wait for just the right moment to stroke it into the corner. What would have trumped that was a tremendous run from the edge of his own box by Ramsey who went straight through the Sunderland side, going box to box and beating half a dozen players before a slightly heavy touch at the crucial moment allowed the keeper to dive at his feet and stop him scoring an absolute beauty. Vassilev looked confident off the back of his first team appearance and could have had four in a very decent hour of forward play, Ramsey too was involved and busy and full of those little glimpses of class he gives you. I thought Archer was excellent and his assist for our fourth goal was a really good run. I think I'd save a special bit of credit though for Clarke and Ben Guy who tackled and moved and passed and controlled everything in the middle of the park - allowing everyone else to play. A mixed night for Tyreik Wright who particularly toward the end of the first half looked really frustrated watching everything his team mates touched turn to goals whilst he got all the unlucky bounces and made all the unseen runs = his body language was a picture of frustration and he might learn more from that than he would have from adding to the scoreline. The back four were very good - Suliman had a really good game, Rowe and Bridge did well and the skipper, Walker gave another performance of spirit, organisation, strength and quality - I'm a little more impressed every time I watch him play. One notable thing was that, unless my eyes deceive me, this team is growing stronger physically each time I see them - I used to take a little joy in the giant calves of Jake Walker, but the rest of him has caught up - he's a rock of a man suddenly. Cameron Archer used to look like he'd struggle to knock a pig over, but he's filled out and looked stronger than I'd ever seen him. In fact, with just a couple of exceptions, the whole side seems to have filled out some - and our keeper, Jamie Searle is a giant of a man; he's been changing the bulbs at home since before he finished Junior school. Bodymoor Heath remains the home of goals and we looks a good side at the moment - we're organised, we're balanced, there are good partnerships and good heads all over the pitch and we both create chances and put them away - but I'd offer one warning - sometimes at this level you don't want a good side, you want two genius's dragging a bundle of triers to new heights - it's the genius's that make that first team difference, not the good players. In this side at the moment there are lots of players that have solid professional career written all over them - the next challenge for this group is making sure those professional careers are at the level they all want them to be at. As things stand - they look pretty darned good at this level and they're well worth a watch. As a special treat, here's another terrible picture, this one of Mungo Bridge getting a bit of treatment for a bang on the head: 1

AndyClarke
Went to the Sunderland game the other night, OBE's description is spot on, particularly with Tyreik's frustrating evening. The lad needs to be more aggressive but he is classy and his movement is terrific. Decent group at this level, not totally convinced that there are many who will step up to 1st team on any kind of regular basis. Very impressed with infrastructure, the staff made supporters feel very welcome, really excellent facility and a pleasure to visit.
