Tackle in the box, possibly a penalty.

The ref gave a free kick outside the box instead and sent Bogarde off.

Looking very tough now to get anything out of this - which is a shame, we've been the better side.

1-3 Norwich - long ball over the top, communication mix up between Swinkels and Emery - Swinkels heads it back to Emery who isn't there as he's come well out of his box to sweep up and the Norwich striker nudegs it home.

Game over I think and the playoffs gone.

They'll be gutted in this one - they really should have put it to bed.

Ref has spotted something from a corner = penalty to Norwich.

Saved by Emery but he got the follow up - hat trick for the Norwich striker.

4-1 down in a game we really should have won.

We looked like a real team a couple of months ago. But despite the core of the team remaining the same we seem to have regressed back to being somewhat disjointed all over and very porous at the back. The talent is there ,but its not gelling when they play together. Some terrible defending this evening and some wasteful play in attacking positions.  Maybe we are missing OReilly and Kellyman as the conduit between midfield and attack

I know it sounds odd, but I thought we just about edged the first half with the scores at 1-1 - we had a couple of really good chances to take a lead.

Then we came out in the second half and took control of the game - started to dominate, created a load of good chances that we didn't take...and conceded three goals and had a man sent off.

Weird game and one they're not going to forget in a hurry - they'll be absolutely gutted to have lost this.

I thought t was quite an untidy performance from us for a lot of the game, we weren't playing our usual passing game, as in the players not linking up as well with each other as they usually do, too many telegraphed passes that could have been decisive, final ball was often flat, all three goals were poor to give away, although maybe Swinkels one was just one of those unfortunate things, can happen to anyone, referee didn't help either as seemed one of those that thinks every time a player falls over it's a foul, so game didn't have much flow to it, and it was them taking more advantage of that than us, all that said we also had enough chances to win the game, and probably should have had it won before we went down to men

I don't think playing Wilson as a second striker is helping our performances, he's not able to drop deep and help the midfled in terms of linking up with them and help us keep the ball better in those areas like Jimoh-Aloba, or Kellyman do when they have that role, as they're more specialist tens/attacking midfielders, with Wilson as the number ten it becomes more like a traditional 442, I presume he's being played there to try and develop his game further than being more than just a goal scorer

Frustrating loss in the end. Played well for twenty second half minutes after an even first half but then shot ourselves in the foot several times. The Norwich penalty was very soft also.

Anyway... some positives: Wilson will have a good career as long as he fills out a bit. He has an instinct in and around the box that no one else does and he found space on a number of occasions. Kadan Young (Motm) has one main trick which is to go on the ouside with his pace but Norwich still couldn't stop him because of his acceleration and balance. It was a bit like Aaron Lennon when he was in his pomp.

Kadan is going to have to develop his game i think to stand a chance. As you say its one trick. Jimoh was poor tonight but he has everything in his locker.  The 2 i rate the highest though are Rowe and Borland. Rowe has everything to be a fullback.  Borland will only fail if he doesnt get any bigger. He is so so tidy with the ball . Makes it look easy but in reality its so hard to pick the right pass nearly every single time at 16 years old . He does. He is a tough cookie that i think would be doing even better if we had a big midfielder next to him. Alcock is technically good but playing 2 x 5'7 midfielders just isnt sustainable..

Young is a box of tricks type winger similar to Philogene, I think he has a lot more to his game as a winger than just going past players with his pace, but when he's playing on the right hand side that's his main asset, and since he came from injury I've noticed his crossing has improved a lot, so I think he's going on he outside a lot to take advantage of that, when he's on the left he cuts inside and his play is more about linking up with others around him, I actually think he's improved a lot since his injury, previously he was obviously very talented, but seemed like he was waiting for the game to come to him rather than taking control of it himself, but now gets a lot more involved, I actually wouldn't be surprised to see him back on the first team bench before the end of the season

Jimoh-Aloba has some very good games, and even in games where he's not as good he has some moments of technical brilliance, kind of how Kadan Young was last season, which I think is normal for a player his age, Kellyman was similar last season as well

Good to see Broggio back as well, another top young attacking prospect, actually came into the U21s before Borland and Jimoh as a first year scholar, but has been injured since Decemeber

Is Bogarde not progressing as much as hoped?

Not at all. And his older brother has just been released from his Dutch club as well  . The same with Chrisene. Both wonderkids at 15 . And now he struggles to get into the Blackburn team at 21 years old.

He's (perhaps also a bit like Chrisene) not quite got a position that's his - he's a reasonable defensive midfielder but with perhaps not enough of a burst to  make it his own and he's an okay centre back but lacking the size and presence to be an exceptional one - there's a very good footballer in there, it's just hard to see exactly how someone will get it out of him.

Maybe that's why Kadan has been playing on the right recently, to learn how to play on that side and develop his game. As @useless says, he has plenty of tricks which we have seen deployed when he's played on the left. His recent performances have been encouraging and much more like the player we saw 18 months ago. Hopefully his decision making in the final third will improve and pick people out more often like he did for Wilson's goal.

Chrisene and Bogarde both only turned twenty earlier this year, also they've both missed a year or more through injuries, so haven't had as much development time as some other players their age

Chrisene did well to get a Championship loan in the first place, again considering his injuries, maybe hasn't had as much game time as he would have liked, but some of that might be down to Blackburn's situation so less likely to risk playing a yougnster in defence, similar for Sousa at Plymouh

Not sure why Bogarde isn't out on loan, he's more than good enough, he's a clear standout for our U21s when he plays, but he should be because he's way to good for that level now, so when he does well it's not noteworty, just a case of keeping him match fit, I'm guessing maybe he got caught between two situations, loan interest from the Championship, but also Emery reluctant to let him go just in case he's needed, Bogarde has quoted Emery has telling him he has to wait but his chance will come. He might not be a part of our squad in the short-term, but bigger picture wise I think he's on the right track career wise, and should get a decent loan, or buyback move in the summer

Norwich defeat, stats and all other results updated.  It all boils down to this now. Southampton or Villa for the last playoff spot.

To be decided today !!

Southampton play at midday today. If they can avoid defeat at home to 15th placed Manchester United then they'll be in and we'll be out*.

If United can beat them, and United are very patchy away from home it must be said, then it's all down to us at 7pm this evening away to Newcastle where only a win will do.

  LEAGUE TABLE (as of 28/04/2024) P W D L F A GD Pts
16 Southampton 19 7 3 9 40 41 -1 24
17 Norwich City 20 7 2 11 43 42 +1 23
18 Stoke City 20 7 2 11 38 55 -17 23
19 Aston Villa 19 6 4 9 39 48 -9 22

Only noteworthy selection point against Norwich was the return of Mikell Barnes to the team for the first time since September. He was in the squad once in March but never came on.

* barring a draw and an >= 8 goal victory for Villa
