  1. How many points did we have at that point? Genuine question as I can’t find the stats. i looked at the final standings and we had 62 points after 38 games which is 1.6 ppg vs 2.1ppg so far this season. If we continue that form we finish the season with 78 points. How’s your maths? Does that sound good enough for you? More generally, I’ve no problem with you thinking 08/09 was the time of your life- you go for it mate. But don’t piss on other people on this forum’s parade for having the temerity to enjoy what’s going on under emery. Maybe you an I will meet one day in 10 years and you’ll tell me glowingly how amazing life was under O’Neill and I’ll argue that it was better under emery. Who knows who will be right but I have a suspicion it won’t be you
  2. Don’t apologise mate- some people think it’s a crime to be positive on these forums
  3. We never mounted “title challenges” under O’Neill so your memory is very much selective. Im 32 and this is the best season in my living memory so far- sorry if that offends you
  4. Very true but as we’ve seen from this thread, the source can vary in quality from SSN to some guy hanging out in the priory’s bathroom
  5. Can the Mods have guidance stopping posts like this? If you’re not gonna provide the source then these types of posts just create more annoyance/ and confusion. It’s so easy to do- just say where you read it
  6. Just while we’re still on Jermaine Jenas, I’ll never forget a BBC article from 2016 where he recollected his experience of the January transfer window. Specifically this quote: “My loan move to Aston Villa in August 2011 and transfer to QPR in January 2013 were on transfer deadline days too. I joined Martin O'Neill at Villa who had been chasing me for a long time and I was going to be one of the bigger players at the club.” O’Neill left the club over a year before his arrival so either he’s even thicker than he comes across or (more likely) he lies in his articles to make himself look better.
  7. Jermaine Jenas is one of those people who, without exception, you should think the opposite of what they say and you’ll be closer to the truth. Let’s test it: “Everyone is looking at his team now and thinking 'this is Spurs', because they aren’t so depleted - and I am not confident about their chances of making the top four when they get their players fit. I certainly don’t think they will finish above Villa, who I thought were impressive on Sunday - they played against a second-string Spurs side and ensured they got over the line.“ Yep- makes much more sense. We can call this the Jenas test
  8. The Gregg Evans- Jacob Tanswell upgrade was the best Villa related transfer of the summer

Some links for your consideration in case you need help with the definition of “letting England down”: https://www.skysports.com/amp/football/news/11095/12104281/harry-maguires-red-card-for-england-against-denmark-caps-miserable-time-for-manchester-united-captain https://metro.co.uk/2022/09/27/harry-maguire-issues-apology-after-costly-mistake-in-englands-draw-against-germany-17455946/amp/ https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/harry-maguire-england-scotland-owngoal-30926611.amp
  10. Luton was my first game at VP and he impressed me the most- better than expected in person. Classy on the ball but also noticeable how many individual fuels he won as well which was more surprising

    Lefties

If I’m calculating right (excuse the pun) the only right footed signing emery has made so far has been tielemans - and he was on a free so clearly we don’t like paying money for right footers(!) moreno, Duran, pau, diaby, zaniolo, lenglet,
  12. Seems like the latest of many incidents like these involving Marseille
  13. They drew with arsenal. And they were very lucky to beat Liverpool given the wrongly disallowed Luiz goal and Liverpool only conceding in the last minute. Lose that game and they’re basically bang in line with us in the table having played significantly easier fixtures
  14. Why are they treating shirt design as if it’s rocket science? Just give us the same shirt but in a sensible material like every other club in the league
  15. True but think about who his audience is: Belgian fans presumably wondering why he should be picked in the team when he’s only on the bench for his club. It’s understandable that he’s gonna be inclined to say that he’s not happy being on the bench. I do think some fans are overreacting to the press thing and implying tielemans was actively using the press to pressure emery which wasn’t really the case
  16. I want this donkey out of my club. Can’t cross, can’t pass and physically child like
  17. I note that in the Chelsea-Burnley game, this exact thing happened without the world imploding. A goal was scored, play then restarted but the VaR officials then told the ref to stop the game so they could finish the VaR check. According to Dean (and some folks in this thread I might add) this is absolute sacrilege and a worse offence than what happened in the Liverpool-spurs game last week
  18. I’m not sure there was a problem with Buendia and Watkins “clicking”. Buendia was very effective at feeding through balls to Watkins and Watkins made decent runs to get on the end of them showing a decent chemistry between the two in build up play. But Watkins isn’t very effective at scoring those one on one type opportunities which Buendia creates. He’s much better dribbling in from the left or scoring from crosses. That’s in contrast to Ings for example who was a very good one on one finisher- Buendia assisted him quite a few times. This is not to say ings is a better player than Watkins- he’s worse in most departments- but he’s a more effective one on one finisher
  19. I think spurs will start to suffer once key players get injured/ go out of form. Maddison is playing like a man possessed atm which I doubt he will sustain. And one injury to son and they’re left relying solely on richarlison for goals
  20. This is the way I see it. Ignoring mings and Buendia given their long term injuries, the best starting eleven with everyone fit is: Martinez, cash, pau, konsa, Moreno, kamara, Luiz, Ramsay, McGinn, diaby, Watkins), then I’d rank the back ups as follows As good as the first team Carlos, digne Good enough to be relied on for cups Lenglet, tielemans, Kellyman, Duran, zaniolo Need to be sold/replaced Olsen, bailey, traore, chambers, dendoncker The trick then in the cups is to rest as many of the first team without using any of the players needing to be sold/replaced which implies a second team something like the below: Martinez Konsa/cash Carlos. Lenglet. Digne Tielemans kamara/luiz zaniolo. Mcginn/ramsey Kellyman Duran i do think that team should be good enough to beat most second tier cup teams
  21. I detest this argument with a passion and note that it’s identical to the one used by some to justify why city’s takeover 15 years ago wasn’t a big deal (“it will be great because it will break up the top 4”) As Villa fans who support a team with genuine history we should be constantly on the offensive against these types of takeovers which make the league less competitive and, more importantly, make it more difficult for established clubs like ours to win anything
  22. I’m not a fan of his at all but thought he was ok today. He actually looked a lot more confident taking players on and managed to beat his man a few times. He still has a frustrating lack of end product though
  23. He wasn’t terrible tonight to be fair. In fact he made a couple of passes which split the defence open and could easily have led to goals (the through ball to cash who then fired across goal). If those go in then we end up talking about the important contribution he made. He does have a maddening habit of playing flat horizontal balls across the middle of the pitch which are easily intercepted though . He needs to concentrate more in those situations
