From what I can see, we get the ball, pass it around the middle , get it to the overlapping full back, by this time everyone is back, we then pass it back inside and outside , inside and outside, then the looped cross comes in either to the keeper or headed away and then we are on the back foot, rinse repeat. We get it wide with Digne or Cash and there’s a cluster of villa players in the middle of the park all being man marked. No ones stretching play it’s boring, predictable. I understand if we have Roberto Carlos and Cafu as our wingbacks but what are we doing ? Can someone clear this up for me, I thought I knew football tactics to a certain degree , but I’m baffled by Gerrard ball. When the other team push up wing backs we are overloaded and the players don’t seem to know what to do. We need a manager that can get a tune out of these players and play to the strengths, not try to mould them to a fantasy tactic created by Gerrard. We don’t need more players, we have a squad full of talent, we need a manager that actually knows the tactical side of football. Gerrard has his reputation but I think he’s blagging it as a manager. Play a normal 433 just play the players in a normal system , it all seems too complicated for the players to get a grasp of. Do other teams play like this? Rant over.

Id start him against Bournemouth. Watkins and the ever frustrating Ings (thought he was great before us, standard villa) are just not doing it. Archer is sharp, put him in and let the England internationals earn their place back on merit. Gerrard won't obviously because I'm not sure he has the balls to drop those two just yet. Supported by Emi, Courtinho, Baily etc he's going to score, he's a perfect striker for the eye of the needle type of passers, I see him as far superior movement to Watkins, not so much Ings but he's clearly lost a yard and a bit of sharpness (movement used to be his bread and butter), which he can get back, but why not play the kid who's been banging goals in for fun. I'm sure Watkins will start. But I'd put Archer in and show the team that you play well you start. (Doesn't apply to Emi apparently) Imagine the confidence boost for the lad, given the nod in our first game of the season.

If we actually play a normal system and Gerrard accepts that the narrow overlap doesn't work that well for the type or quality of player we have then we look decent. When the system was one up top and we looked for width intensity and a couple wingers on the pitch we looked totally different. I don't get it with him. For me he always looks like he's running in heavy mud or takes just that too long to make a choice. Nothing suggests he's Grealish quality or the next big thing. Carney... I dont like VAR at all, just let it go back to mistakes are mistakes etc. Its good in theory but FFS the opportunity for bias is ridiculous, the clowns in the VAR room can just decide what is and isnt a foul and basically decide the fate of games with 50, 50 calls being reviewed on a pick and choose basis. Feels like you literally have to get through about 10 different phases of immaculate play to score a goal at old trafford and the like these days. Gerrard interview after the game, comments on the Bailey injury that intensity has been raised in training and niggles will happen. I really like how Gerrard mentions the upping of standards and comes across as someone who expects 100 percent off every player in every session. I remember a clip with him someone posted here. It was him as a pundit talking about going into training and seeing his team mates as competitors and he was keeping his shirt no matter what and that if he wasn't the best every day he would go home and reflect and make sure he was the best the next day.
