  1. In his book Black Jacobins, C L R James notes that this is the way it is reported by white historians. Yes, Britain had a lot of truly moral people active in trying to abolish slavery and we should be rightly be very proud of them. It was passed in law mainly because it would cause massive economic damage to the French war effort. Without that, it is doubtful we would have abolished it so early. Maybe in time. Great book by the way. The big philosophical dilemma of a newly revolutionised France claiming all men are equal...except for slaves in Haiti and other colonies.
  2. I know what you mean, it does distract, it was the use of the word "mob" that raised my eyebrows. I'm being too sensitive. As you've already said some of the Little Britain sketches were blatantly anti-bigot. The blackface thing I would say is a no-no whatever the message they are trying to put across. I hope the rumour about Django Unchained is just that, a rumour. One of the reasons Tarantino made it was because of the bullshit Civil War movies and movies set in that period. Kind slave owners and the tragedy of brother fighting brother...
  3. The mob? The grievances are very real.
  4. You won't be surprised to hear that the character Inspector Lohmann is based on Berlin detective Ernst Gennat who was a pioneer of profiling and coined the phrase "serial killer". A fictionalised version of Gennat appears in season 2 and 3 of Babylon Berlin, itself and excellent TV series.
  5. This must be the only time of year that all men suddenly develop an eye for colour, style and design!
  6. I was thinking along these lines until I read that they didn't bother with a forensic expert for the defence. I suppose the burden is on the prosecution, but it may have been a risk they didn't want to take.
  7. Maybe the players are getting scared of making mistakes?
  8. 1. Is it? 2. Don't understand 3. true 4. Utter rubbish 5. Very true Stupid thing for the police to do.
  9. The embarrassed Lib Dem ministers should show some balls and cross the floor to the opposition.
  10. When I go to wash my mug at work getting stuck behind the only bastard who washes his mug properly. Then dries it.
  11. People are upset about missing out on the biggest show on earth. Bringing football back to the country that invented after a long overdue absence. Missing out despite being the best most equipped nation in the running. The fact we were (possibly) deemed the weakest goes to show that there are a lot more factors at play here than meet the eye. As some journo said the other day, England do it all wrong, they try to make a footballing bid, rather than a FIFA bid.
  12. I'm having one of those "should have put money on moments"....
  13. Russia - more money for bribes and building stadia. Qatar - the Sheikhs will take their money home if not given it. Edit: and both won't give a damn about tax and worker's rights.
  14. There is no way i'm not wearing a shirt and walking around like Michael **** Douglas in just a V-neck jumper.
  15. My problem is a little bit of torture may lead to a bit more torture and then escalate into more common usage rather than just anti-terrorism. It's opening Pandora's Box.
  16. "Countdown" is on in a minute. They'll soon stop.
  17. Benefits Claimants Public Sector Tube Workers Firemen the ever present Immigrants Students The list is building of people for the powers that be to point a figure at.
  18. Old link, but interesting. The writer has a familiar name too. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/16/AR2007051602395.html
  19. "Families with Ccildren the biggest losers" gets the biggest laugh from me. Labour, Conservative, whatever political party, this is often one of the core things they fight over.
  20. Why should the state be the parent? Isn’t this the problem that the state is being asked to provide beyond what it should provide? Its unsustainable. And whilst some may be spoiled under a Labour government, I wouldn’t say the vast majority were, nor under a Tory government are the majority abused. Its a simplification that doesn’t add up. Simplification, yes. But, the poorest have been abused in the latest spending cuts. If you're happy with that, say so and defend it.
  21. You're ex-military, am I right? I'm from a military family too, so it was part of life to be uprooted every three years, or have Dad away from home for months at a time. When I see people getting upset about having to move to another town or city, I think "why?", but then some people would find it very disruptive if they are not used to it. Shaun Maloney did!
  22. I've said elsewhere, the State is like a parent. Labour are an over-indulgent parent spoiling the child. Conservatives are an abusive, nasty parent.
  23. Three beans, plus one bean equals? Some beans.
