To be fair it might have to do with what year. That 2006 US team, despite its ranking, was pretty poor.

Tottenham have signed vertonghen, Lloris, paulinho and Eriksen in the last couple years. Vertonghen signed for them ahead of arsenal. Without champions league. They're all pretty much top class players. (You can argue paulinho, but he starts for Brazil) and they're not near the size of Man U.

Con, mangala said he'd prefer Man U to man city. Champions league isn't everything. It's very helpful, but for a club of Uniteds size, they're still very attractive to players.

Just because the fans wanted bent doesn't mean a manager shouldn't have been able to realize that a player as limited as bent isn't worth £18-24m and those wages.
