  1. Some good thoughts there, I'd go with that.
  2. Been to about 25 matches over the years since 1990 (been busy) and I've never seen us lose. I'm going on Saturday.
  3. I remember when I worked for Evesham all the mainboards were obviously Taiwanese from companies like Microstar, Gigabyte, Asus etc. and the hardware was great but the BIOS's were terrible. It's the major reason it's such a pain to get a non-Windows OS onto a computer and have everything work perfectly - the BIOS should be easy, it should be standards compliant but it was always a bodge to get it to pass Microsoft HCT which was the only goal in the end. Didn't matter if it wasn't ACPI compliant afterwards, as long as it could have a Microsoft sticker on the front. Anyway, I digress. Last I heard about Gingerbread it was supposed to separate out the OS from the UI/modem more, so when there are OS updates in future they can just come down OTA and the carriers / OEMs won't care if they're running Gingerbread, Honeycomb or Icing Sugar at the kernel / Gapps level as long as the modem part, which is what the carriers care about the UI part, which is what the OEMs care about are separate and locked. It's to pander to everyone, will be interesting to see if they just end up pissing everyone off. Finally, in other news I've got Heimdall flashing my Galaxy S. It's an open-source Samsung flash tool that runs on any major platform and tonight I've flashed what's widely rumoured to be the official Froyo (JPM) and then a rooted kernel, all without nasty shitty Windows. Ahem.
  4. Couple of bits: CV, The Desire is a fine phone, the CPU is at least on par with the GalaxyS, the raw 3d throughput is the only major thing the Galaxy has on it. Going by the fact that HTC know how to actually make Android perform well on phones unlike Samsung there's not a lot between them. I sold my Desire and bought a Galaxy S because of the raw hardware potential and the fact/hope CyanogenMod will make it fly. Froyo source was out last night from Samsung but they've pulled it again. Hopefully it finished downloading at work so I can start hacking on it today to see how far I can get an AOSP build going. If Gingerbread SDK is out next week the kernels shouldn't be too far out so hopefully the Froyo drivers won't take much messing to get them to work.
  5. When I first picked one up in the whorephone whorehouse I thought it was a dummy. When the guy said it was real I was shocked, I just wasn't used to anything that light and it felt like a toy. I wouldn't say it felt incredibly cheap, just no reassuring weight. After owning it for about 3 months now I don't feel anything of the sort. It feels solid but light and then when picking up someone's iPhone they feel like a housebrick. It's all about what you get used to and there's no part of the SGS that feels cheap to me now, apart from maybe when you knock it you can feel the vibration motor inside resonate a little. Other than that there is only one front facing physical button that feels fine and the ones on the side feel fine too. The back cover fits very snugly and nothing creaks. I'd say the build quality is maybe slightly better than any Nokia I've owned (lots!) and much better than the SE w910i and my HTC Dream. It probably feels on par with iPhones as everything fits perfectly, no odd gaps and no creaks etc. just don't let the weight fool you into thinking it's not well built.
  6. And is a demonstration of everything that is wrong with firefox. Serious bloat from the browser that started off as being extremely slim lined. Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. Absolutely. Gave it a chance and it was rubbish. I've left it installed in case there's a magical update that makes it blazing. I've run Firefox since it was Phoenix and it was brilliant. Since Chrome came to Linux I've gotten used to the speed and if I use Firefox again now it feels really slow, just how it feels on Android. Of course, it's still about 3 times as quick as IE on the desktop though.
  7. Has anyone got any of the Gameloft HD games? I've downloaded the demos of Sandstorm and HAWX and they're brilliant. Never thought I'd enjoy a FPS on a mobile so much. http://www.gameloft.co.uk/android-games/modern-combat-sandstorm/?adid=110239 Course, the Galaxy S just laps up the frame rates
  8. The MOTD highlights were very spurs-centric and in reality the game was a lot more even than they showed. We also played some really nice stuff that obviously was inconsequential so not worth showing in the highlights. Quite surprised more people haven't put Downing as their MOTM. I thought he was excellent today and has been in almost every game so far this season.
  9. You must have been then. The first goal VDV didn't have to jump to high to get the header behind Dunne who could hardly get off the ground. Still looks injured to me. The 2nd goal it's maybe harsh to say it was Dunne's fault but he did slide in when he didn't especially need to, it would have been better to keep on his feet and made it harder for VDV.
  10. We played some really, really nice football at times today. Very incisive, sharp passing and it was a joy to watch. It's almost there but not quite as we don't know what to do when in front of goal. We probably just need a bit more patience and hold on to the ball more and it will happen.
  11. I can see a massive difference in how we play already. Houllier has really got them playing some nice pass and move. At times we looked comfortably better than them with how comfortable each player was receiving the ball and either playing direct to feet or taking a nice touch, even Dunne and Collins were doing that. Although I think that's probably more McAllister rubbing off so far. I would love for us to have the resources to buy a player like VDV. He was brilliant for them. My MOTM was Downing. I thought he was superb even though he missed almost an open goal from a corner. Friedel - 7 - Solid as usual. Young - 8 - Very solid and committed. Back to the one we know. Collins - 7 - Decent but a few wayward passes Dunne - 5 - At fault for both goals but made a few timely interceptions Albrighton - 6 - Usual dangerous self until run out of steam early in the 2nd half. Double fitness training required. Reo-Coker - 7 - Very good, much more comfortable in possession and nicer touch. Decision making still a bit off. Petrov - 6 - Did a job on VDV for most of the match but not a stand-out player with technique any more now the others have caught up. Young - 7 - Dangerous as always. Everything went through him. He'd be some player if he just stayed on his feet and stopped moaning so much. Downing - 8 - This is the player we wanted from Boro Heskey - 8 - Superb until he went off. The renaissance of Heskey continues. Carew - 4 - Tried but not up to it. I was livid when I saw Cueller wasn't playing. Why? We would have nullified the Crouch threat with someone who can actually jump.
  12. We were wasteful with our chances and they had Richard Dunne.
  13. Is that really true? Utter tripe. Read reviews from people who have actually used the phone: http://stuff.tv/Review/Samsung-Galaxy-S-review/UserReviews/
  14. And yet you posted: So whose fault is it that the thread moved off-topic? Last on the subject from me - Back on topic
  15. Then iPhone owners should stop talking about Samsung! Well maybe if Android owners could possibly control their urges and stop posting in the Iphone thread we Iphone users could possbily do that. I dont think you see anywhere near the amount of Iphone users posting in the Android thread. Maybe we just dont give a flying f*&k about Android. Oh dear. You've got a profile that claims you're not a 'fanboi' and you have a definition of a 'fanboi' in your signature however with posts like this you really do sound like one. So because I own an Android-based phone I'm not allowed to post in the iPhone thread even when I'm answering questions other people have asked? WTF? Your rant just makes you seem very immature and unable to participate in reasonable discussion. This is a thread about the Apple iPhone, it's not some war between 2 camps as you make it out to be. Who's the 'we' you refer to who don't care about Android? Because I certainly don't class myself in some kind of phone operating system group, that would be pretty sad. I try and talk about what's in the thread, no more, no less.
  16. Rebooted the phone? Rebooted the PC? Try changing the USB options in About phone and then enabling USB debugging in Applications > Development.
  17. Then iPhone owners should stop talking about Samsung!
  18. There's no official word as yet apart from Samsung UK have said 'September'. You can put a firmware on there from Samsung through unofficial routes that is perfectly usable if you're so inclined.
  19. Samsung have pulled it out of the bag it seems. There's not a lot of info around at the moment. As an aside, if a Galaxy S is crashing it may have a really old firmware on it. It should be plugged into Kies to check for an update. And back to the topic. If you look around at the current crop of modern phones and still decide an iPhone is for you then please for the love of god don't get a 3GS. Most contracts are 2 years now and if you're starting out with an older phone then you'll be really out of date by the time contract renewal is up. At least the iPhone 4 is still pretty new.
  20. Looks like the official Froyo for the Galaxy S has been leaked even though nothing's been announced and Samsung may not push this as final http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790686
  21. Makes me wonder if Houllier sees Bannan as his next version of Gerrard to bring through.
  22. Doing some work from home and have been in London for a few days so not fair to leave the kids with the wife. I fully plan on encouraging the wife and kids to come to more games this season. Overall I'll be going to more than usual.
