Van Gaal has been appointed as the new Netherlands manager

Louis van Gaal has been appointed as coach of the Netherlands for the second time on a two-year contract to replace Bert van Marwijk.

Following the dismal performance at Euro 2012, where the Dutch lost all three group games, Van Marwijk left his position just two years after leading the Oranje to the World Cup final.

The Dutch football federation (KNVB) has now turned to Van Gaal to preside over Holland's bid to qualify for the next World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

The 60-year-old's previous stint as national team coach ended a decade ago when Van Gaal failed to take Holland to the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

He has been out of coaching since leaving Bayern Munich in 2011 and he was mooted as a contender for the Liverpool managerial position before Brendan Rodgers' appointment.

Van Gaal has also coached Ajax, Barcelona and AZ Alkmaar, and he is looking forward to a second stab at the Dutch helm.

"I am pleased that the KNVB has approached me," Van Gaal told the federation's official website. "This is the challenge that I was waiting for."

KNVB director Bert van Oostveen said: "We were looking for a coach with a wealth of experience, with personal and technical expertise.

"Van Gaal has a proven track record both nationally and internationally, and we know he is a dedicated and very passionate coach."

Well I hope he's more successful this time around :? I'm still pleased though.

Van Gaal...

A marmite manager. How when you had players like Van Nistelrooy, Kluivert, Stam, Overmars, De Boer brothers, Van Der Saar, Cocu and co do you fail to qualify for the world cup in 2002. How is that even possible? But he has had success in different countries. Also and I think this is the main reason for his appointment, he does not take shit. He is a no nonsense manager and he will kick any bitches out.

I love Van Gaal though he did cost Holland in 2002 world cup vs Ireland by taking off Overmars after his comments before that world would prefer holland in world cup than ireland :D

Seems like a move backward...I also think he's the kind of manager that is not good for dressing room harmony, and the Netherlands have often lacked that. I think they should have picked a younger, more positive-minded manager.

On the other hand he is the kind of man who won't take any crap from players or journalists, he'll flatten egos and put them in their places.

He has to find some new talent to replace the current ones though, I doubt the likes of Robben and RVP will be playing at the same level come 2014, and Afellay looks to me to be really overrated (granted I've virtually never watched him :D )

really? RVP will be 31 and Robben 30(dont let his old man looks fool you with his age :P)

I hope they continue to play well, fantastic players, I particularly enjoy watching Robben play :)

Wingers tend to fade earlier than other players as they rely so much on pace which is often the first to go as one ages, which is why even though Robben will be only 30/31 by then I think it's more than likely than he will have faded by then.

I can't think of many creative attackers who have played at the very top level who were still at their best at 31. Forlan off the top of my head, but he's a bit of a late developer (like Drogba). The likes of Henry, Kaka (who's still only 30), F. Ronaldo, Robert **** Pires etc etc were all past their best in their early 30's, even though they still remained decent players.

I had the pleasure of attending a game at the World Cup 2002. I saw France v Uruguay live in Busan, with Henry sent off early in the game and no goals, France stayed in the same hotel as I did. They weren't happy campers. A week later or so I watched Russia-Japan on a big screen in Osaka.

I'll never forgive Louis van Gaal for screwing up Holland's attendance for that tournament.
