  1. A thesaurus doesn't give you a definition, it gives you synonyms.
  2. I'll offer another theory. They couldn't give the tiniest toss about a statue of Churchill. So they don't bother about defending it from a bunch of largely white Socialist Worker sellers each May. If they can use it as an excuse to try and fight black people though, then they'll be there in a flash.
  3. Maybe. But your original excuse for these people was "how could anybody think people would just sit and watch a Churchill Statue ... getting vandalised?". They do every year.
  4. There have been anti-capitalist protests every May Day in London for decades. That statue gets graffitied at pretty much every one of them. What's different about last Saturday that means that these dickbags come out in force now, but had kept them away for every May Day protest?
  5. Last week was a minority of bell-ends. Nobody in today's faction turned up for a peaceful reason. They all came prepared to fight.
  6. Personally I think it's nice that so many regional branches of the Conservative Party were able to go to their meeting in London today. Probably makes a nice change to do racism in different surroundings.
  7. Basically, what Stevo said. "If you abide the law (sic) they will let you go" is quite clearly not always the case, however much it might be true in your thankfully, limited experience.
  8. I expect that will be a big comfort to Dalian Atkinson.
  9. In the (possibly naive) assumption you're asking in good faith and not just trying to square up for a fight, I'm not all that stressed about it either way. Is it a Taliban-style cultural aberration that an episode of Fawlty Towers is taken down for a couple of days while a 15 second bit, mocking Major Gowen's racism while he talks about the difference between n*****s and w**s is removed? Not really. Would I really be that bothered if that change didn't happen and I, or my young children saw it in the original form? Not in the least. There's enough real stuff going on to not bother digging a trench over this.
  10. The international broadcast rights have recently changed, meaning it's been removed from YouTube. And is still available to watch everywhere that has the right to show it. Keep those culture war fires burning though.
  11. Funnily enough, I do have a black friend who literally said "I am happy to finally have white people along on the march and it shows some progress is finally being made". Verbatim. Happy to help.

    U.S. Politics

The Lib Dem fight back starts in Washington State. Get Ed Davey out there now.
  13. Not sure that's going to make much difference to the spread.
  14. What else "captured peoples attention" during the 24 hours around the time that lockdown was announced? Which is when this event occurred. It just seems a bit weirdly hubristic to go with "this widely reported thing happened, but it's somebody else's fault that I didn't know about it"
  15. It was big news. It was in all the papers. It was on every news website. It just wasn't as big news as a global pandemic and an unprecedented national lockdown which was announced at the same time that the murder was being reported on. It's not a conspiracy that people paid more attention to the pandemic stuff.
  16. Farage being potted* from his LBC show. One fewer ugly racist on the airwaves. *or rather, not having his contract renewed
  17. Has it really been kept that quiet? The original report: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-51999370 Her mother's comments a few days later: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-manchester-52040433 A report that a memorial garden is being established: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-manchester-52222752 A report that a suspect has been charged with the murder: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-manchester-52739911 And at that point, surely reporting restrictions kick in? If they were trying to keep it quiet, they've not done the best job. Besides, there has been quite a lot of "other news" around the same time which is going to take up peoples' capacity.
  18. We should probably disband the Scout movement and burn all the uniforms just to be on the safe side.
  19. One might even say then the debate that these incidents are creating is a positive, educational thing, no?
  20. Twelve weeks ago. So that's gone well.
  21. Well, what's your concern? What's the worst-case scenario that you're worried about?
  22. Well, yes. That's how time works. Places that haven't changed over time? Even Pompeii and Herculaneum have a gift shop and modern toilets. Nobody is suggesting "erasing history". I would suggest that the following two points are pretty much inarguable: (1) More people have learned more about Edward Colston and his position in British history in the last week than they would have for the next hundred years had his statue been ignored last week. (2) when he is fished out of the harbour and stuck in a museum he, and his story will attract for more interest than he ever did when he was standing outside the Radisson car park. It's not erasing history, it's highlighting it.
  23. I expect that his choice of sleeping arrangements might be seen as a bit problematic today as well.
