BOF Posted January 5, 2005 Moderator Posted January 5, 2005 There seems to be 2 opinions on why we aren't signing Amdy Faye. The first opinion is that DOL now needs that money to fund a move for a more urgent signing. The signing of an attacking player, and that he doen't have enough money to buy Faye AND the other target. The second opinion is that Villa pulled out of the race at the 11th hour when it became clear that Boro were about to beat us to the race, and did it to save face. Which camp do you sit in ?
Tegis Posted January 5, 2005 VT Supporter Posted January 5, 2005 Save face! I'm that depressed about our club right now
ozvillafan Posted January 5, 2005 VT Supporter Posted January 5, 2005 We're more desperate for quality/cover in other areas of the pitch. I'll be optimistic and say that's what we are doing.
JohnCresswell Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 Ellis: "Hey David, it looks like that Andy fellow won't accept £7.50 a week as wages and is going to Middlesbrough. How about we withdraw and keep all that lovely money in case you find someone else in the summer?" O'Leary: "Do what you want. You do anyway."
BOF Posted January 5, 2005 Author Moderator Posted January 5, 2005 John, if that conversation (or a variant) took place, DOL would not let HDE come out and say that it was Dave who pulled out of the deal.
Richard Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 ^^^^ exactly wot JC said, although I do have the full transcript of the conversation here
bromsgrove_avfc Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 Its obvious we were gazumped! First we make no comment and won't answer to every bit of speculation the media makes, then were withdrawing from the player were not commenting on and answering speculation in the media! I only hope this makes us look foolish enough to embaress DE into pulling someting impressive out the hat. Ellis if your listening I'd be very happy with: Reid Dawson Malbranque Ashton
Peter_B Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 It also looks better for us, PR wise, if we are beaten by Middlesbrough in a straight transfer fight, than if we just withdraw 'because, erm, the manager suddenly doesnt like him'. Thats assuming that you believe that Ellis is spinning this. If he was spinning it there are better ways of doing it, and Doug is, if nothing else, a master of spin. Young Dave O's being very quiet at the moment,.isnt he? Havent heard from him since before Palace. Hopefully kicking some backsides on the training pitches.
Richard Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 ^^ not when it's the second time in two days and we maybe trying to attract other players. Especially when we were told in the summer that Boro and Everton wouldn't be competing with us in the league. IMO losing two players in two days to those clubs sends out a entirely the wrong message
ozvillafan Posted January 5, 2005 VT Supporter Posted January 5, 2005 Young Dave O's being very quiet at the moment,.isnt he? Havent heard from him since before Palace. Hopefully kicking some backsides on the training pitches. Nah. He's spending his time putting together a diabolical plot. Something along the lines of using the press during the transfer window to make Ellis the scapegoat for what are - truly - his own failings as a manager.
GarethRobinson Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 It also looks better for us, PR wise, if we are beaten by Middlesbrough in a straight transfer fight, than if we just withdraw 'because, erm, the manager suddenly doesnt like him'. I dont see how. This way, using smoke and mirrors we can all argue that in actual fact we are now saving the cash to buy.......plucks name out of thin air - Steed Malbranque' If we were to say we lost out to Middlesbrough - well, erm, thats twice in two days to two clubs that finished beneath us last year.........how can that look better PR wise than the above?
bigwheels Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 Here's a conspiracy theory: Faye was supposedly having a medical with Villa, he's been out for chunks of last season and this with injuries. What if ... he failed the medical???

ligs Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 Nah, DOL clearly reads this forum and saw that the majority didn't think it wise to buy Faye, so he withdrew. If we don't sign O'Brien either, I can't see any other possible reason

KSV Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 other targets? what happens if we sign noone. we will obviously know we got beaten again to a player.
