Watkins is not the finished article, his finishing still has a lot of work to do and can’t carry the whole season again by himself.Top 6 clubs have two very good strikers, that is what we are aspiring to do, and those strikers tend to have different qualities to help break down different opposition.

    The narrative they are spinning is the deal was agreed at the end of last season and Villa didn’t want to announce until they brought players in, so didn’t get bent over in transfer market, with clubs knowing they had £100m to spend. Personally believe it is bollocks, because it’s what some fans have been saying since the Buendia deal etc.

    The elephant in the room is will Arsenal cave to the pressure being applied by Villa? I don’t necessarily agree with the narrative that we have been given some encouragement by the players agent, I think we like the player and we’re going to see if we can get them to blink.

    While we agree on where we see him in a preferred role, not going to give up on his development as a permanent DM. He was good this morning for Brazil, Ecuador were pressing high up the pitch, he was communicating well with the CD’s and telling them where to pass. Haven’t seen that in his game at Villa yet, not the finished article.

    You missed the point that was being made, a few commented that Abraham wasn't worth 40m, I made the point made on the transfer fee for Watkins. I'm not going to get caught up in the personal opinions section of why we should or not buy anyone, that's for the manager.

    We pay £30 m for Championship striker unproven at PL, but £40 m for a proven 23 yo PL striker with Champions League experience is too expensive? The mind boggles…

    Thanks Nostradamus, remember a lot of supporters on this site bagging a few French players 6-7 years back, who ended up all being very good players in their own right. They just needed time and patience, not punchlines.

    Depends on what your interpretation of top level is? We spent £22m on Wesley and £30 on Watkins, there was a reason behind Watkins signing obviously, but you can’t completely rule out the club going again with Abraham possibly being available, with the club maybe already making a decision on Wesley. IMO you need two very good strikers to compete for that starters position, if your going to be a top 6 club.

    You may be right. But ‘IF’ the club is interested, you can’t completely rule out the project, Jack, Buendia etc turning his head. He spent a season at the club, it’s like a second home.

    The kid has a lot of talent, whatever the initial fee, there will certainly be a lot of weighted add ons.

    I don’t believe he can demand anything from any team in the PL, especially in the Top half and I don’t read him with that type of personality. He will have something to prove, if Chelsea move him on and the challenge of the best player plays will be enough incentive. We also picked Arsenal’s pocket with Buendia, so won’t completely rule it out.

    The problem is both you and I don’t know that for certain. Personally do I think he suits Villa, No, not now, that ship has passed. But there’s no guarantees Watkins will take a step forward in his second season in the PL also. Watkins is far from the finished article, he needs competition to push him and we need a player on the bench who can change things up front when Watkins isn’t getting the goals. If we are serious about the Top 6 then it is needed. At the same point Smith got the best out of Abraham and maybe he stills sees the potential is there, so I won’t write the scenario off completely.

    You mean like he has done at Chelsea the past two seasons? He only played 90min approx 8 times in the PL last season, he would get more than that at Villa. You can throw comments out to suit a narrative, but he would get more football at Villa than he did last season at Chelsea.
