The summer window may have closed a week ago but that doesn't mean all the transfer business is done and dusted.
There are still plenty of players out there who are out of contract and weren't snapped up by a club ahead of the September 1 deadline.
These free agents can still move outside the window and may well slot in at a high-profile club still one or two players shy of being effective.
We take a look at some of those still on the market.

GOALKEEPER
Paul Robinson (35; last club: Blackburn Rovers)
The veteran goalkeeper offers the experience of nearly 500 Premier League and Championship matches as well as 41 caps for the England team.
Having been first choice when the club still played in the top-flight, Robinson found himself behind loanee Jason Steele in the Rovers pecking order last season and tried to leave in January.
He was finally released when his contract expired at the end of the season and still has a few years to offer.

DEFENDERS
Ron Vlaar (30; last club: Aston Villa)
The no-nonsense centre back was offered the chance to remain at Aston Villa following an injury-interrupted campaign but decided to seek his fortune elsewhere.
An integral part of the Holland team that finished third at the World Cup just a year ago, Vlaar would undoubtedly add steel to any back line if he can get a run of games.

Dwight Tiendalli (29; last club: Swansea City)
Swansea decided the Dutch full back was surplus to requirements on deadline day but he was unable to find a new club before the transfer window shut.
He had been at Swansea since 2012 without ever tying down a first-team place and spent the tail-end of last season on loan at Middlesbrough. 

Richard Dunne (35; last club: Queens Park Rangers) 
After a long Premier League career at Everton, Manchester City, Aston Villa and latterly Queens Park Rangers, Richard Dunne was released by the relegated club at the end of last season.
At 35, Dunne is right at the end of an impressive career which included 80 appearances on the international stage for the Republic of Ireland.
Even now though, he would surely strengthen a Championship side with his experience and leadership qualities at the back.

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD
Wilson Palacios (31; last club: Stoke City)
Things didn't really get off the ground for the Honduras international at Stoke City where, after four seasons of toil, he was released at the end of last season.
Having been a formidable defensive midfielder at Wigan and Tottenham, Palacios was inhibited by injuries while at the Britannia Stadium and found his appearances increasingly limited.

MIDFIELD
Kevin Nolan (33; last club: West Ham United)
The midfield workhorse and West Ham captain was released on August 27 following five seasons, 157 games and 31 goals but was surprisingly not snapped up by another club in the window.
The former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United player could still offer plenty of midfield bite, even at the age of 33.

Ezequiel Schelotto (26; last club: Inter Milan)
The winger's departure from Inter Milan back on August 31 was inevitable after just 12 Serie A appearances in two seasons and spells on loan at Sassuolo, Parma and Chievo in the recent past.
There had been hopes Argentina-born Schelotto would develop into an Italy regular after he was handed a debut against England back in 2012, but now the speedy player desperately needs a move to revive his career.

Yoann Gourcuff (29; last club: Lyon)
Once tipped to be the heir to Zinedine Zidane in the French national team, Gourcuff finds himself without a contract at the age of 29 following five injury-cursed years at Lyon.
Still more than capable of changing a game at his best, Gourcuff should have no shortage of suitors. Capped 31 times for France, he also has the experience of over 350 club games.

Ilsinho (29; last club: Shakhtar Donetsk)
The Brazilian winger left Shakhtar over the summer having struggled for game time last season.
It had been a very successful spell at the Ukrainian side for the pacy player, who won five leagues titles, three domestic cups and the UEFA Cup in 2009.

FORWARDS
Carlton Cole (31; last club: West Ham)
After being consigned to the bench for some time, Cole ended his long association with West Ham at the end of the season, saying upon departure that he wanted at least three more years at the highest level.
While Cole may never have matched the potential he showed in his early days at Chelsea, he would still offer plenty as a target man for a Premier League or Championship club.

Shola Ameobi (33; last club: Crystal Palace)
Ameobi is seeking one final move following a brief stay at Crystal Palace last season, where he made just four appearances.
It is for his 14 seasons at Newcastle United that Ameobi is best known and he scored 79 times in 397 games during that time.

I don't know about the foreign players there, but all of the home nations players would struggle to get games in a bottom-half Championship side now.

I wouldn't have any at Villa.

There is a part of me that thinks Palacios could still do a job. It just didn't work for him at Stoke.

Not here though. Championship level probably.

I think Gourcuff could do a job but he is injury prone and has a weak temperament that he probably couldnt handle Premier League. Would have took a punt on him last January but players we brought in since and Jack emerging I couldnt find a way for him into our squad

I hope Nolan doesn't go to a premier league club, he always seems to score against Villa
