  1. I agree with all of this... I think Chelsea's spending inflated the hell out of the prices of some of our targets, but the fact that some reliable Spanish sources said we were prepared to activate Nico Williams's release clause and smash our transfer record shows we have money, we just won't overpay for value. Williams could turn into one of the best players in the world in a few years and maybe £45-50 million was seen as more of a sure thing vs overpaying £30 million on Moleiro or £60 million on Guendouzi. We were also apparently having discussions with Memphis Depay, but he ultimately chose to go to Atletico instead, which also shows that we're shopping for genuinely class players now and won't settle for bodies to fill the bench. A bit like Newcastle struggled to get any of their ambitious transfer targets last January, we'll have to wait for this summer to convince them of our ambition and trajectory up the table. Overall, it's disappointing not to see us pull the trigger on a few deals this January, but I'm even more excited for this summer and who we decide to go after, because the huge spending of the 19/20 season will be off the books for FFP calculations, potentially freeing up £200-300m for next season's transfer kitty alone.
  2. I'd rather sign no one than trash like Jack Fookin' Harrison...
  3. Dyche is a much better coach than people give him credit for. He played dull anti-football at Burnley because he had to with their shoestring budget, but hopefully he'll be given a bit more freedom to express himself with Everton in the Championship next season! So glad we got Emery and didn't go for Dyche this time around...
  4. Sarr would be a huge step backward... Surprising to see so many on here still wanting him after an extremely poor world cup and a mediocre season in the Championship. The lack of activity is probably due to the fact that we're going after specific Champions League quality players Emery wants for his system and/or will not be bullied into overpaying for our targets this window.
  5. Tiago Ilori... Didn't make a single appearance for us.
  6. This is what I think... He's perfect for Emery's system with the right back staying back defending most of the time.
  7. I think it's clear that we're either going after Champions League quality players or the best young talents in the world. Not going to settle for anything in between now.

    Jhon Durán

Everyone needs to remember a few things about Duran: MLS is in the middle of their offseason right now and he most likely isn't match fit MLS to the Premier League is like going from League 1 to the Prem, the pace is ridiculously fast and will take a while to adapt to He's only 19... If he doesn't come off the bench and start banging in goals like Haaland doesn't mean he's a flop It'll most likely take at least a full season under Emery and in England for him to get adjusted to the country, the style of football, and the pace of the Prem
  9. He seems like he personifies everything we don't want at Aston Villa. He clearly doesn't care about what happens on the pitch anymore and watching him show up to training in his gold plated Lambo in his Gucci glasses and Louis V purse to collect his paycheck will cause the squad to lose faith in the manager.
  10. KMitch EXCLUSIVE: Gregg Evans is Lyric! You heard it first here, folks!
  11. I thought he was... Basically 21 of their 23 man squad was included in this.
  12. Yeah, and they'll all be playing in the Championship together... As an American I've seen a lot of the three of them and the only one I rate is Tyler Adams. McKennie is McGinn with poorer passing, a worse work rate, and without the infectious personality. Would have been a good signing 2 years ago when we tried for him, but we're in the market for a much better player now under Emery.
  13. Correct. If Evans says we're after someone nobody else has reported we're after, I'd bet money against it. Such a disgrace to have this numpty be our club's Athletic reporter because their coverage for NBA/NFL is fantastic and worth every penny of the subscription cost.
  14. Short term memories around here... Naming players who cost peanuts and rarely played for us are hardly the worst deals... Best: Sam Johnstone - Very solid keeper for us in the Championship for 1.5 seasons Mings - Leadership/solidity at the back sparked our 10 game win streak and playoff campaign Abraham - Goal machine. Loved him here. Robbie Keane - Very short loan, but another goal machine and "proper man". Kyle Walker - Very very good for his short time here. Solidified his case to start for Spuds the following season. James Milner - Class Class Class Worst: Drinkwater - astronomical fee and paid a lot of wages. He was dreadful and played a lot during his spell. Hands down one of the worst I can remember Cleverly - Paid a big fee and ~40-50k/week in wages for a player completely anonymous in all but 3 of our games for us. Michael Bradley - 4 appearances total for a total of 100 minutes. Not sure if Houllier actually rated him or just signed him to show Petrov/Sidwell he didn't need them anymore. Had to have been a pretty big loan fee/wage for the time. There are a million cheap loans who rarely featured for us, if at all. Doesn't mean they're the worst... Andre Moreira Borja Baston Tiago Ilori Grant Holt Simon Dawkins Andy Marshall Gabor Kiraly
  15. I think the 2nd is huge exaggeration... Some are making the argument that with our form quietly picking up and the huge dumpster fire at Chelsea/Liverpool/Spurs right now that this season is a chance to "go for Europe" and we should be investing more now vs this summer. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to work like that. You can't spend every window like Chelsea is spending right now or eventually you'll start racking up fines and sanctions.
  16. They're going to panic buy a manager again...
  17. Was having a casual relationship with a "Jen C" and accidently texted a coworker who was another "Jen C" some late night booty call messages one night. Coworker Jen was a lesbian and found it hilarious, but it was still embarrassing at the time. Learned to make sure I have work colleagues who have the same name as someone in my personal life clearly listed in my phone as a different name.
  18. This is how I see us lining up if he signs for us.
  19. Who is making a ridiculous statement here? Of course he has only played a fraction of the time as he did under Smith, because Emery has only been here a grand total of 9 competitive matches so far... He played a lot in the 2nd half of the season after he arrived in January for Smith, but his long term injuries and the incredible form of JJ kept him out of the lineup in the following season until Smith got the sack. Never got a look in under Gerrard. Doesn't change the fact that he wasn't even a rotation option for Smith after JJ's explosive growth the summer after Sanson signed for the club.
  20. I honestly think we have offers out there to the 1st choice targets right now and we're waiting to hear back from them on their decisions. For example, Marcus Thuram still hasn't moved to another club yet even though he's been "close to signing" for half the clubs in Europe since the World Cup.
  21. I don't agree with the "no depth" argument... Guilbert wasn't even training with the first team squad - Wasn't even considered a part of the team, TBH Archer needed 1st team footy and minutes to continue his development. Honestly should have never stayed in the 1st team this season to begin with Sanson got more minutes under Emery than Smith and Gerrard combined but even still, he was never considered more than a fringe player Bednarak was a temporary stop gap until Diego Carlos returned to the squad... Barely played for us and Diego Carlos is due back to the 1st team next month, so Bednarak is no longer needed Ings is the only one which I think was not initially planned to be let go this January, but West Ham came in with a good offer and Ings himself asked to leave because he wanted to start more games. Emery decided to let him go and continue to try for someone like Thuram or Dembele this window as a replacement. Otherwise, we'll have to get creative with a loan until this summer when we can go for a striker who really improves us.

    Unai Emery

Keep in mind the current media narratives around the Premier League: Arsenal's Cinderella season where they seem to be running away with the League under Arteta's leadership Man City is struggling to keep up, even with the Haaland's unstoppable prowess in front of goal, because of "luxury players" like Grealish not pulling their weight Newcastle are flying high ahead of schedule with their new Oil money and Almiron's incredible form Man United seem to have turned a corner since they sent Ronaldo packing Levy is having yet another falling out with his manager at Spurs with Conte reportedly leaving at the end of the season because of lackluster form Liverpool and Chelsea are a dumpster fire right now, with Chelsea's new ownership throwing ridiculous money at any young wonderkid on Football Manager 23 Everton's fan revolt and Lampard's sacking this week, which was a long time coming West Ham's collapse after several seasons of "good" football under Moyes Honestly, compared to the drama surrounding the other clubs, we just aren't that newsworthy at the moment. Our good form is starting to look like it's more than a new manager bounce/honeymoon period, but nobody will take notice until we actually climb up into the top 7, IMO. Hell, nobody is talking about Brighton, who seem to be continuing their good form without Potter. What about Fulham and their incredible first half of the season? There is more "exciting" things to talk about than Villa right now. TBH, it's a good thing. The squad can keep their heads down and focus under Emery's guidance and hopefully we can slip into European contention quietly this spring.
  23. For once, I agree with you! hahaha I think this summer is where the rework will kick into high gear and we see some current starters being sold or dropped to the bench with replacements coming in ahead of them.
  24. This... VillaTalk cries every window about why we can't shift deadwood, but when we actually start doing it the complaints start about lack of depth. Glad to see Emery is being ruthless here with the team. Basically telling everyone if you want to go, go (Ings). If I don't think you're good enough to be a part of the team this season (Guilbert, Sanson, Bednarak, Nakamba, etc.) you're out the door as soon as an offer comes in, otherwise you'll continue to not play.
