  1. Ouch, what a loss. How much did we pay for him, 12m? He seemed to be so highly rated before we signed him, West Ham showed strong interest before we got him and the signing was seen as somewhat of a coup for us. Tells you everything when Brentford fans (posting here) would not have him back, I wonder what they thought of him when he was playing for them and was banging in the goals though? Could they be persuaded?
  2. Haven’t seen much of Benrahma tbh but many posters seem to rate/like him here so I would like to see us go for him, possibly a late/deadline day bid? He’s still working his way back to fitness after an ankle injury, hopefully he’ll be back to his best and it won’t have affected him, maybe we’re going to monitor him during preseason if gets a game or two for Brentford.
  3. I don’t think Brentford would want him, I can’t see many teams wanting Hogan tbh and certainly not for a decent price. He hasn’t shown any value. I think our best, and probably only, option would be a loan move (hopefully with an option, or even better an obligation, to buy). Bristol City perhaps?
  4. Who do you think we will (realistically) be able to sell and for what kind of fees? Bjarnason, Kodjia (might have attracted some attention during AFCON), Hogan (seems like the most difficult one) ?
  5. Is Kalinic part of the squad flying to the US? Any players left behind? I just wonder, if he gets some game time during preseason, maybe he shows some quality and we end up keeping him. Hasn’t really had time to prove himself here, I have no idea why (if) we are looking to sell him and whether or not he is unsettled. Steer came in when he was injured and maybe just (rightly) kept his place for solid & consistent performances, it would have been unfair to just drop him as soon as Kalinic returned to fitness and we were chasing promotion so wouldn’t have made sense to disrupt that by trying to reintegrate him. Foreign players tend to need time to adjust and gel with the team. Just don’t know what the actual situation is, I doubt anyone outside the club does. Not fussed if he leaves and is replaced, just wonder if he could still make an impact...
  6. Think some clubs will have noticed him in AFCON and show some interest, make some bids? I’d much prefer us to get rid of Hogan (difficult), and Kodjia is not a bad option from the bench, but if we could offload him for a decent fee it would be worth considering, he’s not getting any younger and probably isn’t up to PL standard and our style of play. Just wondering if we will be selling any players with all the quality signings we have been and are making...
  7. Wow, what a signing! Feels like we’re being spoiled with all this (for once) quality transfer activity. I can’t remember feeling this level of excitement going into a new season! UTV!
  8. Bruce to Newcastle! Is Ashley deliberating trying to sabotage the club?! Honestly cannot fathom how any aspiring PL team would go for such a manager in this day and age... Really hope we can take advantage of situations like this and push past these sides to avoid a relegation scrap. We could surprise a few people this season if we add some more quality to the side.

Fascinating interview with Petrov by Villa View: What an inspiration.
  10. If Burnley are asking for 10 mil, wouldn’t Etheridge be a better choice at a similar price? That’s if we were ever really interested in him... It would be great to get a quality keeper who could be a mainstay for a fair few years. I really don’t know if Steer is up to it but competition brings the best out of players...

In terms of reserves/youth players, that is an area of concern... we’ve released quite a few and there don’t appear to be many genuine prospects coming through other than Ramsey and O’Hare (who don’t seem ready and maybe a bit lightweight, we need to send a few out on loan again). I’m sure it’s an area we will address in time. Yes, I was referring to the first team/squad in terms of players. I really think we can have a good season if we make a few more quality signings. Deano will implement an attacking style with a youthful, energetic team. We won’t just sit back and defend all the time, though I expect us to have a hard time against the top teams (hoping we can upset a few teams occasionally though, take them by surprise). I expect us to be able to do well against teams like Brighton & Southampton, but we could surprise a few people this season... Again, depends on the signings we make too.

We have a relatively young team, I don’t mean academy graduates or 18-19 year olds. Jack is only 23, McGinn & El Ghazi - 24, Wesley - 22, Mings is still quite young at 26. These players are only going to improve and will be coached well. I have a lot of faith in Deano. The signings we have made and are targeting are all of a good age too. Guilbert - 24, Hause & Targett - 23.

Bruce being linked to the Newcastle job now Really hope we can try and push past the lower level, and potentially unstable, teams in the league and aim for a top half position. Theres always going to be the usual top 6 (although Chelsea and maybe Arsenal could struggle), followed by teams like Leicester, Everton & West Ham, but we may be able to compete with the likes of Bournemouth, Watford and Wolves (really want us to bring Wolves down a peg or two). Depending on how well we strengthen the team, I think it’s entirely possible for us to be better than the likes of Burnley, Brighton, Soton, Palace and our fellow promoted clubs anyway. I must say though, I don’t know how Burnley keep doing it. On paper, their players appear to be quite poor or technically weak. Dyche has done an amazing job but surely they can’t keep it up? It’s not going to be easy but I am not even considering a relegation scrap. We have the right manager/coach and some exciting young players, feeling more optimistic now that we have Mings back and I’m sure he’ll only improve with further coaching from Terry. I think that has helped him a lot and he has spoken about the positive influence he has had on his game.
  14. Has been mentioned before but I do wonder if it would be worth trying to sign Lemina from So’ton for the DM position. Maybe on a loan to buy deal. Haven’t seen much of him but he must be pretty good if he could get games at Juventus, didn’t get game time for So’ton last season due to injury then wasn’t selected when he returned to fitness. Wants to leave now... Also, Santamaria seems like a good option after seeing his stats. Covers a lot of ground and gets stuck in defensively. Seems like there are more affordable alternatives to Philips out there. Billing is another DM that has been mentioned. Of course, it’s almost pointless speculating as the club will already have their targets in mind and we can’t influence anything but it’s part of the fun of transfer season
  15. Just glad we’ve got him, rarely is a player such a perfect “fit” for a club. Feeling a lot better about the season now, can’t wait for more signings!
  16. We could take advantage of the Newcastle situation, anyone worth taking from them? Lascelles? Schar? Benitez going should make things easier for us... they may be one of the favourites for relegation now.
  17. Sorry mate, but your comment instantly reminded me of getting destroyed by Southampton in the league and Arsenal in the FA Cup final. Sherwood was an atrocious manager. I’ll admit, I started to like the guy when we got some good results and he kept us up with his “Pashun” but he proved how clueless he was after burdening us with trash like Richards, Lescott & Gestede. He has to take some responsibility for part of our decline and ultimate relegation. I think we handed long contracts to tripe like Gardner & Bacuna then too. As heavily criticised as they were, our “transfer committee” at the time actually brought some quality players in but we did not know how to utilise them. Garde was treated like crap and severely restricted - we never saw what he was capable of. At last, we have a decent manager after having put up with so much crap.
  18. I think Purslow pretty much covered it (our transfer strategy) in his interview, alongside Deano, stating that we have no interest in flirting with relegation and want to make sure we sign the right players and will be very busy identifying and pursuing targets. There’s also a FCG meeting tonight where we might get some more info/details... So I suppose we would all be better off sitting back and adopting a wait & see approach. It is difficult to be patient and not get caught up in the excitement though but I see no reason not to have faith and confidence in our management and owners. Now is the time for hope & positivity, we’ve put up with so much dross for so long, it’s refreshing to be able to actually look forward with genuine encouragement and enthusiasm. And what a relief to have discarded the cast offs and deadwood! Really feel we are building on a solid foundation now. Most of all, I really do think we have the right man in Deano who is essentially a head coach and works with the players and regularly works on improving them. Onward and upwards! UTV
  19. Everything is paper BS atm, really quite annoying.
  20. Too many rumours & speculation, have we actually made a bid for a player yet? We don’t know who we are targeting or what kind of player, hopefully we will get an idea from the first couple of signings (not really counting the Jota deal as we were essentially just getting rid of a useless player in Gardner, good deal for us). Whatever happens, I think we have to get our few decent youngsters out on loan into the Championship if possible (rather than L1, L2), they need to take that next step up. Namely,: O’Hare, Davis, Green, RHM, Doyle-Hayes, Revan. See if they can prove themselves and if they do well then give them a shot at getting into our squad, otherwise we would need to offload them. The jump up to PL is going to be huge and we just don’t have anywhere near enough quality left in our squad. We’re going to need a hell of a lot of decent signings but I trust Deano & co to get it right. Just finding it hard to be patient atm & aren’t the weekends so boring now without Villa playing?
  21. Cheer up mate, we just got promoted... Time to be positive, none of us has any idea what the actual transfer strategy is. If we manage to get the loanees in (who played a massive part in our success) we will still have a core of good players who know each other and work well together. None of the players we released would have made much of a contribution, clearly not good enough for PL level. Trust in Deano and our ownership.
  22. Wasn’t he almost a complete liability for Liverpool, always out of position and responsible for many conceded goals?
  23. On the team spirit & togetherness subject...if we sort permanent deals for the loan players (Mings, Hause, El Ghazi, Abraham) then that won’t be such an issue or concern as they were a massive part of our success and integrated so well - can’t really remember when there was such a strong bond and relationship between players and fans and it’s especially rare, or even unique, when we didn’t actually own some of these key figures. Grealish & McGinn are our own, most important players so if we could add the loanees to them then we would still have a good group, it might not have to be the complete overhaul that many are anticipating. We do need to strengthen in key positions though and try to get some squad depth. I just can’t help but feel impatient, would like to see these guys signed and sorted and then get other targets in. Would be good to have the “spine” of our team set in place. Have a lot of faith in our management team though, so far they’ve made the right decisions - releasing and offloading the right players, none of whom would’ve been up to the standard required and would not have contributed much at all. Just waiting for reinforcements now and we need a lot! Have to be patient (as difficult as that is!). UTV
