  1. Oh I agree. I’m glad it looks like we are going to have back-to-back European football instead of having to wait 13 years. If West Ham can have 3 seasons in a row of Europe don’t see why we can’t. If we don’t qualify for the Champions League it won’t be because we had Europe. The trend this seasons seems to be we play better when we had a game mid-week funny enough. The fact we are in this position with Europe would make our achievement more impressive than Newcastles last season.
  2. As Newcastle finding out this season and what Carragher correctly highlighted in his article, repeated qualification for the Champions League is going to be difficult for clubs like us and Newcastle. Listened to a few podcasts and reading online prior to the Chelsea game there were people saying they would rather than win the FA Cup than the Europa Conference. Villa are just not in a position to pick and choose what trophy they can try and win. That argument didn’t last long though. Personally feel we can qualify for the Champions League and win the Europa Conference which would be excellent season. Will feel confident of top 5 if we win today.
  3. I’d rather finish 4th too but if 5th turns out to be Champions League then I don’t really mind. Spurs have all their key players coming back , no Europe distraction, look very good attacking wise and scoring late winners. I already feel like Wolves and Palace at home are going to probably be another 2 wins for them but I guess football doesn’t work like that so any points dropped there going to feel like a bonus for us. I feel just focusing on them will be annoying every week. Personally I am not sure their style of football is unsustainable but we just have to wait and see. Will definitely feel more comfortable if we beat Man Utd and create a bigger gap.
  4. Where did I say I was worried about a team 11 points behind us? I’m thinking more because it’s likely top 5 is going to be enough for Champions League. So I’m focusing on there being a big gap between us and 6th. I could just worry about Spurs but then I’d be getting really frustrated at them nicking a last minute winner.
  5. Guess Brighton are capable of beating Spurs but also losing 4-0 to Luton. Hard to predict them but I wouldn’t be surprised if Spurs do what they did against Brentford and score 3 in 10 minutes.
  6. Potential to be a good weekend for us in terms of top 5. Can’t see past Spurs beating Brighton, Arsenal need to beat West Ham tomorrow especially after Man City’s result earlier and I think Villa beat Man Utd. Could have a comfortable gap over 6th after this weekend.
  7. I’m usually cautious when it comes to predicting Villa but I’m going for 10 points here. Sheff Utd W - Think we will see a reaction from the Newcastle game. They’ve conceded 54 goals this season and just don’t keep clean sheets. We’ve struggled to score in past few games and genuinely think it will click tomorrow. Man Utd W - Last night summed these up. Away from home they are vulnerable and think after what happened at Old Trafford being so recent I think we will put it right at Villa Park. Looks like Pau Torres is back for this game too. Fulham D - Tricky one this. Not sure which Fulham turn up in games these days. Can be a good side on their day. We also have a poor record at Craven Cottage, I can see this being similar to the Bournemouth game. Forest W - Kinda game we should be winning. Expect them to defend in a low block but hoping by this point we’ve got a bit of confidence from the previous 3 games and should be a routine home win like this fixture last season.
  8. Barring injuries I don’t see him getting much game time. Think Ramsey/Rogers will both be vying for that left spot, Bailey and Diaby for the spot next to Watkins and the right seems to be Mcginn/Bailey/Cash. Even Buendia could make a return in a couple of months. So really his just back up to Watkins which has been reported recently. Don’t like being too quick to write off players but from what I’ve seen of him this season I’m not sure what his particularly good at. Not sure his good enough for a team challenging for top 4.
  9. After the Newcastle I was thinking there is a bit of pressure on this game. Don’t win here and that would be 1 win in 6 (I think). Looking at our record under Emery this season. Lost to Newcastle, Liverpool, Forest and Man Utd. The game after we beat Everton, Palace, Fulham and Burnley. Guess you could argue they were home games and this is away but the point is we usually win the game after a loss. Ideally Spurs lose away to Everton in the 12.30 kick off and we head into this game knowing a win would take us back into the top 4 and 3 points clear again. Not expecting an easy game as Sheff Utd are desperate for points but I fancy us to get the job done here. 2-1 Villa
  10. Does everybody expect Spurs to keep playing like this for the next 16 games? It was only 6/7 games ago Villa were creating lots of chances and scoring goals. Pretty confident Spurs will hit a 5/6 game spell where they struggle to score at some point like we are going through, obviously down to whether Villa can find their scoring boots. 16 games left. Still a lot of football left!
  11. Pre-match I was hoping after a month away and playing one of the leagues bigger teams the players would be up for it. Wasn’t expecting a repeat of last seasons performance but a tough 1-0 win however you could sense from the first minute it was going to be a bad night. The ideal time to play them would have probably been about a month ago when we were flying and they were struggling but the winter break has allowed them to have a rest and were coming into the game on the back of 2 away wins. Don’t think managers have managed to do a job on Emery twice yet so credit to Eddie Howe on his tactics and they fully deserved the win. Obviously the concern is performances of late, if we couldn’t be up for this game especially after the 5-1 loss we already suffered then makes you think when the next good performance is going to come. Be interesting to see how Emery changes it. Feels like a bit of pressure is on the Sheff Utd game. Gone from creating lots of chances and scoring regular to a team that’s struggling to score. Personally I think teams have managed to figure us out but hoping it’s just a slump.

    Lino Sousa

Could be wrong but looks like his going out on loan
  13. Feeling confident tonight. Don't expect a repeat of the last seasons fixture, think they will turn up and be difficult to beat but I'd like to think after the result there earlier in the season and it being the first home game in a month the players will put on a good performance tonight. Going for a 1-0 win.
  14. I'd say I'm the opposite. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season. Had to wait 14 years for a season like this - much prefer this to having to win 10 in a row in the Championship to get in the play offs/beat West Brom on pens/beat Derby or looking like a relegated side with 4 games to go. Was envious watching Newcastle last season, now it's happening to us this season. Who would have thought after the 5-1 loss there at the start of the season we could go 17 points clear of them?!
  15. Percy article said it was 7.5 million upfront - I'd imagine they want that figure close to £10 million.
  16. I'm thinking more the signings of Digne (plus big wages), Coutinho on a permanent (big wages also) and Dendoncker are coming back to bite us rather than Diaby.
  17. Interesting to see if that was final bid or if they are willing to go higher. Wouldn't be surprised if the club moved on.
  18. I've always had the impression that unless the club get Champions League then this summer was going to be one where the club would need to sell a key player for FFP (have thought this would be Douglas Luiz tbh) but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Ramsey in the summer. Selling Ramsey in January would be baffling to me and especially to Newcastle or Spurs. Bayern Munich I could probably see but again maybe the summer. Would normally dismiss this as just paper talk but I only think there's substance to it because of Ornstein. People will probably think it's just clickbait from Ornstein but I remember watching him on The Overlap and Gary Neville was adamant Pochettino wouldn't consider going to Villa and he defended the club/owners about how ambitious they were so it's not as if he'd like to put out some random clickbait stuff about Villa. I'm sure the club will send out a message of some description to Percy/Evens/Maher at some point this week.
  19. First bid was reported 8pm on the 18th. Second bid was around 9am 19th so the controlled media release doesn’t have any substance. Anyway, Emery clearly wants him and you’d like to think this deal gets wrapped up over the next few days.
  20. I guess after playing 19 or so Premier League games you get to a point where it’s difficult to surprise teams and with the amount of analysis out there it’s a lot easier for teams to figure you out. Obviously the challenge for Emery for the second half of the season is what tweaks tactically he can do to make us a bit more unpredictable. Be interesting to see how the Newcastle game goes, you’d like to think they will try and have a go at Villa Park which can play into our hands but then again I’m pretty sure they went to Stamford Bridge a few weeks ago and only had like 20% possession or something around that.
  21. Last year we had no mid week games and also teams didn’t really respect us that much. Definitely didn’t have the approach of Sheff Utd, Everton or Brentford last season for sure. Teams see Villa as a bit of scalp this season, last season they didn’t. Not sure why you are bringing up last season.
  22. Hopefully I’m wrong about this but I do get Grealish shin injury vibes with Torres. Feel like it could be a while before we see him again. Good thing we have kept Lenglet around though I do agree Torres is a level above.
  23. Feel like the expectations from some people are getting a bit unrealistic. People are correct in saying the last time we played well was probably the Man City game which feels like a long time ago but maybe that performance and also the amount of goals Villa were scoring previously was unsustainable? I always believe over 38 games it evens out and you finish where you deserve. We probably went through a patch where we over performed and now going through a patch where we are under performing. This is something that happens to every team. Watkins has always been a streaky striker since his been here and I don’t see any reason why that would change. His gone through patches without scoring several times for Villa this is nothing new. Next thing I expect to keep reading about soon is “we’d be in x position if we didn’t keep getting all these injuries” which again isn’t something I’m gonna buy into if we did fail to qualify for the Champions League. Spurs have been without a lot of their key players for a while and still managed to keep up the pace. Anyway, hopefully a game against at Villa Park for the first time in a month against Newcastle should get more positivity in this thread.

    Unai Emery

Was wondering how many posts it was gonna take in this thread to see somebody worrying about Emery/Liverpool. Emery made the mistake of going to Arsenal after Wenger - he for sure won’t even think about making the same mistake again even if Liverpool approached to speak to him. I think any top manager would avoid following Klopp there if I’m being honest. Liverpool will find replacing Klopp difficult.

    Jhon Durán

I get the impression Duran has possibly had his head turned by Chelsea interest and his agent is trying to push for a move so is working overtime to keep his name in the news. Unless Chelsea or anybody else offer silly, silly money then I hope we don't sell him. Trying to think when was the last time we had a young 20 year old striker and in a position to give him time to develop rather then needing him to be our main goal scorer week in week out. Couple of years time I can see him being a real good player. I can see why the club sold Archer in the summer rather than loaning him out and keeping Archer. We'd struggle to get 18.5 million for Archer from what I've seen from him this season so far for sure. That loan bid from West Ham last week was ridiculous/laughable.
