Truth is, if he was the manager of a club who didn't have media smoke blown up their arse then he'd be slaughtered for the way they play. I actually believe Emery gets us to use the exact amount of energy per game required to compete in it, so that we can roll on to the next one. This was bizarre, and his response was really problematic "We'd play this way if we only had 5 men". Sometimes you have to manage games better, and he doesn't do that.
