I'd say Purslow may try and put the blame at Lange's door. Might see a whole new structure put in place - new DoF/Coach etc.

Pretty sure we were trying to flog him this time last year and no one wanted him - certainly not for that sort of money.

Celtic fans seemed to think his recruitment wasn't great - particularly in defence. Would be great if he brought the guy who scouted Wesley Fofana.

Seems to be a big thing in Italy. Instead of paying off managers they just keep them on the payroll and bring them back as required when their replacements don't work out. Happens quite often.

It could be a convenient arrangement for Rodgers to wrap things up at Leicester and move to us - it's clear that his relationship is pretty strained there now. It'll be even more so when Fofana leaves. I reckon Leicester, Rodgers, and Villa could come to a mutual agreement pretty easily and there wouldn't need too much money in pay-offs. Rodgers would be looking at our squad right now and think he could do something with it. He signed both Coutinho and Ings for Liverpool.

Wasn't actually intending to compare Rooney and Lampard there. Rooney did really well last year - it's clear that he has no ego when it comes to being a manager unlike Lampard and Rooney. Turning down an interview with Everton spoke volumes. Lampard and Gerrard's egos as managers are founded on being great players. Their perceived entitlement to walk into the jobs they have done and earn the salaries they're currently doing is obscene when good managers that don't have the same profile can't get a look in.

I agree that there's definitely plenty of talent there, but Rodgers all but guarantees us PL survival I reckon. I'd even go with Hassenhutl (Austrian I know...) to reduce the risk. Any newcomer to the PL comes with risk.

It's also where Lampard was shown to be pretty poor despite having more or less a premier league standard first 11 at Derby. Yet walked into a job at Chelsea (and failed....).

Think now's the time for a low risk appointment which Rodgers/Potter/Poch would be. Don't fancy any of the up and coming continental managers at this stage. Would be too much like Remi Garde replacing Tim Sherwood and that was a complete fiasco.

Will be interesting to see if the club do any further business over the next few days. I suspect they'll not spend any more money as it's almost certain a new manager will be here in January and will need to be given funds. Maybe a CB on loan at most.

If anything I reckon he's more toxic than positive at this stage. It's clear the players are stifled by what he's asking (or not asking them) to do. Might be a lift with him gone.

Think things are aligning for Rodgers - I'm probably happy with that. He'll get a tune out of Coutinho and probably a good few others.

Been watching managers fail at Villa for 30 years now - it's clear how this ends for Gerrard at this stage. He seems further down the road to being sacked now than Smith was when he was sacked. Maybe that's just my bias??

They're supposed to be after Neal Maupay also. Would be class if we went for Joao Pedro.

He was considered a big deal (literally and figuratively) a few seasons back. Deffo worth a look.

If he’s on a free he’ll require insane wages (like Kamara is likely on). That’ll massively alter the long term strategy the club have in place. I think a loan is more likely with insurance money from Carlos covering the extra wages. Means they can go ahead and strengthen midfield and/or striker as they had already planned.

Just wondering which other new villa signings this has happened to? I can think of Wes, Okore, Nilis, Kozak. Feels like there’s more though. It must be well above average for a club’s new signings though.

Think if Gerrard goes the chances are the season will be write-off regardless. Unless we get a Gregory type new manager bounce which are few and far between these days.

They’re trying to sign Marko Arnautovic for £10m - he’s 33. If we’re trying to pull the wool over their eyes now’s the time to do it. On that valuation we should be getting Grealish money for McGinn.

He’ll probably get rid of Lange along with Gerrard as a bit of a scapegoat.
