  1. Oh I forgot it does TV-out from the 3.5mm jack and it will play almost any format media file whereas most other devices will only play certain types of H.264 MP4. The only criticism is that it looks like an iPhone hardware and launcher-wise. Although most people (myself included) just install LauncherPro and be done with it. I'll make a vid tonight of mine.
  2. Of course I'm not going to be completely impartial because I own a Samsung Galaxy S but I've had an Android phone for 2 years now and I follow the platform quite closely including what phones are around. On my T-Mobile upgrade they didn't carry the Galaxy S at the time so I had the Desire as a free upgrade but never got it out of the box, kept it sealed and then ebayed it. I had to pay around £80 extra to get the SGS but I wanted the best phone out there no compromises. Everyone at work has the Desires and for ages I wanted one. They are very nice devices and HTC have done a great job. However, hardware-wise they just don't have anything on the SGS. See this pic: http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/17/2010/06/smartphone_stats_v2.0.jpg (for Desire, see Nexus One) The features the Samsung has over the Desire are: * 1GHz ARM A8 Cortex CPU (same as the iPad) * PowerVR SGX540 (3 times as fast the iPhone 4 / iPad / Desire, almost twice as fast as a Nintendo Wii) * Faster memory * Six-Axis movement sensor * 720p HD video recording * 8/16GB onboard SD + external SD * 4 inch Super-AMOLED screen * Lighter * Longer battery life * Front-facing camera Ref the battery question - If you go on holiday you need your charger. My phone lasts just about 2 days but smartphones these days are very much plug in overnight, use during the day. Features such as GPS, Bluetooth, 3G, WiFi all use power and there has to be a tradeoff somewhere. These devices are more powerful than lots of laptops from 2 years ago yet can't weigh anywhere near them.
  3. crap mate. Mainly due to this bug . I can tap stuff out but if I make a mistake it's all over. I haven't experimented with exporting TERM to anything else yet and you could maybe sort out a key combination in Swype for CTRL-H. I'll have a mess and report back.
  4. I've got one. The only bad thing about it is it looks like an iPhone 3GS. Once you turn the screen on it's pretty obvious though.
  5. Most popular iPhone 4 vid on Youtube and very apt
  6. So good you've said it twice I've just upgrade my firmware to JG5 - it's an unofficial Samsung build. The initial one I had (JF3) had a bug with the IO so it would lag terribly. Now it's much better and flies like it should. As soon as Froyo is released for this (late August) it will be amazing. I've put LauncherPro on it too, much nicer than the Samsung launcher.
  7. The version pre installed on my galaxy is incredible and I can see what everyone was talking about now.perhaps swype have done a deal with samsung to downgrade the old version?
  8. At his best Downing is devastating. I can't wait to see the best from him this season.
  9. I don't think you did. And I don't think anyone reading it thought you did either. It just came down to "Well I just think it's better." even though it seems to be universally accepted that the ability to get a refund on the Android Marketplace is the one major difference and a great feature for consumers. And I find it pretty unacceptable that the Apple app store makes no provision for refunds. What happens if you pay for something that turns out to be crap? Tough luck? I accept I may have posted slightly for effect although I didn't say anything that wasn't true so I apologise for that. The iPhone 4, aside from its well-documented issues is a great package but it's getting behind the times a bit software-wise and the hardware is let down by the OS. I admit I have a big beef with Apple due to them excluding me from using their products. Even though it wouldn't be a massive task to make a Linux version of iTunes (due to Mac OS being Unix) they won't do it. They won't even help the wine community to get it running on wine which shouldn't be difficult at all. Instead they write a completely different version for Windows so they can rope in Windows users but don't even make any mention of Linux anywhere because they consider that a threat to Mac as the position of default alternative to Windows. This wouldn't be a problem if you didn't have to use iTunes to use an iPod / Phone but you do - for no reason other than vendor lock-in they force you to use iTunes to activate the devices. I don't use Windows and I won't pay ridiculous prices for a Mac so how can I use their products? So I have to admit I can't wait to see Apple fail. They're a nasty, selfish company who need bringing down a peg or two. But as a package, the iPhone 4 is quite nice, just not for me and slightly behind the times.
  10. To get this incredible galaxy s I'm currently swyping on
  11. My unlocked sealed Desire went for £330 on eBay. Seems to be about right for them.
  12. Have you recently changed from googlemail to gmail or vice versa? If you have the phone set to one and then change your address to the other it does this. http://www.google.fm/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=2a4a5f5cb12ea3b2&hl=en
  13. The Pro isn't coming to Europe anyway so it'll just be the Galaxy S for me. http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2010/06/25/samsung-galaxy-s-review/
  14. TBF, the Wii is basically a souped up Gamecube and the Gamecube was hardly cutting edge when it was released in 2001. The Wii runs mainly on decade old hardware. Yes I know, but the Wii can still do stunning graphics in games like SMG2, and for a mobile device to be able to beat its raw 3d performance is incredible. The iPhone4 / iPad both do 22m triangles / sec.
  15. Oh by the way, if anyone wants a brand new, unlocked, factory sealed Desire for £329 then I've got one going
  16. Guy at work bought a Galaxy S and brought it in today. OMG the screen is gorgeous. It's really responsive too. Only problem is it looks like an iPhone and the menus are made to look more Apple-ish. They're rooted already though so the first thing I'll do is load a custom ROM, hopefully Cyanogen will test against it. 90m triangles / second on the PowerVR graphics chip compared to 60m triangles / second on a Nintendo Wii...
  17. Absolutely this. I think you just need a power widget on your home screen (or something like Locale) and turn off stuff you're not using. Smartphones now have an amazing amount of stuff inside, but they're still confined by the laws of physics. If you want longer life you will need to use less power or have a bigger battery. To use less power you don't have the GPS, Wi-Fi, bright screen, Bluetooth etc. running any more than they have to. I've heard many Android devs say task killers do nothing. I think they're a bit of a placebo really.
  18. So any phone which does not have the absolute top spec available is obsolete...... Better get onto phones4u and carphone warehouse and tell them they better have a sale on all those obsolete handset they have. But Apple keep coming out with stuff like: It claims to be the best phone, when in almost every way it's not. Various cheaper phones don't claim to be the best of anything, they do what they're supposed to for what they're supposed to cost. I guess I'm just completely underwhelmed by it TBH. I expected something groundbreaking and they've just made something else that sells by marketing alone and isn't out of this world at doing anything.
  19. Unfortunately the iPhone 4 was already obsolete before it was released. The Samsung Galaxy S has a better screen (super-AMOLED), same CPU, faster memory and massively better graphics performance. It also has a much better OS in Android 2.1 / 2.2 and no walled-garden vendor lock-in of Apple. http://lifehacker.com/5575317/smartphone-comparison-chart-dishes-the-dirt-on-smartphone-specs Seems like a massive fall from grace for the iPhone.
  20. I'll probably go for a Samsung Galaxy S Pro next. Super AMOLED display and no OTT measures to lock the bootloader. http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s-pro-specs-begin-emerge
  21. I do think more education needs to be given to people about what exactly smoking is likely to do to their baby. I don't think people realise just what effect it has.
  22. Awesome! Can't wait to see how they did it. Be forewarned though - you'll only be able to put Froyo on it when someone makes a ROM for it. Rooting a device and getting a later ROM to work are very different things. Getting Eclair to work on the G1 took ages because the camera drivers were Donut only. HTC didn't release the drivers so someone had to spend months reverse engineering them. The same thing is going to happen with Froyo, there are ROMs out there but loads of stuff doesn't work. Unless you're a low-level Android developer yourself you're at the mercy of the ROMs available and how much stuff on them actually works. When you put Froyo on your phone won't really be up to you unless you want to give up stuff like the camera, bluetooth, wifi etc.
  23. Perfect example of the Apple RDF I think. It reminds me of mass religion. When asked for, or presented with facts it just ends up with "This is my opinion, you have yours." to just kill the until then perfectly reasonable discussion.
  24. I was shocked to find out you couldn't get refunds from the App store. No wonder the devs love it.
