BOF Posted May 21, 2007 Moderator Share Posted May 21, 2007 V111AFC, I wouldn't be happy with that strikeforce. Neither of them are proven in the Premiership, never mind proven in the upper reaches of it. I would be happy with Young, Sneijder and Gordon though. o'malley
I am very sceptical about scottish league players, i hope we dont sign any more of them, unless it is gordon or boruc.but some great players do have spells in scotland. think gattuso, arteta, larsson, viduka. maloney's looked promising and petrov - while not always convincing - definitely has potential to do very well. so i don't think players should be automatically written off because they come from scotland. Rocafella
I want MON to sign a real set-piece specialist. We have Petrov and Barry who can cross in a decent corner and Petrov is OK at FK's from reasonable distance. We also have Maloney who scored our first free-kick in a long while but other than that it's pretty thin. Also I don't really rate Maloney as a starter, more like a joker sub. Young has not convinced me either, although his swingers from the side have been OK. From shooting distance he hasn't been anywhere near

BOF Posted May 21, 2007 Moderator Share Posted May 21, 2007 I don't really rate Maloney as a starter, more like a joker sub. I know exactly what you are saying and I agree with it at the moment. However I think given time he could be our Joe Cole. Joe Cole was the joker sub with no specific role for a long time in his career and now he's a starter for Chelsea (when fit). I think Maloney could be brilliant in our starting 11 in the not too distant future. Just remember that not all of our signings are the finished article quite yet. lazarus_chin
F365 is linking us with Fenerbahce's midfielder Stephen Appiah. He is the captain of the Ghanaian national team and was voted one of the top 10 all stars of the 2004 olympic football tournament.Impressive list of achievements including helping Juventus to a Serie A title.Definitely in the "world class" category.Hope this isn't just a rumour. If we pulled this off I think it would be one of the signings of the summer. Awesome player who is rated as high as Essian in his homeland. Now thats saying something. Richard
I thought he was older than 27. Mind you considering the amount of times he has played in Champs League, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he wanted that :winkold:
BOF Posted May 21, 2007 Moderator Share Posted May 21, 2007 Appiah has been a favourite nomination in this thread for a while. I see him as a very raw midfielder - very willing to run all day, cover every blade of grass (and I do mean every single blade) but has a tendency to look like a headless chicken at times. For Ghana he is 'bailed out' by having the simply awesome Michael Essien beside him to steady the ship and be Mr. Sensible. Provided he wouldn't cost a fortune I wouldn't mind us getting him, but I don't see him as being the difference between Europe and midtable. I don't think he's that good, but I could be wrong. Amo69
Its the most exciting name we've been linked to so far though. Pure powerhouse players like Appiah are suited to the premiership. I'm picturing him in the Defensive midfield type of role that sits behind the defence. Is this where he plays or is he more an attacking midfielder? Edwardius
Sneijder is almost a certain to go to Valencia, so you can probably write him off now.
NeilS
Another consideration with Appiah is that he'll be missing for quite a few weeks in the new year for the African Nations Cup. Which isn't a problem if you've got plenty of top quality cover, but can still be disruptive to even the best squads. For example: Chelsea will be missing Essien and Drogba in January and they're two big players to replace.
jellycopter
Sign Appiah up! Even if only for the fact that he goes mental when he scores...! http://youtube.com/watch?v=wH1KmlWNJh8

lazarus_chin
If we sign sneijder and appiah i'd be delighted. We seem to be always linked to kallstrom.Graham taylor was reportedly interested in him when he was manager.Kallstrom,Appiah, and Sneijder would make our midlfield top 6 quality at least. I disagree big style, Appiah is a class act and very competative, much like Gattuso, just because he races around the pitch doesn't make him a "headless chicken", the likes of Juventus don't invest in such players, imo he is a world class player and he was one of the stars for Ghana at the world cup, it was a two way thing between Essien and Appiah for me, they both dominated games, Appiah is simply an all round class player who can create and score a cracker at one end, and then save us at the back, i'd compare him to a Boateng type player who is also good going forward and i hope Mon moves heaven and earth to get him as he'd be worth every penny, a player who can easliy beat the likes of Gerrard, Lampard and Fabreges in a midfield battle.
