  1. I think we've seen enough slow starts in ECL games this season to think that maybe it's a tactic to try and keep things tight and controlled and also conserve energy for a squad of limited resources. I'm hopeful that we will see a full force Villa tomorrow.
  2. Another great advert for De Zerbissimo tonight. Far too open at the back by all accounts and paying the price for constantly rotating their keeper every other game.
  3. In recent games we've started well, dominated the first half but then let our opponents back into the game. Whereas, Spurs have often been been slow to get going but finished strongly. This may be a tactical plan by The Ange Man to keep the ball and tire their opponent out, or they may be finding it hard to play well for 90 mins. They've conceded first in 5 of their last 6 games so more the latter I think. It will be a battle of two high lines so we have to keep Maddison quiet and hope Tielemans can thread some balls through for Watkins, Bailey etc. Romero has a pretty good range of passing so it could be Pau vs Cristian spraying the big diagonals, also. I'm going for an entertaining 2-2. Also hoping to see Romero's confusion and anger when Konsa starts instead of Cash at right back!
  4. They entertain but they also concede a lot of goals. Very inconsistent but fun to watch. Don't think that would work out well at Anfield or the Nou Camp.
  5. Sassuolo - took a team from lower mid table to upper mid table. Shakhtar - Won the Ukrainian league with a team that regularly finishes first or second. Pep and football journalists talk him up a lot but I don't think there's enough of a track record for him to be linked with the top jobs in Europe yet.
  6. Why is De Zerbi getting constantly linked with Barcelona, Liverpool etc when his biggest achievement is a sixth place finish with Brighton? His teams are very inconsistent (not won two in a row since September) and defensively shaky. Brighton are entertaining at times, but I think he's been massively overhyped in the media.
  7. Glad I called it right in the pre-match thread. Could have done with it being less nervy though!
  8. Should have been four up at half time. Michael Oliver did his best to benefit the big six - I don't think I've seen a more biased performance for years. To come back like that means more than conceding two cheap goals. Top teams score late winners.
  9. Man Utd's build up play is so bad. If they manage to create anything it feels like a fluke rather than something they've trained to do. I'm still perplexed that we lost to them twice this season.
  10. They scored four against Brighton and Newcastle, were unlucky not to draw with Man Utd and have been competitive against all of the big teams at home this season. Think this will be close and high scoring. They played within themselves at VP but think they will press us a lot more this time. Also, Doughty is very good at delivering from set pieces and we are awful at defending them. Villa to win 3-2 is my prediction.
  11. I'd not appreciated that we're five points better off than Newcastle were after the same number of games last season (and same points as Man Utd had in 3rd after 26 played). Impressive! Just need to keep as close to 2 ppg as we can until the end of the season.
  12. Thought they were pathetic against Arsenal last night. I can see them dropping further down the league, even when some more players return from injury. Their midfield looks feeble without the energy and physicality of Joelinton and the defense is shaky now that there's no effective shield in front. Increasingly it's looking like their season hinges on the FA Cup. Would the current regime lose patience with Howe if they win nothing and finish bottom half?
  13. Great performance from him today. Much more aggressive in his pressing and defensive work. And made a lot happen going forward too. If he can keep his all round game at this level and start finding the net again more often then he's been a great signing. That shot that hit the post was Bertie-esque!
  14. Does lots of lovely stuff but also very careless on the ball and a better team than Fulham might have punished some of his giveaways. Frustrating to watch in a similar way to Buendia, but with a more languid approach to recovery when he loses the ball. If he were more consistent and more athletic we probably wouldn't have been in the market for him though.
  15. Peter Drury on Peacock was going on and on about how brave and courageous Chelsea were like they were a plucky underdog like Luton or something and not a team that has spent a billion pounds on players in the last two years...
  16. Keep picking Dan Burn, Eddie! Don't listen to anybody!
  17. Is there something about wearing number 10 for Tottenham that makes you become the most divingest player in the league? The amount of time that Maddison spends rolling on the floor would make Kane blush.
  18. Godfrey's a dirty player. Pretty sure the kick to the head on Ederson was intentiona there. Doesn't he have previous with nasty challenges (got away with stamping on an Arsenal player, I recall)?
  19. I see that Howe finally admitted that the number and severity of injuries they've had is self-inflicted: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/feb/09/eddie-howe-admits-to-mistakes-made-at-newcastle-over-fitness-and-injuries
  20. Reasons to be optimistic: Man Utd's away form against the top 10 is very poor: 4 points from a possible 18. They got a last minute winner against Wolves and a 0-0 draw against Liverpool where they sat in their own half all game. They still have a negative goal difference. Record against top 8 this season: W3 D2 L5 Lisandro Martinez is injured again (their upturn in form coincided with his return).
  21. If Emery got Villareal to a Champions league semi final, beating Juventus and Bayern in the process, then why couldn't he do similar with us?
  22. The only similarity between Chelsea and Arsenal's rebuilds is getting rid of high earners. Since Arteta came in the transfer policy at Arsenal has been a good mix of youth and experience. And it's hard to argue that they paid over the odds for any of the young players they've signed (except maybe Fabio Vieira). Chelsea on the other hand have blown a ridiculous amount on young players with high ceilings but with no sense of how to fit them all together. And there are very few experienced players left to guide them or foster a winning mentality.
  23. Compared to some other teams (Tottenham, Newcastle, Chelsea, Brighton etc.) our injury list hasn't been too bad overall this season. But losing Konsa and Pau at the same time, when Mings is already out for the season, is pretty detrimental it has to be said.
  24. They scored 3 goals from an xg of less than 1. One goal was a massive deflection and another was due to a clanger by Kalvin Phillips. West Ham were terrible and still could have got something out of the game. Also Martinez looks to have gotten another knee injury and he's pretty pivotal to how they play.
  25. Howe is too loyal to his favourites. Dan Burn looked like a tortoise against Ogbene and Livramento was a much better match when he came on. I was surprised how little control Newcastle had in the game also.
