  1. Surprised at the negativity in here - not his best game but he did fine, would have scored I think if not chopped down, and while I agree he’s not in peak form I think he’ll be fine long term so not sure anyone needs to be jumping on him.
  2. I don’t blame the ref as such for this one - it’s the rules a but it’s nuts how Milivojevic slashing Watkins down before he took a shot on goal is the same punishment (a yellow card) as a slightly mistimed but meaningless tackle in midfield
  3. Right so if you’re Beale even more reason to stay put.
  4. I’m not disagreeing with you as such but I also don’t know who his agent is - could have been a throwaway comment in a wider chat about something completely different. Obviously most likely thing is it’s just a little contract negotiation. He has a deal for another 2 years anyway so it’s not one to lose sleep over.
  5. Sometimes these things are ten-second throwaway comments. His agent might have said “at the moment he’s not signing a deal until he sees there’s a definite pathway to the team as he’d like to be playing more.” Everything else in that piece could come from that sentence.
  6. Right, especially if the whole ‘Gerrard does great and goes to Liverpool’ piece ever happens. He might well have the choice between Liverpool assistant and Villa manager. I wouldn’t be rushing off the Charlton for a while yet.
  7. David Hytner, who famously broke the news Gareth Bale would be signing for Inter Milan right before he went to Real Madrid. Wouldn’t worry.
  8. “If he’s not an upgrade”
  9. …or because Nassef is their biggest shareholder!
  10. Getting very common in lots of sports. Fanatics have a bunch of replica/merch markets sewn up in the American sports especially.
  11. I kind of get what you’re saying in that players could theoretically run their contracts down or something if they 100% knew he was going to try to sign them but Villa wouldn’t just accept cheaper transfer deals outside of that.
  12. This is an offshoot of moneyball/bad data use. The stats show subs made in the 61st and 71st minutes have the most impact on games. Therefore managers now all think they must make subs in those minutes. A misunderstanding of causation.
  13. Clean sheet for Emi in a 1-0 win over Uruguay. Cash debut for Poland, on as a sub in an easy win over Andorra. Says Lewandowski “no Ollie Watkins”.
  14. Sad as it is to say, bringing Young on with ten mins to go 2-0 up against Wolves has ended up costing Smith his job and wrecked our season.
  15. Nah it’s a smart move. They expect to go down but he’ll have a solid shot at bringing them right back up. Then he’s a PL manager again with two promotions on his CV. He’ll always get a top Championship job after that and very possibly another PL shot if he makes a good go of surviving either this season or when they come back up. And probably bank £4m in the meantime.
  16. It’s very unlikely that both Steven Gerrard and Emi Martinez will be with us in late 2023. One of them, sure, but the laws of football suggest we will see pretty high turnover of players over four transfer windows between now and then, and the average PL manager last 18 months. Not one to worry about.
  17. Ok I’m going to bow out of this conversation now because it started when I responded to you saying “Not one pundit said that Gerrard would be an upgrade on Smith” so I’m just getting really confused. Sorry if I am being dense.
  18. Clearly a Board/DOF appointment then not Smith.
  19. But you would only do that looking for an upgrade, especially if it was a considered appointment? Maybe I’ve misunderstood your point.
  20. If he’s not an upgrade we have just thrown the cards in the air for no reason, so I hope he is
  21. He didn’t say she was talking to him, just that he was there.
  22. Haha sure he’s struggled but I was responding to a post about attacking output.
  23. I know what you mean but my point still stands that they aren’t what we can think of as the tougher games in the division. Brighton haven’t won for two months.
  24. I am with you here. Smith has been sacked for not having this team pushing Europe. I’ll be pleased if Gerrard keeps us up but to be termed a success he needs to win a lot of games.
