Knight Riders into Villa Park

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Fulham defender Zat Knight for £3.5million.

Following three months of speculation that Martin O’Neill was trailing West Brom defender Curtis Davis, it appears he has given up on the youngster and completed the signing of the 6 foot 6 inches tall defender Zat Knight instead.

Much has been made of Knight’s allegiance to Villa in the past, and the 27 year old will be delighted to now be playing for the club whom he supports.

When Knight first broke through into the Fulham first team, having previously turned down an offer of a contract at Benfica, he was being dubbed as a future England center half. Whilst that claim did turn out to be true, Knight has only represented his country twice – both during an England tour of the USA.

He’s one of those players that seem to divide sets of fans – there appears to be a distinct split between Fulham fans to whether he is a liability or a genuine good addition to the team. He is coming into the squad to replace Liam Ridgewell, who left Villa in search of first team football when he moved to Birmingham City earlier this summer. With only three central defenders and two days of the transfer window left, O’Neill has had to act fast to ensure the squad does not have problems with injuries.

For a player of such height, Zat has a relatively small goal record, only scoring four goals in his career. His addition to the team also adds another ‘captain’ to the team, following the signing of Nigel Reo-Coker. Knight has captained Fulham and was even captain in his last game for Fulham, against Villa where he even scored an own goal for us to equalize the game.

VillaTalk welcome Zat to Villa Park and wish him all the best as he and the rest of the squad strive for success this year.

3 Premiership quality defenders at Villa. Something we've needed for a long time.

Although this signing does not improve the first team it's great to have a bit of decent cover at the back. Zat in, Ridge out - must surely be an improvement to the squad.

Welcome Zat and good luck.
