    Doug’s legacy is the real problem here. It always used to aggravate me when uninformed media would tell us what a great job he had done of redeveloping Villa Park. He made a pig’s ear of it. After the Taylor report, a generously costed masterplan incorporating our most iconic asset (the old Trinity) would have seen us with an historic and beautiful stadium which was large enough.

    I was dismayed by the trademark but very impressed by the novel use of gold and claret for the lion in the digital version.

    That’s not how it works though. The €9m plus his wages are divided by the number of years of his contract up to a maximum of 5 and that is the expenditure for FFP per year.

    Another slight niggle is the way Luiz gets sucked into pettiness and personal battles instead of focusing on his job.

    Yes, and I think that is why the club believe they are compliant with the rules. I am not saying I agree with the loophole, if you can call it that.

    In terms of FA rules, the issue will be whether Heck’s new badge is a “material change”. It is compared to the fan-approved round badge. It probably isn’t compared to Lerner mark II.

    The thing about this design is that, even if there was something else I preferred, this one captures something that Heck’s doesn’t. It’s hard to put into words. The claret on blue, the gold border and the lovely shape.

    Personally I would leave the Holte mosaics well alone on the basis that it is artwork.

    Try Aston Villa in blue, then you have a bit of consistency with the year and the border. Edit: this one is tantalisingly close if we’re going with a shield.

    “Examination” is just one of the legal stages (I think - I am a Trusts and Estates lawyer and know nothing about trademarks!)

    Seeing them all together, it’s so obvious that the Lerner one is miles better than the new one and that the round one is better than both of them. Look how proud and solid our name appears on the round one. There’s a “permanent class” look about it.
