Tim is classed as an under 21 player, homegrown under 21's don't need to be registered. Tim isn't classed as trained at Villa as he needs to be here more than 3 years. But he is homegrown as he has been trained in England.

Ings is a goal poacher, who used to put in a shift when out of possession, but hasn't got the legs anymore. He wasn't good enough for us. Watkins makes very good runs, but his run aren't all about getting into the box. He makes runs that create space and time for others. Watkins is far superior to both Ings and Archer at running in behind down the channels. Which is essential to how we play under Emery in regards to exploiting the transitions and hitting teams on the counter. Buendia thrives when opponents give him space and time. When opponents get close to him, he gets shut down. Newcastle at home last season he had all the time and space in the world. Once we pierced their high press, Buendia and Ramsey did a great job at moving into the spaces opened up by Newcastle committing bodies to their high press. He found Watkins time and again. The likes of Diaby and Bailey play either higher or wider than Buendia who likes drops off into space. Bailey and Diaby don't tend to drop off as they look to get into the channels, and in behind. Zaniolo however can do this. And he is a better player than Buendia. So next time we face an aggressive high press if Zaniolo is fit I'd expect him to play. Archer is a fine finisher and has a superior touch to both our current strikers, but his abilty to work the channels, hold the ball up, and link things up is inferior. If we look to control possession in the opposition half tiki taka style Archer could've been useful. But he would still need to learn how to play in that style of team.

But he may need a rest. 135 minutes of football in a week is very good but do we want to give him another 90 3 days later?

That's probably the hardest place to go in the league. So I'm not going to jump conclusions, and sometimes teams can have off days. Also Luiz for example was playing his fifth match in two weeks. Him, Kamara and McGinn have all have a lot of minutes in the Last 2 weeks.

I agree that there was a lack of desire to go out and compete. To me it looked like the turned up on the field and thought they could and coast to a result like they did in the previous 4 games. Only Luiz, Digne and Konsa looked to get at Liverpool. The rest lacked impetus. Zaniolo and Tielemens had that when they came on.

Any news on how long he may be out for? He's so important to us right now.

It is offside, but that was hit too cleanly, Emi isn't saving that! So I'm not going to get salty over it!

So very poor performance, on a number of levels. But we shouldn't let this dampen our enthusiasm, temper it a little maybe, that is all. Firstly I have to address the defense. We were awful in defence. But I did see this coming, it wasn't a surprise to me. I said it after Newcastle away that we now have to build a new defense. Mings injury wasn't a simple replace A with B and we're all good. We lost our organiser and the real leader if the team. In Pau Torres we have a new signing that (as we have seen) needs time to adapt his game to the premier league. He doesn't speak English, so communication and organisation becomes a problem. We brought Carlos in as a Spanish speaker to help with that (but he got injured and went off), but even then those two still have to form a partnership. In a nutshell this new defense is in it's infantile stages and needs time and matches to grow. I voiced my concern after the Burnley win that the new defense hasn't been tested yet and Liverpool would be the real test, they were and it was a failure. We need to be patient with the defenders and in particular Pau, as he will need at least half a season before he truly starts to get comfortable. The other issues were leadership and the midfield. There wasn't anyone on that pitch that could get the team going. McGinn leads by example, so does Luiz (I believe he is a real leader in this team). McGinn was invisible for periods and definitely didn't lead by example. Kamara was all over the shop. Luiz did his best, but his fellow midfielders did little to help. We struggled to play out, particularly in the first half. And we struggled to get out of our own half when we did find a way past their high press. Now the positives. Because there were a couple. Tielemens and Zaniolo came on are really competed, showed the determination and aggression needed to compete against a team like Liverpool. Tielemens may very well get a start ahead of Kamara in our next match. Zaniolo proved what I already thought, his movement, strength, and ability to link things makes him a perfect fit to play off Watkins. Classy player, we must nurture him carefully to keep fit and healthy. He is a next level player! He also has the aura of a leader. Finally in all that patheticness we created chances. We are far more dangerous in attack compared to last season.

But Lenglet has only had one training session, and Pau needs games to get up to speed. We have the international break now, not sure if it's good for us or not!

I said it after the Burnley game, that the defense is still bedding in, and Liverpool would be the real test. Unfortunately we have failed miserably!

True. Feel for Bailey here, he has actually created a couple of chances. He has had little to work with, but done okay. Can't believe McGinn is still on the pitch.

Bailey has been lively. The problem is we're struggling to get the ball out of defense. When we do the central midfield are struggling to get out of our half.

McGinn, and Kamara are struggling out there. Pau is clearly struggling with the pace of this league, and Liverpool's high press is terrifying him.

How this guy isn't in the Brazil squad I don't know? He is every bit as good as Bruno, better than Paquetta, I just don't understand it!

Watkins has one real weakness. His touch is average at best. The finishing thing is overblown. Every striker misses chances. Ollie isn't especially profligate. 1 goal in 3 chances is considered a good finisher, Ollie isn't far off that.
