New Orleans and Houston

Early planning stages yet but hoping to get over the New Orleans next April for Wrestlemania.  I saw that Houston is close by (on an American scale anyway) and with me going all that way, it would be good for me to take in somewhere else.

Any thoughts/verdicts on these two cities?

Thanks in advance.

I was due to fly from New Orleans to Dallas but Dallas got shut down so I was routed via Houston  .. seem to recall it was about a 60 min flight

as for New Orleans ...

you have Bourbon Street of course which is pretty much party central  ... I'd aim to stay in the French quarter that way you don't have so far to stagger home in the morning

New Orleans Saints was a highlight for me , I'm not a huge American Football fan  .. but as sporting events go it's pretty good fun ... Alligator burgers and beer delivered to you seat

We did a Mississippi steam boat trip that takes you to an old civil war sight  ... interesting enough but more for ticking the "sailed on the Mississippi " box

The cemeteries are interesting  , James Bond and Double Jeopardy , ( interview with a vampire  as well ? )   if you like your films  .... I think some companies offer tours  , we just rocked up and had a wander about

French Quarter is worth a walking tour  however

there is a casino in town as well if you like a bit of casino fun .. ( casino was home to an eat all you can buffet that had a queue going out the casino and around the block !!! )

Depending on what you entry / exit strategy is then South Western fly NO to Vegas dirt cheap   .. We entered NO via train from Memphis only one train a day and it's quite a long journey but it's full of party going Americans and so the buffet car is great fun ( but also runs out of beer so bring your own :) )

bit rushed as I'm on my way to Luton shortly :) , but if you want more info just shout

Thinking of maybe trading Texas for Florida.  I've read it's about 10 hours drive from Orlando to New Orleans which could be fun.  Will be cheaper to fly into Florida too.

Also, always wanted to do the whole Florida theme park thing seeing as my nasty parents never took me.

Florida then crystal river and snorkelling with manatees is your friend

We scrubbed Florida in the end as the drive to NO looked a bit boring tbh ....( We were in Atlanta and Florida was a bit out the way all in all but the drive was one of the reasons )

Don't think you can fly direct to Orlando from NO but you can get to Miami for about £80

If he's going WrestleMania time unfortunately it will be off-season for the Saints. The newly named New Orleans Pelicans NBA team will be in season though if sporting events are your thing.

If you're flying in to Orlando and thinking about going to theme parks, do it, you won't regret it. Makes you feel like a big kid. :D

Houston is a total wasteland, I'd skip it altogether. Go to Austin instead if you want to visit Texas.

NAIL. HEAD. Etc

I lived in Texas for a while. I lived in Austin and it remains my favourite place on earth. Make sure you visit there. 6th Street is the best night out and there's loads of good live music and quirky stuff around, especially on South Congress. You can also go to Barton Springs to cool off (natural cold springs with Texan beach babes everywhere!). You can also see the bats which is cool. And get yourself some trailer food, best trailer food in the States!

Don't bother going to Houston. COMPLETE sh*thole

If you wanted to head to west Texas, i would shout San Antonio as a pretty nice place to visit. The river walk is nice, you get to see The Alamo, there are some decent places to eat, including a Fogo do Chao, and your theme park fix can be filled with Six Flags and Seaworld.

Southwest have plenty of flights to SA.

San Antonio isn't really West Texas... at least not compared to Midland, Odessa, and (most touristy, being about the only city that's not an oil town) El Paso. Marfa is also worth a visit, I've heard, as is Big Bend National Park.

That said, it's probably too far from Nawlins to make it combinable.

It's like a whole other country.
