  1. We mostly all know that Conor is limited to those wonderful left foot free kicks, the pity is that the manager chooses to put him back in against the most technically gifted and mobile midfield in the league. As soon as I see the team sheet I knew we were ****. Why would a manager do that? Maybe he’s trying to force the powers above that signings are vital this window?
  2. Reffing really gets to me. Aguero smashes Grealish to the floor, gets up and shoved him. No yellow card. ElGhazi gets a yellow because Fernandinho didn’t win a header.
  3. Which goals do you think the midfield and defence were terrible for? I’ve got them down for 4. Every goal, no challenge. Pathetic
  4. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for a GK to expect any one of four players to get a challenge of some sort in on a player who has run into the middle of the penalty area from wide on the right. Ditto the Aguero goal, nobody challenges. It’s been a pathetic midfield and defensive display, and I knew it would be when I saw the lineup. Manager has to accept a big part in this. I expect it to get worse 2nd half, a lot worse. And it won’t be the GKs fault.
  5. We never, I repeat never, look like getting anything in the games like this. Without serious signings in the next few weeks we’re down. Man City are good, but not as golden as we’re making them look. Ridiculous team selection today.
  6. This is going to be a cricket score. Pathetic.
  7. Don’t fool yourself. Foden is nowhere near the level Grealish is at. Grealish is now a proven Premier League performer, one of the very best. And Pep knows full well what Grealish could bring to that ManCity team, or any other.
  8. Conflicting reports on Piatek, this attached link alludes to Spurs being very, well, spursish! Levy looking to offer a pair of cast offs and packet of spaghetti. I’d still expect the player to opt for Spurs if they meet Milans price, but it’s obvious that he would play 2nd fiddle to Kane when fit. If he does opt for that, and to play in a Mourinho team that doesn’t play to his strengths, then fair enough. We have to have committed and driven players coming to us, determined to prove a point and make a statement.
  9. If it was a loan until end of season then I’d take him. Could suit our 3-6-1 5-4-1 better than our current options. It’s about surviving this season now and retaining Premier League status to continue our recovery. Ashley Young could absolutely help us this season.
  10. 2nd leg will be interesting, I think we have to do the same again. I Don’t think we can allow ourselves to get carried away and think that the home tie advantages us, and that the onus is on us to attack to win the game. Hopefully we’ve signed a player or two by then that is eligible to play, certainly a CF would be a big boost. Fingers crossed. A finisher and a bit of pace could change the complexion of the tie.
  11. Really good, solid display from Nyland last night. Two or three top saves that kept us in the tie. Not a single moment where he looked troubled. He’s earned the No.1 spot now, same as Jed earned it last season.
  12. What are our 2 biggest losses thus far? Is the 4-1 at VP to Leicester, and the 3-0 loss away at Watford? I remember the stand out players in those games were Ricardo for Leicester, and Sarr for Watford. Both right sided players who tore our left sided defensive player to pieces. Targett was that player in both games, and also the 3-1 reverse at VP to Southampton. We need a much better LB than what we currently have, but Targett is without doubt more culpable for goals conceded than Taylor. And he has cost us more goals than he has provided, there’s a balance to be had which he hasn’t found as yet.
  13. In our recent plight, I would have Taylor over Targett. I accept that Taylor is a near dead end in the attacking aspect, but he’s far more reliable defensively. And as things currently stand we need to be better defensively. It’s unfortunate that on the evidence thus far I’ve got Targett down as a bit of a bottler, a bit soft. We hope he, like others, improves during the season. But for now I prefer Taylor’s defensive mind over Targetts brittle mind. Horses for courses. Opinions and all.
  14. On what basis? Nyland had a good game, no mistakes. Why should he lose the shirt to a 37yr old deemed past his best many seasons ago?
  15. Ppl would do well to remember that it’s the beginning of January, we’re level with the leagues 2nd placed team in a cup semi final, we’ve just come out of a xmas schedule where we’ve lost 3 1st team regulars. We’re almost an entirely new team. Luiz is as the start of his Premier League career, he’s 21 and in a new country that is very different from what he’s used to, in a team that struggles. He’s doing alright given the circumstances. He will have games where mistakes are made, as will others. Remember Grealish getting robbed on the edge of his own box at Spurs. Let’s get some perspective. We were 12-1 with the bookies to win the game last night, that should tell ppl where we are. With one or two better forward players things can change a lot, it can create a little more time and space for CMs that make them look a different player. Nakamba & Luiz are new players under pressure in the worlds most competitive league, in arguably the most vital area of the modern game. Give them some breathing space.
  16. It’s absolutely confidence related. The goal also buys them a tad more time and space as Leicester push for a goal and lose a little discipline. We must be prepared for a physical test 2nd half, meet that challenge head on with desire and discipline. I’ve a sneaky feeling there’s a red card in one of those Leicester players if we can keep them scoreless for 15-20mins of 2nd half. Make no mistake, they think they should be beating us comfortably.
  17. Well played you Villa boys, a near perfect away performance so far. The opening 10mins aside, we’ve looked relatively sound. We took their sting and grew in confidence. Stay focused and disciplined for the 2nd half, they’re going to come out fast. Important for Taylor to stay defensively focused on Ricardo, who started to break free towards the end of the half. Up to that point Taylor done well cutting off the space and time that Ricardo needs. I knew Leicester would get frustrated if we done what we have just done. Couple of lapses that we got away with, but finished the half confident. Come on you Villa boys
  18. Delighted with that line up, it’s the best we can do with what we’ve got imo. If it’s ElGhazi as the front man then we get much more movement than we’re used to. Deanos gone all Pep
  19. Ooops........gotta give them foxes a chance
  20. Could we take a leaf out of Peps book and go into this without a recognised striker? Granted it’s almost certainly too late to go with it now, guess we have to hope that Kodjia raises his game for the night. ........................Nyland....................... .......Konsa......Mings......Hause........ Guilbert....................................Taylor ..........Luiz....Nakamba....Grealish...... .........................Kodjia.......................... No way I’m putting Targett in against Ricardo, his hamstring will go again or he’ll get a headache, I’m content to go with a bit more defensive solidity in Taylor with orders to defend his half as 1st priority. If we can keep compact and tight we could frustrate them. We’re massive underdogs for this, you can get 12-1 on a Villa win, almost 5-1 for the draw. If we can avoid bad luck then theres a chance for us, all the pressure tonight is on Leicester to win. The more we can frustrate the more the pressure grows. UTV
  21. Many here seem to be sold on Giroud, me not so much. Yes he’d be another body in the squad but he doesn’t really bring goals. I understand the argument some are making with regard to his International worth with France, but I think we need to balance that with the fact he was supported/surrounded by the likes of Mbappe & Griezmann. Top quality. We really don’t have goal scorers like that. So IF Giroud comes in then it needs to be in tandem with goal scoring inside forwards, as we don’t look like getting enough via ElGhazi or Trézéguet. Id love Mitrovic but we ain’t going to get him away from Fulham, unfortunately. I think we might end up with a Marega or Mateta, as others have mentioned here. Whatever will be, will be. We have to trust Dean Smith and associated men in suits to make the right calls.
  22. You do understand that the transfer planning has seismically changed over the last few hours with season ending injuries to two key 1st teamers, added to the near season ending injury to McGinn a couple weeks ago? Over a quarter of our starting 11 has been taken away in the space of 3-4games over a couple of weeks. Meetings have obviously taken place in weeks/months gone by regarding player recruitment, but nobody could have planned for what’s just happened. The fact a meeting is taking place later today would seem a positive thing to me, everybody recognising the severity of the situation. But we all have to remember that there are FFP rules, and we’re not playing with Monopoly money. Between Purslow, Smith, and the owners we all should have plenty of trust that they’ll do everything they can to advantage Aston Villa. They’ve earned that trust.
  23. We’ve been hit with a triple injury blow to regular 1st teamers, integral 1st teamers. We needed 2, maybe 3, signings before the injuries, so now we’ve been forced to do something more drastic this January window. I’d have GK as the least of the concerns at this moment, we absolutely have to get at least one CF, at least one CM, and a RWF. That’s our minimum need, and they’ve all got to be good enough to go straight into the team. I’d imagine the owners will recognise the requirement to spend heavily if the opportunities present themselves for the right players this window, we’re a Grealish injury away from a full blown injury crisis that would take us down. We simply have to try to cover that possibility, and that is what makes me believe that the owners will look at this situation pragmatically and get the cheque book out when required.
