    I think Indian conditions contributed to it too. English wickets just generally make for more exciting cricket IMO. And the weather seemed to exhaust a lot of the players, as well as creating very different conditions in each innings which meant a lot of games were won on the toss. Although I thought the first semi final was a decent match until the final overs.

    I think it's worse than that - the far right outside Israel are trying to exploit Jewish / Muslim differences in their own societies, and position themselves as "friends" of the Jewish community and opponents of Antisemitism for reasons that have little to do with Israel's own far-right politics, but everything to do with stoking up hatred in their own societies.

    Yeah maybe my difference is I'm happy to eat a decent portion of carbs with most meals... although I cut back a bit on carbs if I haven't exercised much that day or the previous day. But I try to do it all without too much conscious effort or keeping track of my intake. Combine that with plenty of movement and a regular gym routine, and I'm in the best shape I've been in, without feeling like I'm working hard for it. Other tricks that help - bowl of soup before a main meal. Eating the healthiest bit of the meal (veg, salad, whatever) before you start on the meat and carbs. Drinking more water. And really prioritising your sleep. Take it seriously, invest in it.

    Agree with all this, but don’t you agree there are plenty of equally despicable characters on the Israeli side who are corrupt, disingenuous, and outsourcing all the risk to others? Somehow the more reasonable voices on both sides need to become more prominent and influential again. Getting rid of Netanyahu (and not replacing him with a similar personality) would help a lot.

    Doesn’t it come down to who will still bear a grudge and who can just laugh it off as ancient history? I’ve had good social gatherings with people I had fights with in my teens and twenties because it didn’t really bother us after so much time, but then I’ve seen family members hold on to a grudge into their 90s and gone to the grave with it.

    Well I eat a healthy diet (most of the time) but it’s not a big conscious effort where I’m doing calorie counting etc. Just try to include plenty of vegetables in every meal and then you lose the urge to overeat carbs etc

    Been following this guy on Twitter for a while and his advice really works Basically his view is that people don’t do anywhere near enough light intensity exercise - walking, standing up, moving your body around - and don’t keep their stress levels low enough, don’t schedule enough rest into their lives. If you can do a couple of hours a day of just moving around, and then one day a week where you’re on the move for a good 4-6 hours, your body starts to adapt, and becomes better at burning fat. Basically you need to kill the sedentary lifestyle, and then add a small amount of more intense exercise (weights, cardio) on top of that. He also stresses the importance of doing exercise you actually enjoy, rather than always seeing it as a punishment for overeating. Anyway, I’ve been trying to do that for the last 6 mths or so, and without paying too much attention to my diet, am finding it much easier to stay in shape and not feel beaten up by the more intense exercise regime I was trying to follow before. Sleeping better, generally happier.

    Toney is a more technical striker which would suit Arsenal better probably. Watkins is just a really solid all round striker, great injury record, belongs at a team where your squad is a bit thinner, he can be the main man, and you’re prioritising that week-in-week-out reliability. And as we saw against Forest, not the best against a packed defence, which is what a side like Arsenal will face most weeks. But in terms of wider market value, I don’t think there’s much between the two. Both offer a decent goal return. Just different player profiles.

    I don’t think it is alt right trolling. I think it’s a pretty faithful reflection of one of the mainstream points of view on one side of the debate. And sadly much the same perspective exists on the other side. It shows why this situation is so difficult.

    What right does anyone have to a plot of land? We all know it originates with someone centuries or thousands of years ago, or maybe just 50 years ago, forcibly taking it from someone else. Any argument that assumes this wasn’t the case is absurd. The way we’ve since resolved this is with nation states and property rights and capitalism. You can rail against the rights and wrongs of that, but Israel / Palestine is no different in this regard from any other country. So ultimately it’s a question of what happens now, what the political and diplomatic approach to securing peace is. To dismiss Palestinians as merely “villagers” on land that was up for grabs is as absurd as dismissing multigenerational Israeli Jewish families in Tel Aviv as thieves. The solution has to be forward looking, not an endless and pointless debate about the past.

    And worse, this is the kind of game where we are depending on someone like Zaniolo to do something special. We can forgive someone like Watkins having a quiet game because it was never really set up for him, but Zaniolo should be thriving in this kind of game

    The stats don’t really tell the story though - we rarely had a clearcut opportunity, and when we did we squandered it badly. It wasn’t luck, it was a smart game plan from Forest.

    The problem with scoring most of your goals from quick transitions is when you play in games where they don’t allow you any transitions at all. That’s the next step I think. The fact it was an away game is largely irrelevant IMO - it’s more a tactical and player profile thing. Most of our attacking talent looks much better when they can run into space. Also, if you concede 2 goals, you lose most of the time anyway. That was just poor defending.

    One of those days. Thought we played well at times, but just lacked the quality to unlock a well drilled defence, and then got sucker punched a couple of times which was always going to be their game plan… they executed well. We look much better when we can use our pace and attack on the transition. In this game it was tighter and suited a more technical approach in and around the box, which we just weren’t able to execute. I gave MOTM to Luiz because he was tidy but tbh everyone was poor today. Some nice moments from Digne and Torres in possession, but nothing to write home about. On to the next game

    No worries, but don’t you agree that it shows that most of the Palestinian population really don’t deserve what is happening to them right now? And I say this as someone who thinks the attack on Israel was absolutely, utterly indefensible too. Can’t we oppose atrocities against innocent civilians without saying one side deserves them more than the other? I feel like sometimes this whole debate is devoid of any humanity.

    The link shows that Hamas got 44% of the vote in 2006, on a turnout of 75%. So about 33% of the 2006 population can take some responsibility, and an even smaller fraction of the present day population.

    Yeah and that’s why I think Emery will hold him to different standards from a senior pro. He’ll be more forgiving of lapses of judgment, and he’ll give him more chances to **** up, but ultimately he’ll want him to buy into the process. The thing that has surprised me about Emery at Villa is how good a man manager he is. I knew he was a great tactician, but behind the awkward demeanour, he seems to have a good sense of how to handle people. Fairly confident he’ll work out how to deal with Jhon Duran and they’ll end up in a good place.

    I think as far as opinion in this thread goes I am closer to yours than most, so worth trying to find some common ground maybe. Wasn’t claiming the Palestinian leadership have done even an okay job, nor that their leadership can be absolved of responsibility… but there are still many innocent civilians who are completely powerless and blameless. In the same way we shouldn’t hold Israelis (or even worse, the wider Jewish population) responsible for the crimes of leaders and governments, we shouldn’t hold Palestinians responsible for the actions of theirs. Try to stay calm in the debate, even if the situation itself is completely shocking for all involved. I know that’s much easier for me to say as someone with no dog in the fight, and I sympathise with your position, but you’re picking fights with people who are open to listening and discussing rationally. Edit: and FWIW, to draw a parallel example, I feel exactly the same way about ordinary Russians, who many expect to stand up to Putin despite the deluge of propaganda and appalling odds if they even wanted to act. Civilians are mostly innocent in these situations.

    Let’s be realistic, no state exists in an isolated vacuum. There has been an awful lot of interference in Palestinian state building by Israel, other neighbours, western powers, and so on, and you can’t necessarily blame ordinary Palestinians split across two separate territories for not making a stellar job of this in the circumstances. Hamas itself was sponsored by elements in Israel to displace the PLO and Fatah, and there has been blowback from that. Israel’s most conciliatory leader was assassinated by a fellow Israeli. The story is complex, and there is lots of blame to throw around. In answer to your first question, yes I believe Israel has a right to exist in something like its current form, but it does not have the right to act with impunity whenever that is threatened.
