    Or looking at the same results another way, almost everyone around us dropped points, we are one point of second, three points off top, and through some good luck are still right in the mix. I reckon Newcastle fans would be thrilled to have blown it as badly as we have so far

    A team that is exceeding expectations in terms of their league position, and with the potential to go deep in two cup competitions, might decide that reinforcing the squad with one or two quality additions in January is prudent risk management. The sign of a good, well run team.

    If all we were playing for was the league position I think we’d be fine with what we have, more or less (still need a RB regardless). I think the Conference games have taken more out of the team than it had seemed previously and we’re just over tired and suffering for it now. If Emery wants to win the conference league and finish in the UCL places then we must have reinforcements in Jan - and probably throw the FA Cup as well. We cannot manage three competitions with this squad, imo just being in two is already taking its toll.

    Like all reasonable fans I want this guy to come good and be a key part of the team, but - within reason - I think we need to be a bit more ruthless as a club when it comes to recruitment. The question applied to every player should be ‘would they get into any of the squads that finished above us?’ If at the end of the season the answer is no, we either shouldn’t be looking to sign them permanently, or actively planning to upgrade them. I really hope Zaniolo makes the grade because I think he’s got it in him to be fantastic, he just needs to show us that in the next 19 games.

    I think Carlos is comfortably the least capable senior CB we have to play in the style of Emery’s system. He’s far too hands on with opposition players and struggles to sustain his concentration. Premier League level, but not top 4-6 level - and likely too expensive to shift on anywhere but to another PL team. Good cover for Konsa but no more than that.

    Bayern apparently looking to offload Kimmich, which would sort the defensive side of our midfield.. Back in the real world (for us), when Man City buy him I’d definitely take Phillips off their hands ‘if’ he gets real about wages - let’s face it no one is giving him a new contract replicating what he’s on now. RB the most most pressing issue though, and improves two positions in one by getting Konsa back into the middle.

    Not a huge fan. If we have to play Konsa at RB I’d rather see Lenglet and Pau at CB.

    Emery needed to make changes early on when we were crumbling and certain players contributing nothing. He let this game get away from us.
