  8. Trouble is, that's his forte- heading away crosses, making last ditch challenges etc. You set the team up to play football, and Baker concedes possession too regularly, then gets caught for pace etc. (ditto Clark) Vlaar has far better distribution (as apparently does Okore). Baker is a capable player, though perhaps his overall game is not consistently good enough for this level. It also helps that the centre halves have an improving midfield ahead of them, as well as defensively capable full backs for a change. Let's not forget they've had the likes of Lowton/Bacuna/Luna/Bennett beside them recently. That can't inspire confidence.

  13. Is anyone else feeling as though this could bizarrely end up like a slightly worse version of Houllier's season?? Lose to Hull, Lambert sacked, Cowans for the last two games (as per Gary Mac), beat Citeh and Spuds (as per Arsenal and Liverpool in the last two games of that year) and somehow end up in a false position like twelfth? We can only dream. Having said that, I fully expect us to lose our last three and finish 17th, perhaps on goal difference. It will take a cock up of epic proportions to go down, of which Villa will play their part, yet it is possibly too much to ask for those teams to overtake us. Cardiff, Norwich and Fulham to go for me. Although games for Norwich and Cardiff against CL chasing Chelsea concern me somewhat. We have become the worst side in the division over the past few games, and I'm only glad that this Bodymoor bust up and Benteke's injury happened when they did and not two games sooner, else we'd be staring down the barrel right now.
  14. Surprisingly for the Mail, that was a decent, if sombre read.
  15. Forgive my ignorance. What makes him a prick? I'll admit I had my doubts about him previously. He did seem to know his game though, and alongside Neville is the most interesting pundit I've listened to in a while. I guess that doesn't always make someone an able coach..
  16. Didn't really mean it as a jab at Lambert. I just thought Lennon came across really well and that my opinion of him as a potential coach of whoever it might be in the future has radically changed. Lambert can be as uncommunicative as he likes, and I still back him and hope he can succeed- we'd do well to pull (with our budget) another European Cup winner as a player/Villa fan/manager who earned successive promotions with a team. I'm just starting to really doubt his ability as a modern tactician and motivator (much like O'Neill once things start going wrong). I hope he can pull through. I think Lennon, as someone that may be looking for a new challenge at some stage, would be a great appointment for someone, whoever that may be.
  17. Neil Lennon came across superbly on MOTD2 tonight. I'm always slightly suspicious of a manager's success at Celtic, because there is no challenge there. Seemed a really engaging, honest and intelligent bloke- a proper modern football thinker in the vein of Martinez/Rodgers. I'd back him to the hilt if he one day became Villa manager.
  18. I think this boils down to which club wrecked your childhood. In my case it was Man Ure. I think I still support their opposition as fervently as I do Villa. Liverpool are my second most hated, moreso than Chelski or Blouse. Yet any dislike for these teams disappears when they face Man Ure or have the opportunity to get one over them in some way. There is something about the passion for Liverpool FC from its fans which is equally irritating and admirable. I'm not sure whether the West Midlands has, or ever had that as an area, for any of its teams.
  19. Peter Schmeichel made me sick tonight on MOTD2. Always thought of him as a lousy pundit but tonight he took his ManUre bias to new levels. "Lallana deserves to play for a big club, a club like Manchester United. Good players should play for the big clubs". I hope Citeh tear them a new one.
  20. We'd probably only need to score two or three with Guzan in goal. It would most likely be Steer though. At least we don't have to worry about it this year.
  21. Vlaar Holt Benteke Westwood Weimann Reserves.. Lowton, Bacuna, Helenius, Albrighton, Bertrand? Never! Gabby, Sylla, Tonev, Steer.. and Bennett..and Luna..
  22. Matieu Berson and Jean Makoun gave two of the most accomplished midfield performances I've seen in recent times at Villa, yet only played a handful of games between them. Other than that, from my favourite era, Alan Wright, Tommy Johnson, and Ian Taylor (although he is a favourite crossover, and would be for many others). Guzan would have been the most underrated player of all time had he left at the start of last season. And my actual vote goes to Reo Coker. Allowed better footballers to play their game (ie Barry/Petrov), and poor passing was relative. God what I'd give for those three at their best now. I've never been more consistently furious with a player's non-inclusion. I think the game where we thumped Bolton 5-1 and looked terrific was followed by him being dropped, and being largely outplayed by Burnley. Petrov actually said to someone I know how much easier his job was when NRC was in the side and couldn't understand MoN's decision making. His choice of player favouritism over a functional unit was his downfall.
  23. You need to be a bit more precise with your predictions mate Rightyho Fulham snatched a last gasp against Aston Villa at Craven Cottage. It was Fulham who went ahead with their first attack as Kasami's fierce shot inside the near post from 25 yards beat Guzan. The visitors equalised in the 26th minute when Agbonlahor latched onto a Kozak flick, racing past Riether and bundling home via a deflection from the full back. And Villa found themselves ahead after 37 minutes, Agbonlahor slamming home from 12 yards out after a neat cut-back from Delph. Fulham pressed hard without much end product in an uninspired second half with Riise and Sidwell smashing wildly over when well positioned after corners were only half cleared. But Villa were to be denied a second three point haul in a few days, as Ruiz shattered their resolve with a headed winner after the 90-minute mark had ticked by. Guzan, Lowton, Baker, Clark, Bacuna, El Ahmadi, Westwood, Delph #90, Weimann (Sylla 80), Agbonlahor, Kozak (Benteke 64) I pretty much copy and pasted that but just changed the names, haha. Well if it happens call me Jesus. Edit: and it shows- headed equaliser
  24. Fulham 2-2 Aston Villa Kasami 6 Riether 26og Ruiz 90+2 Agbonlahor 37
  25. Guzan 7- Not sure he could've done much about either goal. Made a great save from Lukaku first half. Bacuna 8- Continues to look solid in this position, although I hope his future is further forward. Vlaar 8.5*- Very good on the ball for a centre half. Baker 8- Up and at it in the first half, unfortunately he was shifted left after Luna's injury. Luna 7.5- Good first half. Delph 8.5- Another good performance, terrific on the ball. He needs better support though. Westwood 6- I'm finding he isn't quick or brainy enough on the ball. Looked pedestrian against the likes of Barry and Osman, particularly after picking up a knock. Tonev 6.5- An odd move to remove him, just as he was growing into the game. Agbonlahor 4- Lacking confidence and sharpness, and another poor miss which cost us. Ended up dropping deep as the midfield went missing. Weimann 5- Endeavoured, but please play the guy in position or give him a rest. Benteke 4- Bad day at the office for the big man. Missed pen, another bad miss just afterwards. Not in the game and lacked fitness. Clark - I feel he was slow across for the opener Helenius - Twice got the ball (I think), both times doing something great, followed by something atrocious. Everton are a good side. If you don't take your chances they will most likely punish you, and that is what happened. I hope they finish above ManUre this year. I don't have too many complaints about the first half, but I thought Benteke's fitness and Luna's injury cost us a little. They have better players. Barry still has a lot to offer, and Westwood will have to do some improving to reach his level. I didn't think we had enough on the bench, and I didn't envy Lambert in that respect. Everton did.
