  1. Not too sure about that. Emery made it very clear in pre-season that Villa would place more focus on the cup competitions to try and win a trophy! The squad was strengthened to do exactly that to be able to rotate without a drop in quality with a manager who has an exemplary record in Europe.
  2. High back line is the problem Tro. Like many others, I stated in pre-season it would bite Villa in the arse and it has.
  3. If you are going to play a weakened back line then you must make sure it gets plenty of protection particularly away against the direct competitor in the group stage. Unfortunately Villa’s midfield was non existent as a defensive force. Tielemans and McGinn are not defensive midfielders. Kamara’s form has dropped off significantly since he first arrived at the club and needs to be benched. Chambers isn’t a RB and got the run around while the central defensive partnership of Konsa and Lenglet were weak positionally and physically. I actually felt a bit sorry for Chambers as he is a CB all day who can fill in as a DM. Played in either position tonight would have given Villa a more stable physical edge. That was down to selection! Positives were few but I liked Zaniolo and Duran who have more than a bit about them to maybe push for a Premiership start. Other than that it was a rank poor performance from a team who thought just turning up would be enough to win the game.
  4. Both teams poor defensively but great going forward so 2-2 is about right so far. However, I’d like to see Villa hold onto the ball more particularly the two in front of the defence. Tielemans & Kamara have given Villa’s defence no protection at all.
  5. I thought Tielemans gave Villa a better balance in midfield when he played in pre-season along with Philogene. Its no surprise to me with those two not playing Villa haven’t looked as dynamic going forward. Buendia is also a loss but aside from that Villa have **** up the balance of the side. I’m not surprised Tielemans is unhappy and it was a mistake to sell Philogene.
  6. What is it about Luiz that makes most on here blind to the fact that whenever he plays against decent midfielders he almost always is second best! A vastly overrated player alongside the rest of Villa’s starting midfield! Anyway, back to the game. High line against Liverpool is absolute suicide as it was against Newcastle. The thing is I don’t feel Emery will change it. He was hated at Arsenal for it yet kept playing it with better players than Villa have. You simply cannot play such a high line against the top six. All have players that can play defence splitting passes to players with pace to burn. Couple that with playing a defender who has no pace and the turning speed of a tanker then you are setting up to be on the end of a hiding. Torres needs to play in a deep lying back four to get the best out of him. I watched Villa in pre-season. Philogene stood out an absolute mile for me. Quick, direct, hungry and aware of his defensive duties. Looked a real player. Rather than play him in the first game Villa ended up selling him. Why the Jesus give him plenty of playing time in pre-season where he excelled then drop him? No wonder he wanted away! Would have exposed that poor Liverpool back four today. A reality check then for those mentioning possible Champions League qualification and questioning why one or two of the Villa players were passed over for international selection. I also had a quiet chuckle to myself when I read on here posters congratulating the club on keeping Villa’s best players. Could it be that there was no interest in the likes of the much lauded Luiz, McGinn, Kamara and Watkins for a reason?
  7. Particularly when he keeps playing a high line against him. Said before the season started the high line would crucify Villa against the better teams.
  8. Because the Brazilian manager isn’t delusional.
  9. Doing quite well atm despite that and your Gollum has just won a European competition which Villa are now in.
  10. Jasper would be a good signing on a free. I’d feel more confident with him between the sticks than Olsen for cup games and Europe.
  11. Less than the original price quote of 50m. Good signing by Spurs. I wonder if Gnonto will get his move? Would be another good signing.
  12. Thanks for that mate. However, I haven’t really changed at all other than being more active in defending my opinion. I don’t mind my opinion being challenged. It’s a forum so you should expect it especially when it that opinion goes against the grain. Some of those comments were quite provocative though so I replied in kind while trying very hard not to breach any rules. I suppose it’s always going to be difficult for a visiting supporter (although I’m also a Villa fan) on any forum to be accepted so you have a choice of either being quiet when you disagree or, being more defensively vocal on site. I’ve recently chosen the latter due to taking exception to several comments but I’m sure you would accept that is part of human nature. I’m sorry if I have disappointed you by defending my opinion or having an opinion that differs from others on site but isn’t that what a forum is for?
  13. Don’t worry mate. Been taken over by the dark side for a few days but……https://tenor.com/en-GB/view/ill-be-back-sunglasses-terminator-arnold-schwarzenegger-gif-159160
  14. Yet posters on here are saying Lenglet is an ok signing when he was rubbish for Spurs. At least Origi scored goals at Liverpool and would fill in for Watkins in Europe.
  15. Origi now available on a loan deal. Could be the second striker Villa need?
