They want to speed up those repairs on the Kerch bridge before Ukraine come for Crimea

Penny for Putlers thoughts right now

September 2023 was their estimate last week. They found they needed more spans than they though and both carriageways were fubarred not one. And that was the Russians saying it.

Realistically it’d be extremely difficult for the Ukrainians to attack over the river though, even against a Russian force in disarray.

It must be done,  by drones,  artillery and aircraft.

It would be criminal to  let to let the Russian Army roam around Ukraine doing whatever they like to whoever.  We know what they do to innocent people,  don't give them the chance.

They are an invading force that must be run to the border unfortunately.

Also, they get home and they help with the Russian economy long term,  we don't want that either.

They just don't have the vehicles needed to span it,  a Lada won't do it I suppose.

I assume Ukraine could build/repair a bridge then protect it with masses of air defence systems whilst they pass men and machines over it.

Meanwhile their longer range artillery can ensure the bridge isn't shelled by Russian artillery?

The last remaining partially operational bridge - Antonovskij -  out of Kherson collapsed a few hours ago under extreme artillery fire from Ukraine.

This isn't Dumbkirk, it's 10.000 Russians floating down shit creek.

The casualties from this 'withdrawal' will be catastrophic for Russia. This is the few remaining professional soldiers of the 'second army' of the world being herded against a 2km spanning river under complete fire control by an extremely proficient artillery army.

Why would Ukraine want to keep that bridge at all? Why wouldn’t they completely destroy it?

This is a difficult one.
If it were taken down by professionals during peacetime it would not be a problem.
If it was blown up during wartime it could create problems for shipping.  Ukraine has occupied ports to the north of the bridge. Keeping the waterway open benefits Ukraine.
We also need to factor in that relationships between Ukraine and Russia will eventually improve.  The bridge is an asset to both.
Keeping the bridge closed to heavy traffic makes sense in the short term.  But in the long term it’s better to keep the majority intact.

I think Ukraine are of the opinion that the Bridge needs to come down regardless of the state of antipathy between the two countries as it was built in rather a hurry for such a project and wasn't build to an acceptable standard

They don’t need to attack over the massive river to drive the Russians out, Ukraine holds territory to the north which is on the eastern bank. They can just attack south from that instead.
