Berger and the moving of gabby are taking the plaudits for yesterdays win. But for me the inclusion of Laursen was key.Not that I see laursen as a long term solution - but it demonstrates the need for an experienced centre back. What about a ridgewell - curtis davies swap. As it stands Bellamy looks the player most likley to join us, he is available, has worked with MON before - and I don't think there will be much competition for his signature. I hope not though - the guy is just bound to upset the applecart.

I just wonder - his best games were early season - and now - does he get bogged down on the winter pitches ? - His key ingredient is his pace - however his does seem particulary good at those one on ones - cool finishing under pressure.

I can't agree - you seem to suggest a squad is being built - but if the manager always picks the same 11 - what is the point ? - Moore, Ridgewell and Davis - look likley to leave in the summer - to be replaced by more Petrov's and Bardsleys ? Carew - yes a great player - but he was a signing of conveinence - Lyon came in for Baros - if they hadn't I don't think we would have got Carew.

I think MON will sort it - I remember graham taylor mk1 - going through a very similar scenario - the fans loved him, the press loved him, he was turning things round - but the reality was we were crap - we were getting beat regularly - we avoided relegation I think by a single point - and Taylor admitted he may have resigned had we gone down. - But the wake up call went out - GT shipped out the untouchables - and we kicked ass the next season. Nothing against Cahil - but you need experience at the back when on such a run - I don't think much of petrov - however having persisted this long - he may as well to the end of the season I really rate Carew - but much of value is negated unless he has someone alongside him -

Up until now I have always beleived that our inabilty to compete in the transfer market was the root cause of our problems. I never thought I would say this - but I don't think we can buy ourselves out of this one:- 1. I beleive wealready have defenders to provide a more solid back line than we are currently seeing 2. At 6-7m - Petrov has proved a massive error of judgement - and in pure stats Gabby is as good a front player as young at 8-9m ....what confidence then of our next venture into the transfer market. I beleive that MON, out the premier for six years - isn't re adpting that quickly .....lets hope he does ...but in the interim lets not start seeing what isn't there ................ie 16m investment for little or no retun.

one memory I will add to the above - if ever villa had a duff first half - you just knew the second half would be better - and it usaully was - all down to the half time rollicking. Wouldn't happen nowadays, players would be on the phone to there agents far to swiftly. One question I would love to ask him:- 'Ron, what do you think of the modern footballer who wears gloves, hairbands, ponytails and multi color boots' top bloke - side of 77 was good as well !

When you say a 20 a goal a season striker ....can we name names ? ....because there aren't that many out there......my guess is that we have to scramble for european football without one.....be that this season or next..with perhaps our front men all getting 12-15 each ......then perhaps we can find such a player .......but we have got to be talking £20m for a guy in his prime..I just wonder if it might be better to keep buying promising £5m-£7m forwards and hope one turns into the real deal....because I don't think you can buy them that easily...

A great signing in my opinion - do everyone reckon this is one of the stopgaps ? - or is he a first choice striker, given he has had a lot of moves in recent years. Just hope he setlles at Villa !

Agree with not being held to ransom ect..........BUT ......there seems to be a notion, that the players we are after will be cheaper in the summer .....and I just can't see it ! - theres another influx on TV money, - every club will be 'active' in the summer - where as some have admitted they aren't now. Part of being a good manager is the ability to get good players in.....whether the existing clubs want to sell or not. I know you can throw your hands up and say 'what can he do' - the current choice seems to be, 1.Pay over the odds 2.go for lesser players 3. Carry on with the current squad 3. Would be an extremley high risk category - so basically its the choice of lesser players - or paying more than we want. I think O neils trademark, is getting the very most out of decent players - so we could see him go for the lesser names.

Can you just go out and grab quality though ? - if we signed a few average players to boost our league position - ulimatley wouldn't we find easier to attract quality ?

Personally I think it needs a benchmark - for everyone to meaure againt. Say Young from Watford went for £5m, that would set the standard - bent could then be valued at £9m - on the other hand if young went for 7.5m - the value of Bent would be up to £12 - £13m. The fact that we bid for readings Doyle *May* suggest - that O Neils top targets - aren't available ....if this is the case expect a Nugent link before the end of the week !

Don't want to get into a squabble - agree that we need quality players - long term this will bring in the fans - but wouldn't be great to be in at the start of the story - rather than comin in half way through ? Just to confirm family enclosure tickets are still available £15 adults £5 kids - although judging by the the choice of seats - there wasn't an awful lot left - but that could be could I wanted 19 together !!! - See you there !
