Don't you just hate when that happens?

Stolen from carrot-top's post in the maps thread:
  3. Unlikely they'll sting you for import duties if it's only just over £20. I have heaps of stuff sent over from the US and Canada and it usually has to be nearer £50 for them to bother. At £20 it's too much hassle for them as the money they'd make back will be negligible. I think sometimes it's just down to luck though. I just received a package from Canada yesterday and it clearly stated on the export manifest on the envelope that the contents were $200 worth but it didn't get stopped for import duties.
  4. 186 miles each way but to be fair, I only do it once a week (there on a Monday, back on a Friday).
  5. Completely OT but: Channel 4 News
  6. Totally ruined by the quality of the d/l I got hold of. Choppy and sound way out of synch with the pictures for the most part. Downloaded it a few times and managed to get the same crappy version every time. Balls!
  7. Chuffing impossible to get that balance right. I started out doing the hands-on stuff but spend so much time on the strategic and management stuff these days that I wouldn't be able to fix even the simplest of problems. Definitely need to find some time to brush up on my technical skills.
  8. Pretty sure it has been on More4 - definitely worth watching.
  9. Has anyone had any of their shirts professionally framed? If so, any recommendations? I've been quoted some crazy figures to get one done.

I' guessing we don't have any old bill actively posting on the board then?
  11. I wouldn't say it's a "bollocks rumour" as I know I've seen him being a prima donna first-hand and it's clear that Kev Mac also had concerns about his application. Guess it's just good to hear from Kendrick that it might not all be quite as bad as we'd thought. I think ultimately there seems to be a perception that he doesn't put in as much effort as he could, rather than him having a bad attitude.
  12. Live blog on the Birmingham mail site today. Question to Matt Kendrick: Kendrick's answer:

    The Police

Chrisp has just reminded me of another time I tried to help the police. I lived on the 3rd floor of an apartment block in Wales for a while. The place next door was huge and had been the mayors' house previously. One day I watched a bunch of guys emptying the place into a van but didn't think anything of it as the place had been empty for months. Next morning, there's police tape all over the place and apparently heaps of expensive stuff had been robbed. Later that day, when the police came back for a nosey, I wandered down to tell them that I saw the guys clearing out the place (I'd actually had a really good view of the whole thing and could have described in a fair amount of detail, the van and a couple of the guys). The young copper at the tape suggested I didn't bother telling his boss as it'd only mean a whole heap of inconvenience for me and the house was probably insured anyway. It seemed like he wanted to do me a favour by not getting me involved and that was more important that banging up the scrotes doing the rob. All very odd.

Called them twice as far as I can remember. Once as I was driving up the M1 and there was a kid who clearly had downs or something similar, wandering aimlessly along the hard shoulder with no shoes on and a carrier bag. They weren't interested. Another time, I went to the Spar in Cotteridge late one evening and as I was getting back in my car, I saw three young guys breaking windows and nicking stereos out of cars at the garage on the corner of Watford Rd/Northfield Rd. Old Bill said they were very busy but would send a panda round when they could. I waited 25 minutes and the ne'er-do-wells were long gone by that time so I gave up waiting and went home.
  15. My Dad's originally from Swansea, loads of our relatives live there, my Dads cousin's a copper there, he's always got a tale to tell about the Valleys. Neath, Merthyr, Aberdare and Treorchy aren't the nicest of places... theres a reason the valleys have the reputation they do. Still, cheap ass house. I always thought Neath wasn't so bad when passing through it. Then I was taken to the Neath fair. :winkold:
  16. I know that. My gf is just outside Swansea and I can't believe how cheap her house was. Thankfully, it's not quite the valleys so we don't have to put up with what you do Chris but for the price of property down that way, I'm seriously considering jumping ship. Aren't house prices relative to the standard of living? I would say there is a link but it's nothing like close enough to bridge the gap.

Theres a contractor in the office whos from london - couldnt believe the other day that someone was buying a house for "just" £140,000. Mine was less than that but unfortunately bought in November 2007 - the peak of prices of all time GF bought hers about 8 yrs ago for about 60k!!! Now worth about 130k and still three times nicer than what I'm paying 250+ for in London. I really don't know why I'm still here

  19. Tell me about it. I've written a cheque to my solicitor today and am trying to decide if I should put a note in asking him not to cash it for a few weeks. I thought I was all set, done my sums and everything stacked-up but now I've started to look at furniture, I see that I don't actually have enough budget left to buy a bed and a sofa! All the more galling when I see the palace that my sister has in Brum is half the price of the flat I'm buying down here
  20. Totally agree with choffer on that one. A truly poor movie. Only DVD I've ever put in the bin.
  21. Save yourself the bother - it's a truly awful movie. I can't think of a single redeeming feature in this film and you'd think with the amount of killing and shagging that goes on, there should be something good about it. Then again, you could always watch it and make up your own mind
  22. Watched this last night for the first time in years. I'd forgotten what cliche-ridden, laugh-out-loud entertainment it was. The only problem I had with the movie was shaking the thought of a separated at birth: Silent Bob: Rantin' Rob:
  23. Not convinced Fargo would be in my top 5 Coen Bros films tbh.
