I'm more optimistic than many about how bottom-up organization can vanquish corporatist (which is to say socialist) organization.

Greater autonomy (and the kind of empowerment that comes about by a really true co-operative movement, for instance) is surely, by necessity, a good way to go to combat corporatism, statism and autocracy.

I'm not sure about your definition of 'socialist'. I'm not even sure how it fits in to your libertarian, free market diatribe.

socialism (as in state control of the means of production) inevitably leads to corporatism (whether there are many corporate entities running things or one corporate entity doesn't change the fact that it's corporatist).

I think that's a very narrow definition of socialist.

I don't doubt that it's the common definition (or even that it is the most applicable), just that there are some economists who would argue for a different definition, or at least, for a different kind of socialism.

Possibly, it's also a rather bogus representation of the way of things. That isn't a go at you, Levi, as you'd know.

Am I right in thinking that the results won't be decalred till Friday?

Polls close at 10.

We should know by and large by the small hours of friday morning.

The first seats to declare are usually in Thursday (Sunderland?); the polls close at 10; and last time the first was declared at 10.45! The quickest was 10.43. But nothing will be clear until late Thursday. Usually one seat will give a good idea of who if anyone will win; it used to be somewhere in Essex, but I am not sure which one it will this year.

I am quite excited by the spectacle this year, so I think I will stay up...

No I know when they close, I’d just heard that there would be no counting and therefore no declaration till Friday.

I hope that’s wrong, as I like watching results night. It’s a bit like watching the longest FA Cup draw you’ll ever see.

polls close at 10. In theory any constituency can declare after that time, assuming they have counted all their votes.

As friday is only 2 hours away, you won't know the outcome of the election for sure until the small hours of friday, although some exit polls may give some clues at to what may happen.

I find myself agreeing with a labour MP for possibly the first time ever :-)

Labour candidate Manish Sood has claimed Gordon Brown is the "worst prime minister" Britain has ever had

nice timing

Link/source tone please?

0938: A Labour candidate has said Gordon Brown is the "worst prime minister Britain has ever had", a newspaper reports. In an interview with the Lynn News, the candidate for North West Norfolk, Manish Sood, also says he believes immigration is making the country "bigger and messier". It is reported that he believes the death penalty should be brought back and that the Queen should have more powers.

0956: Labour candidate Manish Sood continues his attack on Gordon Brown. The prime minister's recent policies are a "disaster", including the rise in income tax, he tells Sky News. True Labour values have "gone missing", he adds, arguing that the party needs to be cleaned up.

North west Norfolk in the last election was a Tory seat that increased its majority. The chances of a Labour or Lib Dem winning there are somewhat slim.

Lib dems defect to Labour

Half the members of Plymouth's Liberal Democrat Executive have defected to Labour only a few days before the General Election.

Local Lib Dem members Jan Mortier, Tom Sale, Max Harding and Dominic House were all members of the Plymouth Lib Dem executive committee. They were the elected vice-chair, membership, data and youth officers. They are switching sides ahead of the General Election as they want to join a 'campaigning party' that is working for social justice.

Jan, Tom, Max and Dominic's short experience of the Lib Dems has not put them off getting involved in politics but they are disillusioned with Nick Clegg's party in Plymouth.

1019: Labour candidate Manish Sood stands by his criticisms of Gordon Brown and claims he should be the party leader instead. Staff at Labour HQ are not amused, says the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg.

Bonkers!

Good word for him Paul - me thinks the only people who will try and put some sort of credibility out of this guys words are desperate Tory people.

He's getting his 5 minutes of fame - maybe he saw the money that the Rochdale woman got and thought he could get a few quid from the Mail? :-)

1013

Labour candidate and Gordon Brown critic Manish Sood says he has been in disagreement with his constituency party in North West Norfolk for three years and that it has not given him its proper backing, which is "disgraceful".

- from the BBC ticker - sort of explain a bit.

Nice comments those

well, i'd guess capital punishment and greater powers for the Queen are more in line with conservative/right wing ideals than labour or left wing ideals, so i can see why you would think that trickie. :winkold:
