  1. Didn't they finish 5th twice under Martin Jol just a couple of seasons prior?
  2. 6th? How do you figure? Worst case scenario we're 3 points behind 4th and 8 points (and far superior GD) ahead of 6th with games in hand played. Also why are this weekend's events any more significant than last weekend's, or next's? Does your outlook on the future change on a game to game basis?
  3. None of these bar Spurs at home were big games. For the first one we'd have only been top for 1 night. Literally meaningless. You can't bottle anything at Christmas. The season didn't start and end yesterday. We've been putting pressure on Spurs all season, and have 6 games to continue to do so. Were we mentally strong when we beat Wolves, while Spurs were dropping points? This was all of 1-2 weeks ago. This mentality stuff is something we're using to rationalize our disappointment. This is the strongest Villa team I've witnessed. We almost always follow up a defeat with a win, and almost always hold onto leads. These things are quantifiable. "We didn't win at X point in the season when Y made up scenario was on" is not unfortunately.
  4. Wasn't this the second time all season we've dropped points from a winning position? We're literally the most resolute team in the league in this regard.
  5. I'm not talking about individual results. I was of course disappointed with the result in isolation. I was referring to those posts about how we've "bottled" top 4. Top 4 was never ours to bottle in the first place. No sane person had us finishing in the top 4 and also winning a European cup. That's a season beyond our wildest dreams. Yet the dream is still on. You wouldn't know it from the way some of our fans are going on.
  6. This thread is insane. It's been almost 15 years since we finished 6th, let alone 5th or 4th. We haven't bottled anything, it's been a tremendous effort for us to even be in this position where we are still in with a good shout for 4th with 6 games to go. Also in a European quarter final to boot. This is the best season of my lifetime so far, even if it ends today. You would think we were Liverpool or something the way our fans go on.
  7. He pretty much played just like that against us but didn't have De Bruyne and Haaland with him
  8. Okay but I could easily see them winning their last 8 games.
  9. Yes, all 3 competitions will follow the same format. No dropping down competitions anymore either.
  10. Dias - Akanji - Gvardiol is 75% of their first choice defence and probably cost about £200m between them. A draw assumes we could have scored 4 goals on them, which is technically possible I guess but extremely unlikely. I don't think they have shipped 4 at any point under Pep, much less at the Etihad.
  11. Thought he had Konsa on toast all game and played in Alvarez and Silva many times with those reverse through balls that Ollie used to also waste for us. His shooting has always been hilariously bad though, except weirdly enough when he volleys it. He's scored some cracking volleys but when he has to cut inside and shoot it's almost always blocked or rolled tamely into the keeper's arms.

    Unai Emery

Forgot that Torres was rested too. The more I think about it, the more I think it was a masterstroke by Unai. We'll be as fresh a team as we can hope to be for the next 10 (hopefully 13) games. This is supposed to be the time of the year where the fixtures would take their toll on a team like ours, but we've essentially given some of our key players 2-3 week breaks, while also incentivising the fringe players to put a proper shift in. I expect to see the likes of Zaniolo, Duran and Lenglet more in Europe now, and be confident that we'll be getting good performances out of them.
  13. I'd keep him in the lineup in place of Diaby and have Rogers out on the left when McGinn comes back. He was really good yesterday. Dangerous on the counter.
  14. McGinn back raring to go. Leon and Youri rested. Dougie played about 90 combined minutes of football in 2 weeks. Zaniolo coming into some form. Ollie and JJ hopefully back for Brentford, with the former getting a much needed rest in the process. In a weird way, it's looking a lot more promising than before the break given how leggy our players were starting to look. I get the feeling Emery's squad and tactical management will help us over the line whereas Ange's lads are going to be gassed out in a few weeks.
  15. VT is going to basically be this until at least Saturday
  16. Jack Grealish when he takes a shot that isn't a volley
  17. This is what I see every time I read his posts
  18. You mean the old over-imaginative Villa fans trick
  19. Imagine we put that shift in with our main players and end up being completely gassed for the Brentford and Lille games, while still losing here today.
  20. His era of defending was more about getting your slab head on the end of crosses and getting CTE
  21. This was supposed to be a bad summer for City but they just casually signed Gvardiol who doesn't even start at CB and is locking down our club record signing from the LB position
  22. Of course Foden scores his first ever free kick against us.
