  1. Good shout on Tello. Speedy devil who can run for days. Certainly not ready for prime time, though. I'd almost prefer to buy him and loan him out to a Championship side.
  2. Can we all at least agree that Birkir Bjarnason is a badass name?
  3. According to his whoscored page, Engels is a very weak tackler and a poor passer. Good in the air, however. https://www.whoscored.com/Players/108493/Show/Björn-Engels
  4. I learned a long time ago -- probably after I was 16, maybe even when I was 21 or later -- that one shouldn't think in absolutes. To say everybody is who they are at 16 who they will be for the rest of their lives is just as stupid as saying nobody is who they are at 16.
  5. The reactions here to the money for Mings and other signings reminds me of something I saw a few years ago in the NBA. The NBA, like a lot of American sports leagues, has a salary cap for its teams, and along with that cap, there's a salary floor (a minimum teams must spend on player payroll). That salary cap and floor is directly proportionate to the revenue the league brings in on an annual basis. Well, a few years ago the NBA signed a new TV deal with ESPN for billions of dollars. This meant that the salary cap jumped significantly in one year, and that first summer of free agency the players were signing these huge money deals, and every reaction was the same "$15 million for that guy!?" etc. It was just the new reality of NBA salaries, and I believe this summer we're having that same kind of reaction to transfer fees. Yes, they seem high compared to what we've grown accustomed to, but this is the new reality of the sport. And with players getting quicker and even more athletic and technical than they were before, capable defenders who can keep up with them are more valued than ever before, so we're really seeing the spike in prices for defenders like Mings. I'm not thrilled at paying so much for a player who has injury concerns, but this is what it is now. I can only hope that we stick around in the Premier League long enough that we're no longer cognizant of it. UTV
  6. Anybody else growing concerned that the Wesley signing hasn't been announced yet?
  7. French Mbappe is Portuguese for "Portuguese Mbappe." It's a confusing language.
  8. LOL, the problem with typing on my phone.
  9. I get what you're saying, but I think we as fans have a tendency to place too much value in the intangibles. Like, this thread has been filled with fans talking about how ridiculous it would be for Villa to spend £20 million on Championship players with no PL experience, yet now when there's a reported offer of £50 million for our Championship player with no PL experience (an offer I don't believe to be true) suddenly it's "that's not enough!" If this ownership group truly believes in the "Moneyball" model or whatever you want to call "a smart, efficient strategy", then getting a 1818% return on a £2.75 million investment after only a year is exactly the kind of move they would do. But, again, I don't believe a word of it.
  10. I love McGinn, and I don't believe a word of the report. That said, we paid what, £2.75 million for him a year ago? If we can turn that into £50 million, you do it without thinking twice.
  11. Can't wait for him to report that Villa rejected the offer.
  12. And the price of a good CB is going up anyway.
  13. All right, I've been offline for 36 hours. What did I miss?
  14. Aston Villa will sign another player at some point in the future.
  15. I've suffered enough watching Yedlin underwhelm with the US National Team. I don't need to watch him every Saturday as well.
  16. Why not? I think he's already pretty good, can still get better, and also provides positional versatility if needed.
  17. He meant for an American. Speaking as an American who chose to support Villa when at least 80% of PL fans here choose a top six club, he's not wrong.
  18. Sorry if it's been brought up, as I'm catching up on a lot of pages, but as far as Wesley and Maupay are concerned, based on what little of seen of Wesley since he was signed, I don't think it's out of the question that they could play together at the same time.
  19. Not a lot of people enjoy getting bombed in foreign countries.
  20. Has it only been nine years? Feels like 20.
  21. To eliminate an avenue to possible improvement on principle is foolish, whether you're running a football club, or living your own life. It's like saying "I refuse to read books because I don't want to make Amazon wealthier."
  22. Exactly. I understand the desire to only accept loans with an option to buy, but as far as solely helping develop another club's players, if that player's development helps us stay in the Premier League for another season, seems like a fair trade to me. Longer we're in, more time we'll have to develop our players.
