This is the age group you want playing though. It's the failure to bring them on further that hurts, and I think the FFA are largely to blame for this. I've been playing here in various leagues for nearly 20 years, and the one consistent thing has been a complete lack of organisation, plan, and most importantly money invested in the amateur leagues.
Colleague of mine was on the books of Brisbane Roar a few years back as an apprentice, but had to jack it in as the money was so terrible, he just couldn't afford to live. Then he had to stop playing in the top state league, as the money was virtually non-existent yet the training required meant he couldn't hold down a full time job.
You're right about the costs - I recently had to pay $500 for my 10 year old daughter to play in the girls U11 league!
