My view on the Bellend would depend first and foremost on whether he is capable of scoring lots of goals (which I sincerely doubt) and whether he can stay out of trouble off the pitch (which is more likely).

he would cost 7 million max

remember they will want rid of him, as they are looking for bigger and better things as they have money to throw around

it's not like hes vital to them and it would only take a big bid to prize him away

surely if our stated aim is top 4 within 4 seasons then he is not good enough for us

would find buying Bellamy a tough one ....

hopefully we will be in a position to improve on him the following season

if each season we continuosuly buy a better standard of player, we can only improve

Benitez must have thought he was good enough for his top 4 club last summer. But it appears that Bellamy isn't happy with the squad rotation policy up there.

To be honest, he probably isn't good enough to be a regular starter for a top 4 club but we sure as hell ain't gonna attract anyone of that calibre right now. Bellamy would be a good "stepping-stone" player as we try and improve as a club to one day be able to attract the world class players we all crave.

**** Bellamy, give us Robbie Keane - younger and better, 8 goals in the last 5 games, a natural leader and superbly behaved off the pitch.

The fact that Keane has scored 14 in his last 12 doesn't bode well for us getting a good deal on him, the frozen out Defoe on the other hand could be a bargain who may well be available for the right price.

VILLA TARGET CRAIG

EXCLUSIVE O'Neill poised to tempt Liverpool with £8m bid for striker Bellamy

MARTIN O'Neill will splash £12.5million on Craig Bellamy and Artur Boruc this summer as he continues rebuilding at Aston Villa.

O'Neill has won the race for Bellamy, who could finish the season with a Champions League medal but will still be sold by Liverpool for £8m.

Mark Hughes would love to take him back to Blackburn, having been forced to sell him for £6m last summer due to a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for that figure.

But Rovers are way behind their Midlands rivals in terms of how much they can offer the Welshman in wages. By moving to Villa Park and working again with the manager who took him on loan from Newcastle to Celtic, Bellamy will keep his current £60,000-a-week salary rather than take a pay cut by returning to Ewood Park.

What is more, Bellamy credits O'Neill for revitalising his career after his troubles with Graeme Souness at St James' and is privately delighted at the prospect of playing under him again.

O'Neill, meanwhile, will go back to his old club for Boruc, the Polish goalkeeper he has identified as the man to replace Thomas Sorensen next season. He is confident that a £4.5m offer will land the 27-year-old.
