  1. Spurs passing around too easily. We need to start pressuring the ball.
  2. I don’t know about this. Fulham would have scored three or four goals in the game a few weeks ago under this Wenger rule. Tight offsides are saving us from conceding big chances pretty much every game. It’s a huge part of how we set up and we are very good at it. I don’t see us getting caught offside near as much at the other end. I think we will have to change our system if this rule comes in.
  3. Exactly. As things stand, the Saudis have the perfect template to essentially launder money into Newcastle from a sporting perspective. They have the critical mass and money within their own league to attract players there in the first place without FFP constraint, and can then loan said players around to their European partners as they please. One might say if you can’t beat them join them, but the Saudi league is a closed shop and there aren’t many other leagues, if any, outside FFP with the money and prestige to attract the players in the first place. I think the loophole will be closed or tightened at some point but Newcastle could make hay in the meantime. We might say “big deal” but most Villa fans would love the prospect of loaning a player like Neves for the rest of the season. It could make a huge difference.
  4. I thought Zaniolo was much better in the first half. He was involved in creating some decent opportunities. The pundits were complimentary. He seemed to tire in the second half. He doesn’t look like his conditioning and fitness is quite at the level it could or should be. It’s noticeable how close he stays to the right sideline, like a traditional right winger. But as a result, he seems to struggle to get into dangerous positions. I feel like there’s an element of hesitation there too, like he’s reluctant to drive forward and take a chance for whatever reason. But I’d say he played well overall and was definitely better than the guy who replaced him. Chiesa, on the other hand, is just a joy to watch. Boundless energy, work rate, trickery, dribbling, end product. And brilliant at tracking back and helping the defence. Zaniolo didn’t contribute enough in this area in my opinion, which brings me back to the fitness point I touched on earlier.
  5. In fairness to Matty, I think Digne is far more likely to be targeted. He’s slower and weaker defensively than Matty in my opinion. I haven’t seen Cash get caught out by a run in behind anything close to the number of times Digne has. In fact, I think Cash is quite solid defensively.
  6. We’ve beaten spurs three time. Twice away. We did a double over Arsenal in once season and beat Liverpool 7-2. So that’s at least six wins.
  7. We will need to be more ambitious than that to stay in the top 5. We’ve already won lots of games from those fixtures since we’ve been promoted so we should be taking some scalps this season.
  8. Brilliant win. The level McGinn is playing at is just incredible. I’d written him off 12 months ago. He’s everywhere and involved in everything. I felt we were vulnerable all second half and Fulham could have scored at any moment but we did enough. Fulham are not a bad side. Hopefully we get some rest during the internationals.
  9. Couldn’t agree more. It’s the referee’s job to know the rules. It shouldn’t be that difficult, especially now that they have VAR at their disposal to take a second look. We had armchair supporters calling foul because the defender deliberately headed the ball.
  10. Ironically, that Mings incident was a catalyst for another tweak to the rule at the time with a focus on whether the defender deliberately plays the ball or not.
  11. Brilliant for Emi. Brilliant profile for the club.
  12. I think Unai is combining Zaniolo and Bailey perfectly. They’re both getting opportunities. Coming off the bench doesn’t seem to be doing Bailey any harm. He’s having an impact. And I don’t think Zaniolo has been bad at all. He has a presence and gets involved. He was unlucky not to score today.
  13. Really? I thought it was going into the middle of the goal. Maybe it’s because the defender played it on purpose.
  14. Should that not go down as a Diaby goal? Like a shot on target that was deflected?
  15. I’d get cash off. He’s making some rash lunges.
  16. Brilliant, brilliant play from Bailey. He’s like a different player.
  17. Ok. Thanks. I didn’t actually know that. I assumed it was just a normal top two qualify where 9 points can be enough and 10 points is almost always enough. I just can’t help myself from having tunnel vision on the league at the moment. We can and should be looking to win all of our next three games. That would leave us on 28 points from 12 games, which would be a huge platform to take a champions league spot from. I’d be willing to take a chance with some rotation tonight.
  18. I would gamble and rest some of our most used players tonight. Even a point from the two games against AZ would leave us in good shape to qualify, with two easier games to finish the group.
  19. There may be plenty of lazy pundits out there but what I witnessed today from the media was an absolute Villa Love Fest.
  20. I feel like we paid Wolves too much respect today with our lineup. I’d have fancied us if we’d taken the game to them. We had very little going forward. Ref was appalling. Constantly ignoring fouls and inconsistent in decisions. Push on Watkins was the clearest penalty you will see all season. Heavy push in the back as the player was shooting. It’s the definition of a foul. Disgrace it was let go. Good goal by Torres but for our marquee defensive signing, he’s poor defensively and scarily slow. He’d be third choice behind Carlos and Konsa for me. Feels like two points dropped.
  21. He’s been a disaster defensively. Exposed every time he has some proper defending to do.
  22. Torres is a serious liability. Can’t run and can’t defend.
