  1. The National - Theory of the Crows. Loved Boxer and Alligator, their earlier stuff is a lot more country twinged and maybe lacks the more... anthemic is the best word I suppose... songs of those albums but good all the same. I really enjoy this song in particular.
  2. And the Welsh Scottish and English are all the same race Ian . Although I agree, in a way. I'm just unsure why it has any bearing on class. It may define your class (stereotype ahoy but black people are more likely to be working class IIRC) but by saying 'I'm working class' I doubt it matters whether you're white, black, or a discerning shade of grey, at the end of the day you're still working class. Not sure I get that either but hey ho.
  3. Not sure why a class thread needs a racial qualification, acwilliams. Bit of a pet peeve of mine.
  4. Dad is a retired carpenter and joiner who worked for the councils housing association, mom's a school cleaner, come from Kingstanding, but am currently at university. I'd consider myself working class and very much so. Funnily enough one of my best mates at uni is quite upper class, we get on well but have very different philosophies.
  5. Ah just remembered another one. I was interviewed with a mate whilst standing outside of Pizza Hut in town waiting for the rest of my mates to come out last year by the BBC Asian Network, they asked me about the news that Gordon Brown was looking into more compulsory PE or something. It was pissing it down so I'm surprised they managed to hear anything over the rain.
  6. Tried marijuana once, don't like smoke anyway and it did sod all so that was it. Beyond that, nothing. Don't really appeal tbh.
  7. Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil... tune Moby - Porcelain here. Great chilled song.
  8. I share my surname with a BBC News presenter, an Australian comedian and muscian (and a shitload of other Australians apparently, which is funny because I used to think it was a weird name...) and a town in Oz also has the name, with the suffix 'bury'. Martin Shaw attended my school, along with a Steve Winwood, who I'm lead to believe is famous . I met William Hague, briefly, whilst in secondary school, after having been picked out as bright enough to ask him a question and reflect well on the school. I asked him about encouraging childrens sports, and the Olympics. I've also run into Jlloyd Samuel in Minworth Asda, still wearing training gear and looking thoroughly pissed off. I tried to buy Gary Cahill a pint in the Bottle of Sack in Sutton, after seeing a tall bloke who I thought I recognised walk in. I was quickly told it was him and ran off to buy ask him 'if I could buy [him] a pint, cos [he's] a legend!'. He just said no. I met Curtis Davies (with Darren Carter) in WS1 in Walsall before he joined Villa. Me and a mate asked him if he was gonna join us , he smiled and said '...You never know'. And finally as kid I've appeared in the Evening Mail listening to a coconut (the photographer made me do it...), and also in mid 90's TV series confessions, as one of the kids they used to have on. That's about it... pretty crap I reckon!

    Top Gear

The 8C has been knocking about as a concept for years, I'm amazed they finally made. And yes, it is an utterly stunning car. the only blemish is the vent on the wing. Looks like a last minute tack on job.
  10. I've never been quite sure where I stand on Thatcher (although I figure in keeping with the topic, I'll know when she's dead. On top of her grave...). She did some good, and she did some bad by doing good at the expense of a fairly large group of people. I think the very fact she divides opinion so much could be a reason for her not to have one. I seem to remember someone saying she should have a urinal for a headstone.
  11. I don't think I could decide between DDL, Bale and Crowe. DDL does the more challenging roles. Bale is always brilliant in films I enjoy. Crowe is similar to Bale but is maybe a bit more high profile. Argh! I can't split them.

Really expensive way to ruin a really expensive nice car. Eurgh.
  13. ^ Brilliant tune. Elbow - Asleep in the Back.
  14. Mono - Halcyon (Beautiful Days) In a bit of a chilled mood, perfic.
  15. I knew that one. There was a really interesting program about it on the telly a few months ago. Actually it wasn't all THAT interesting. Same place I found out about it. And no it wasn't...
  16. Vaguely inspired by Connells latest thread... The lead singer of the Eels' dad was the fella who came up with the theory of parellel universes.
  17. The Barry thread starts to take on the distinct feeling of his new home...
  18. I may be wrong... but is that a Hertha Berlin top Rev?

I actually think that Brave New World is probably the more relevant as well. There are a great number of 'Orwellian' echoes in politics today but BNW could probably have greater parallels to today and the future. It might perhaps be more accurate to say that aspects of both could come to fruition (worryingly). I also think that BNW is perhaps the better concept, but it's not quite as well written. None of the characters are particularly likeable, although I supose it's arguable thats the very point of the book... still, a very very interesting read. I had to compare both of them for my A Level English Lit course, specifically comparing Bernard and Winston as characters and vessels for the authors aim. Interesting stuff. Not read any of their other works, although a lot of it sounds fascinating. Huxley wrote another book on Brave New World, BNW Revisted or something like that, looking at the way science was heading or along those lines at least, which I wanted to have a look at but never got round to. I don;t really have the time these days between uni books, drinking, and job searching to read them, or anything else right now.

1984 is an incredible book. Orwells style at times makes it a bit of a slog but what he is describing is brilliant. An awful lot of what he came up with in the book has, in one way or another, started to appear in the modern world. I'd also recommend looking at Brave New World after 1984, the books generally get compared with each other for their different portayals of dystopia.
  21. Just got hold of some of their stuff, well worth a listen. Bit different, reminds me of a few 60's/70's bands my dad was into whose names escape right now. Coupled with a bit of a hint of the Beach Boys.
  22. Sorry to answer for the Gen but I believe it is Escape by Craig Armstrong. Unless they changed it again in the last few games.
  23. BOF, why can't I get a temp job?
  24. It makes me feel vaguely sick.
