  1. But the attacking team is forced to waste the quick free kick by kicking the ball at the defending player. Players should get yellow carded if they don't move away quickly regardless. It's just another annoying bit of gamesmanship that could easily be eradicated.
  2. Do the new rules include yellow cards for standing in front of a free kick to stop it being taken quickly? Cos that's more annoying to me than kicking the ball away.
  3. I guarantee you in the first few weeks of the season Pep will be complaining after a match that they should have had 11 minutes added on rather than 8.
  4. A nervous wreck in goal. A terrible defence. A serial loser and a child in midfield. 4 tiny wingers up front. What could possibly go wrong?
  5. Nah, it's Steve Coogan from the Bureau de Change sketch on The Day Today.
  6. There was an article on The Athletic the other day about why ambitious clubs should be targeting Tyler Adams - seemed very much like they'd been paid to write it by his representatives! I'm pretty sure Fabrizio's info came from that same piece tbh. Not sure how much truth there are in any of these reports.
  7. If you cross your eyes like you're looking at a magic eye picture then it's not so blurry. Seriously though this quality is terrible.
  8. He needs to develop further by playing regular top-flight football and it's not likely to happen at Villa this season. If he does well enough at Burnley that we want to exercise the buy-back clause then surely that makes it a worthwhile deal to make? I don't believe this is book-balancing for FFP and I trust Emery's judgement if he doesn't think Aaron's ready to be a first team player here yet.
  9. They're finally paying the price for an over-reliance on Jorge Mendes. I'd not appreciated until now the full extent of how many players have come via him directly or indirectly: Over two thirds of their signings since Fosun took over are either Gestifute clients or Mendes helped facilitate the deals. The quality of those offerings from Jorge have lessened over the years (Fabio Silva, Matheus Nunes and Guedes look particularly poor investments) and now that there's a new cash cow in the form of the Saudi Pro League I don't think Wolves will be getting preferred treatment from Mendes/Gestifute. Also, the fact that the owners of Wolves are saying there's no money to spend until next season must mean that their 22-23 accounts will show a big loss (60 million plus I would guess). They wouldn't be so afraid of FFP otherwise. Either that or they're looking to sell despite what they're saying publicly.
  10. He seemed to get worse as the transfers got more expensive. The amount Leeds have wasted on players like Aaronson, Rutter, Dan James, Llorente etc. is criminal. The fact that Orta managed to get the Sevilla job after all that is mind boggling.
  11. Not just him who has that clause. Very poor strategy by previous owners/sporting director.
  12. Leeds apparently put specific clauses in a lot of players' contracts that they could leave on loan if the team were relegated. OK in principle to lessen the wage bill, but not so great when players you hoped would stay (like Wober) decide the Championship is not for them. Gnonto and Harrison are two players without the loan clause it seems.
  13. At least one of the following should be a requisite for reporting on Villa: - Inside knowledge/connections to the club that provide insight that supporters wouldn't otherwise get. - Technical & tactical acumen that can give supporters a deeper understanding of how their team plays. - An emotional attachment to the club that allows them to write with genuine passion and create a connection with the fanbase. I'm not sure Gregg has/had any of these things.
  14. He was inside his own half when the ball was played.
  15. Despite the hype surrounding their data-driven model, Brentford are just the new Stoke for me. Very physical (Ben Mee, what a prick), effective from set pieces and on the counter. I thought we had them chasing shadows with our play in the first half. Really exciting to see how our in-possession game is evolving. I was encouraged by how many attacking options there were for us in every move. I definitely think we'll be exciting to watch this season. Just need to find the right balance with defense. That will come though. Exciting times!
  16. Ollie scored a similar amount of goals to Callum Wilson, but he played about 1300 more minutes of football, so his stats per 90 are quite a bit lower. I'm not saying I would want to swap Watkins for Wilson - Ollie does a lot of valuable work outside of goal-scoring & Wilson probably couldn't be relied on to start every game - but there are definitely a number of strikers out there who finish more efficiently and confidently than Watkins. The issue is whether they could do the defensive and hold-up play as effectively as he does.
  17. Take a break, lino! You're in Florida for God's sake.
  18. Dibley-Dias & McCoy-Splatt - some fantastic surnames out there tonight.
  19. Fulham playing a dangerously high line there. You don't want to be doing that!
  20. 'There's no VAR' - more effective at reviving players than a magic sponge.
  21. Kamara's ball to Archer when he won the penalty was a beauty! And Torres and Diego Carlos both have good passing ranges which means that with the likes of Luiz and Buendia too we have a bunch of players who could unlock a tight defence.
  22. We're being spared Steven Warnock's expert analysis, so overall I'd rather have silence.
  23. How on earth did Fulham finish tenth last season? They look like a bunch of Championship cloggers without Mitrovic and Palhinha in the team. Also, Marco Silva looks like he wishes he'd taken that Saudi money!
  24. Watching the Brentford Brighton game from earlier while I wait and Brentford are not treating it like a friendly. I hope our players' ankles survive the match on Sunday...
  25. Regardless of whether he trusts his body or not, I think Bailey can run with the ball when there's space to run into, but struggles to dribble in tight spaces. From what I've seen of Diaby he looks much better at carrying the ball at pace no matter where he is on the pitch.
