Rovers13
The figuring out what to change is my issue. So many goals I concede in the highlights are just from them going through the center of my defense, I don't know what I can tactically do to avoid that. That's just one example. Cliffy Biro
Exactly what i find aswell, how do you stop a striker just strolling past your defender?
Milfner
Stayed up first season with Daggers in League One. Maaaaaaan it's hard to deal with a 30k per week wage budget and a tiny reputation. Struggling to get good enough players in, massive struggle right now.
tarjei
Has anyone tried being really simple with tactics? As in use very minimal instructions and just use roles and formations that fit your players? I'm going to try it, because the only success I ever had was when I joined roma mid season and didn't put on any significant instructions and the team just won most matches for no reason, went from 12th in December to 3rd at the end of the season. That was in fm13 though. I'm going to just focus on everything else and getting the other stuff perfect without being some tactical genius, because I'm **** woeful at it. I guess my question is could it work? It's a good way to start. Basically don't use any instruction if you're not certain what they do... and keep things simple (not too many specialist roles). Then introduce tweaks one by one, and don't get discouraged from a bad match as it can just as well be moral/pressure/complacency causing it. Watching the match on extended or comprehensive will give you a better idea as you can more accurately tell it's the mindset of players or shape of the tactic that is the trouble, so I'd recommend doing that while you work your way to a successful set up. Also, one thing that many people don't realize is that the formation you set up is your defensive shape, while the roles you select will mostly change the attacking shape. An attacking role will not just join in on the attack, but essentially bomb forward as far as possible at most opportunities. An attacking strategy does not only change the mindset of the team but will make global changes that causes many things to change, such as tempo of play, width, closing down, defensive line, etc, which again can cause issues like rushing a decision, inability to control a game or link areas together. Fluidity changes the creative mentality of the team, but also dramatically changes the shape of the team in both ends of the pitch and the distance between players. Too much fludity can tire players out and make you vulnerable to counter if used wrong. Being too rigid can leave the space between defence and attacks too big if used wrong. Frankly this side of the game is too complicated for the largest base of FM-players, the casual one. There are soo many frustrated people on the forums that are moaning about the game, but they don't realize the complexity and the massive room for error there is in the tactical side of it. I spend way too much time on the game and I'm still a novice. There are a few guides on the forums that might seem generic and almost patronizing to a long time FM'er, but they really do have substance. Long story short when making a tactic. Assign a good mixture of roles (defensive-supportive-attacking) in all areas of the team. Envisage the attacking shape on the basis of the roles and try to make them overlap and create movements patterns that in turn create passing patterns that are angled (not sideways). In example 2 defensive roles and 2 supportive role in defence, or add an attacking role in your having a good day. 1 or 2 defensive role, 1 or 2 supportive roles and one attacking role in midfield. 1 supportive and one attacking role in attack. But also make sure that the attacking players don't attack the same space as the players ahead of them and that the supportive players don't drop into the same space as someone is running into. In addition to that try and make the roles work together. If your striker is dropping deep, the CBs will be dragged out of position, so make someone attack that space. If you have holding midfielder, the opposition midfield will try to close them down which will in turn create space in the hole. If you have an attacking winger, make the fullback supportive.. If you have a great attacking wing back, make the winger supportive and and make sure a midfilders is covering the space that the fullback leaves behind, etc A heads up also on the attacking shape. If you have 2 CBs they tend to be very vulnerable unless protected by a DMC, or defensive CMs. When your fullbacks are bombing down the flanks, pause the match and look at your CBs. If a single direct pass will leave them 2 v 2 then you are at risk. That pause trick is actually quite useful at any time. Damn I was gonna write a short reply, but I just go on and on..

Farlz
Villa are a lot better to manage after this update, 19 games in and I'm in 6th place pushing for the Champions League. Having some money to work with is great.
Cliffy Biro
Nice going, do you use all your own stuff? Currently 12 games in on mine with a 5-0-7 so not going too well went for a basic flat 442 but think i'll have to change, doing simple tactics and roles hasn't really worked. Cliffy Biro
Nice ive just changed to a 4231, high pressure high tempo sort of thing, going well so far but ive seen it loads of times where it works for a few games and then fades so i wont get carried away. Rovers13
Since creating my 4231 12 games unbeaten with villa? That's amazing. Especially with a formation that seems so hard on this game.
Cliffy Biro
Yea i dont really expect it to last and its not very solid defensively but im not complaining atm. Gone from 16th but safe to a few points off top 6. I dont really know what to tweak to make it more defensively solid so im not going to mess with it. Cliffy Biro
Bertrand is a CWB on attack as i have Gabby as an IF(S) so i have some balance down the left, lowton is a wingback on support and Albrighton is a winger on attack again for some balance. That was my thinking anyway but i will change them and see what difference it makes.

I suggest you make 2 other version of it, and one being focus on counter or defensive. Farlz
So I was 10 games unbeaten and then I lose 3-0 to Chelsea and Everton & to top it off, West Ham knock me out of the FA Cup. Everything has just turned to shit so quickly, FM is so frustrating at times.
