El Zen
I'm a firm republican. The very principle of monarchy is against everything I believe in and what I think is right. I don't care one bit about the practical side to the question, and how "the royal family is a tourist attraction that generates income and a symbol that keeps the nation together". Not interested, monarchy and hereditary positions of power is wrong from A to Z and is one of the very few things left over from an age and a political system I sure as hell am happy not to have had to live in. ianrobo1
any system that meant someone has to change their religion to be married into it is corrupt and out of place in this world
bill
No head of state should be decided on birth. Every child born in a country should be able to aspire to the role. Anything else is tantamount to saying that their children are better than ours. In the 21st century a medieval system like this is an anachronism. As for the ridiculous argument about tourism...France has more tourists than Britain, and where are their royals  Just for a moment imagine that all history was forgotten and we were deciding how to appoint our head of state. Someone jumps up and states" I think my child should be head of state, and my family should hold the position forever. Your children can call us highnesses and we'll call you our subjects" Hmmmm...no thanks. Anyway as role models , this disfunctional, cold and rather odd German Greek family leave a lot to be desired. A referendum on the question could be held perhaps every 10 years. I'd be prepared to abide by the result. At least it would give them some legitimacy. But the British people, unlike our Antipodean cousins, have never been afforded the right to decide on the matter. I would like that right. desensitized43
Have never liked the royal family...mainly because i feel that the state has done nothing to help me...never picked up benefits of any kind in my life...nor do i qualify for any of them!! why should these people be allowed to live off other peoples taxes?? its a farce that in the 21st century an institution such of this still exists!...another thing i object to is the class system in general and the root of that is the royal family, get rid of them NOW! villal
I really think it would make no difference to how the vast majority of us live. I am no fan of the royals but what would the tabloids fill their pages with if they weren't around (apart from more tits! - hang on - off with their heads)?? ianrobo1
Bill, spot on, I can;t belive so called democrats onn this thread support the notion of the head of state only being there because of Birth and marriage and the 'subjects' have no say on this ... and of course the royals only marry those on the same social level as themselves

tonyh29
so why was Cromwell so great, he abolished the monarchy didn't he ? which is why I wrote "much as " he did a lot lot more than abolish the monarchy ..he created the commonwealth ensured English commercial greatness and his military achievements in the Civil Warensured the permanent defeat of monarchical absolutism and the survival of English parliamentary institutions there is of course more ... but not for this topic and also Tony, America has not done too bad with a president has it ? the world begs to differ otherwise
