Richard - all these players have been on our bench, and would (will) be needed if we get one more injury in midfield, wing etc.

HArdly John

Hendrie has been on loan all season and has not figured even though he has been back with us for two weeks

Agathe hasn't been on the bench since his last appearance and has been described as anything between "Total crap" and "very substandard"

Whittingham similarly to Agathe and Hendrie. Cant remember the last time he was consistently on the bench

As for Djemba, he has figured for the last 10 minutes of the first game against Arsenal and thats it

Sorry but these are hardly even squad players

In which case, O'Neill is wrong in saying that our squad isn't big enough then?

Do you think they are sitting around hoping the phone rings, given our situation and their experience?

Yes

Well in that case, I'll be expecting Randy Out protests, and Anti-MON banners on Saturday?

If you ask silly questions..... :D

No John, the squad isn't big enough, but it wasn't big enough even before those guys left. The point is that they didn't even sit on the bench meaning them leaving hasn't actually affected the 'active' squad size, which is still too small and has been since MON took over.

Thanks Brian, got there before me.

In addition I think MON is very much refering to the quality pool of the squad with his comments, but far be it for me to put words in his mouth

As Brian has said, those players haven't even featured when we have had an i njury situation, says a lot about their quality. WHich in turn suggests that they are no big loss to us.

Someone obviously tracked Mark Delaney down in the treatment room again cuz he's havin' a waffle.

Mark Delaney expects 'big name' arrivals at the club following links with Shaun Wright-Phillips, Ashley Young and Craig Bellamy.

The Wales defender, who is about to fly to the USA for a consultation with world-renowned knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman in Colorado, believes Martin O'Neill's impact means 'things are looking very positive for the future'.

Delaney said: "We've been linked with Shaun Wright-Phillips, Ashley Young and Craig Bellamy and it sends out the right signals that this club is going in the right direction.

"There's no doubt about it, there will be some big names at Villa soon and people shouldn't be surprised by the sort of profile we will attract."

Delaney also told the Express and Star: "The manager has only been here a short time, but from what I've seen things are looking very positive for the future."

In which case, if no players were brought in then it'd be acceptable to you?

Just so you know where I stand - it'd be acceptable to me, as long as there were no complaints from the management of having a small squad or one that lacked quality or talking about spending in the future to help out current players as he has been before January.

Are things that black and white?

But as you arew looking for a black and white answer from me to pin something to here goes.

If we failed to make a bid for another player between now and the end of January I would be upset

If we failed to sign another player between now and the end of January I would be concerned, of course.

As I have already told you, I'll wait until the end of the window before reviewing our transfer business and before reviewing it in comparison to our competitors

At that point it will be too late.

I understand completely where you are coming from Richard.

But as of this moment our piss poor small squad has no re-evnforcements.

As John says MON has been spouting stuff about getting help in etc which i truly think he thought he could. After a couple of weeks he has not and i think it is dawning on him that he might not. Hence the recent more downbeat remarks.

Time will tell i suppose.

We have no players - England u21 for sale 8m with 1.5m add ons if he's successful - stands out in a s**t team - i thinks its gotta be worth a gamble (if it dont work he is young and english so he'll retain a value either way!!!)

Problem is that England U21 does not mean he will have a bright future. He has had a half premiership season where he has been good, but we have seen this many times with many players before. I am not saying that he will be crap, but I just think its a gamble that is too big with the ridiculous prices that is quoted in the papers.

Remember that Whittingham has 15 U21 caps, compared with Young's 4. History is full of U21 players that failed and never became more than Championship material. History is also full of young kids that impress in their Premier League debut season, but soon fade away into the Championship.

For what? For me to have an opinion?

Look no matter what any of us think we cannot influence what's going on behind the scenes by spouting off now can we?

DeepDish - Of course it doesn't automatically mean he'll have a bright future but why assume that because there is a Peter Whittingham and a Carlton Cole in the world that Ashley Young will follow them. It's equally true to say that all full England internationals are at some point in their careers under-21 internationals and having seen him I would say that he is more likely to find his way into the full setup than to fall by the wayside. Put it this way, Whittingham & C.Cole were never being auctioned off for £9m and a £9.65m bid was never accepted for either of them.

I'm just not a fan of the "because someone failed with those circumstances before, we shouldn't risk this person". See Balaban & Collymore as examples of that.

I am not assuming that. But lets say there is a certain percentage chance that it is the case, then I believe that percentage should be discounted to the price.

Specially when we know there are so much talent available in the European transfer markets at affordable prices.
