  1. While I think a lot of what Zat says is, let's call it, excessive, I tend to agree with him about Coutinho. He's a good player, but he's still talked about as if he's the player he was his last few years at Liverpool. He isn't. Now he's a talented, but mercurial player. When he's playing well, it's thrilling to watch, but there are too many uninspiring spells. To be clear, I'm not saying Coutinho is bad. I think he's quite good, I just wish he was more consistent. Then again, I can say that abour 90% of the team.
  2. It's not terrible, but I wouldn't call it a strength. And he's not good when pressured, which is a problem considering how many top teams press high.
  3. With Kamara we've added a player comfortable on the ball who is just as capable of passing to his left as his right. With Diego Carlos we've added a player who is comfortable on the ball who is just as capable of passing to his left as his right, and is comfortable playing on the left or right. In other words, we no longer have to play exclusively down the left in attack, which will make us a lot more difficult to defend.
  4. I think Ezri is a good player and can be a better player, but he's so limited with the ball that he really isn't a fit for what Gerrard envisions this team being.
  5. If you remove PSG the average ranking of Ligue 1 drops to 59.04 but if you remove Inter from Serie A it drops them to 62.54, so the gap widens a bit more, yes. But a 3-point gap is already significant, which is reflected by the gap between the Premier League and La Liga. Regardless the size, @Philosopher's comment that Serie A is on the same level of Ligue 1 "at best" when it's clearly above remains off base.
  6. Using 538's SPI metric, which is a predictive metric used for gambling that measures the individual strength of teams, here are the average SPI ratings of the six leagues you've mentioned. Premier League: 72.97 Spain: 69.97 Bundesliga: 69.27 Serie A: 63.42 Ligue 1: 60.54 Portugal: 52.05 There's a sizable gap between the top three and Serie A, but there's also a significant gap between Serie A and France, and a much larger between all of them and Portugal.
  7. If you want to say Serie A is behind Spain and Germany, fine, it's a perfectly defensible argument. But to say it's "at best" on the level of Ligue 1and Portugal is talking out your ass.
  8. The numbers can't tell us which it is on their own, but combined with what we see with our eyes, I think it's more the former than the latter. Unless he's the greatest aerial threat in the history of the world, the more he's forced to attempt by the way Burnley plays, the more likely he's going to lose some. The only way to truly know from the numbers would be to see how every other player would do when forced to attempt as many as he does. All that said, the fact he still rates this highly despite having more attempts than most others is generally a good sign that the results are "sticky," which indicate it's a genuine skill of his.
  9. I brought up the aerial aspect because it's an important part of the way we defend considering our shape. Rest assured he's good at other things too.
  10. 23% of Premier League CBs won a greater share of their aerial duels than Tarkowski. Of course, what that doesn't say is how many of those duels they were in. Tarkowski was in plenty playing for Burnley. For raw aerial duels won, his 4.97 duels won per match was in the 97th percentile. Long story short, he's good in the air, and we need improvements there. Tarkowski and Kamara are clear upgrades over Konsa and Luiz/Nakamba in that area.
  11. Tarkowski finished in the 77th percentile among Premier League CBs in winning aerial battles. Mings finished in the 56th percentile. Kamara was 68th percentile of all midfielders in the top five leagues. Ezri Konsa was in the 20th percentile. For a team that tries to pack the middle and force opponents outside, being able to clear crosses is a key tenet of the defense. Tarkowski is a better passer than his numbers show because of the way Burnley played, but with Kamara in the side, it alleviates some of the need for him to be great. It's his ability in the air and everything else he does as a defender that will make him an invaluable part of this team. I'm all for it if it happens.
  12. They do count in the score, but they don't give you an accurate portrayal of how good a goal scorer a striker is or will continue to be. 78% of penalty attempts result in a goal. This season in the Premier League 11.8% of all shots resulted in a goal. So, essentially, a penalty is seven times more likely to be a goal than a shot. Also, there's a huge difference between leagues in how often penalties are awarded. This year Premier League teams averaged 5.15 penalties per team. The teams in Serie A averaged 7.1. Finally, Belotti scored three penalties this season. As a team, Aston Villa attempted three.
  13. Not going to insult Brighton because I believe it's a well-run club that performs past its means, and should be applauded for it, but for Brighton fans to believe Newcastle or Villa aren't a step up just because they've just now managed to finish in the top half of the Premier League for the first time in their history is laughable. They've been a League One club for the majority of their existence.
  14. I do, yeah. There were plenty of reports in January that we were trying to get it done then, but Brighton wanted too much money and they opted to wait til this summer when he'd be cheaper. Plus, by all accounts, Bissouma is ready to move on as well. Whether he considers us the place he wants to move to, who knows?
  15. The site he writes for doesn't have a 100% accuracy rate, as they do aggregate other reporting, but they have enough of a track record to suggest they do have some intel. They were early on Kamara, and originally wrote about Villa's interest in Suarez in January.
  16. Take away penalties and these are Belotti's Serie A goal tallies since the 2017-18 season 17-18: 10 18-19: 10 19-20: 9 20-21: 9 21-22: 5 Per 90 17-18: 0.34 18-19: 0.27 19-20: 0.27 20-21: 0.28 21-22; 0.33 Ollie Watkins has been better in the Premier League, where the numbers suggest it's more difficult to score, than Belotti has been in Serie A.
  17. That's just it. Nearly every club in France outside PSG is broke. It's where the best deals are. In England, Yves Bissouma costs £40 million. In France he'd cost £20 million.
  18. He’s not. As I’ve mentioned earlier in this thread, he's an older, slower, less efficient version of what we already have. Had one outstanding season five years ago and over 30% of his goals since have come on penalties.
  19. Just to take everybody's temperature. We're being connected to Luis Suarez for all the obvious reasons, but what about Edinson Cavani?
  20. Wonder if the lie is having a difficult time getting through Chiellini's shoulder.
  21. He says he hasn't agreed to anything but that he wants to stay in Europe. Which means he's already signed a deal with Villa.
  22. I think that's part of what makes Kamara so attractive to Gerrard. His size and experience as a CB means he can drop back between Mings and Konsa/Chambers to serve as a back three while both Digne and Cash move forward in attack.
  23. Botman. I like Jonathan David, but I don't know if he's an improvement over what we currently have. I think Botman would be.
  24. I don't know his Football Manager numbers, but I'm very familiar with him in FIFA
