What is scarfgate? The viral topic getting Aston Villa fans talking

Aston Villa fans created something out of nothing yesterday when mocking Leicester City's 'lack of scarves'

Aston Villa might not be placed high up in the Premier League table - but in terms of trending topics, their fans succeeded in securing a top finish thanks to a viral #scarfgate campaign.

Newcomers to the topic may be a little confused - why are some of the Villa faithful talking about scarves? Why are they converting tradtional Holte End anthems to include mentions of the neck warmer?

The simple answer? It's a wind-up of enormous proportions.

The longer answer? It was a burst of positive humour in Villa's twitter-based fanbase that took over - if just for a night.

That doesn't really do it any justice though.

Villa fan Ty Bracey - a regular on BirminghamLive's Villa Podcast Claret & Blue - tracked the stats last night. The #scarfgate hashtag took over Birmingham, landed at number 3 in the list of the United Kingdom's trending topics and even broke the worldwide top 50.

Ahead of their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg with Villa following a 1-1 draw in the week, Leicester City announced that fans travelling to Villa Park for the match will be entitled to a free scarf.

However, it seems that the club have been denied the opportunity to leave the free scarves on the allocated away seats at Villa Park - so a collection for the items has been set up so that fans may claim a free scarf; almost a week ahead of the clash with Villa.

his prompted a reaction from Leicester fans on Twitter - who claimed that Aston Villa were 'desperate' and 'scared' ahead of the second leg, nothing that no other clubs had stopped the Foxes from handing out complimentary items.

As tradition, a number of Villa fans highlighted this - and made an extraordinary deal out of it.

A laugh was had and songs were made:

Tom Cowley: We took your free scarves, we took your free scarves, we’re Aston Villa, we took your free scarves.

Sam Flynn: Scarves scarves wherever you may be, we are the boys from the Holte are we and we’ll take your scarves wherever you may be and we’ll take your scarves, Leicester City!

Marky: I see scarves of blue, taken from you, claret seats too, in rows one and two, and I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

At one point, #scarfgate went head to head with The Voice, a prime-time talent show in terms of leading the United Kingdom's conversation.

After starting out as a traditional fan v fan wind-up ahead of a game, #scarfgate grew legs of its own as silly, funny thing, showcasing the power of social media, and the spontaenous - sometimes postive - power it can have.

It looks like Villa fans will now have to put thier money where their mouth is - and get the scarves out today against Manchester City.

Good humour by the Villa faithful!

Cute. They must feel embarrassed that you could only hear the villa fans for the entire game

It’s true though. There wasn’t a minute of that first leg that you couldn’t hear our fans.

They do seem to have a disproportionate amount of scarfs when compared to other teams. Never thought about until now but they love a scarf over there!

The sound of those clappers always come across as pathetic on TV. The roar of the crowd is infinitely better.
