A lil bit of DA3 news

BioWare is 'aggressively' checking out Skyrim for inspiration on Dragon Age III, as the developer admits mistakes were made with the last game.

'[The next Dragon Age] is gonna have the best of features from the prior Dragon Age games, but it’s also gonna have a lot of things I think players are gonna find compelling from some of the games that are out now that are doing really well with more of an open world feel,' said BioWare's Ray Muzyka in a new interview with Wired.

'We’re checking [skyrim] out aggressively. We like it. We’re big admirers of [bethesda] and the product,” he said. “We think we can do some wonderful things,' he added.

Although Dragon Age: Origins was well-received by most role-playing fans its sequel was not. Although a decent game in itself many were upset at is apparent dumbing down of key role-playing elements and the fact that the whole story took place in just one city - albeit over a period of 10 years.

There's been no formal announcement about a new Dragon Age yet, but back in May BioWare started advertising for people to work on 'DragonAge3'.

What inspiration exactly BioWare might be taking from Skyrim is anyone's guess, but we'd be surprised if there was any attempt to make Dragon Age III an open world game.

Instead BioWare are more likely to be influenced by the fact that Skyrim was a pretty hardcore role-player at heart and didn't shy away from including more complex features such as inventory management and crafting.

BioWare's next release is sci-fi sister series Mass Effect 3 in March, so you're unlikely to hear too much about Dragon Age III until after that.

Curious. It would be quite a departure to make DA3 open world in comparison to the first 2 games. While they did have some pretty large environs, they were by no means 'open world'. Also how would that pan out in terms of the storyline? Both the previous games were heavily story driven, which were pretty good in both cases, wereas Skyrim (and open world games in general I guess) has a main story that you can completly ignore.

Sigh. If true, shows a woeful lack of direction on Bioware's part, desperately throwing elements of successful games from other developers into a franchise that just isn't compatible with aforementioned elements.

It's one thing renewing oneself by incorporating good ideas from other developers. But sacrificing the core tenets of what made Bioware such an esteemed developer in the first place is another thing altogether, and inadvisable.

DAIII: Inquisition has been officially announced

Dragon Age III: Inquisition announced for late 2013

Mass Effect creators BioWare have officially announced the third entry in the Dragon Age series, although they’re keeping very quiet about what formats it’ll be coming out on.

Dragon Age III will use a customised version of Battlefield 3’s Frostbite 2 graphics technology and will be released late next year, according to developer BioWare.

Executive producer Mark Darrah announced the game on BioWare’s blog and revealed that the studio has been working on it for ‘about two years’.

It’s been known for some time that BioWare is planning a Dragon Age III, but after the mixed (to put it mildly) reaction to the second game it’s been hard to guess what direction they might take the series in the future.

Originally intended as a spiritual sequel to Baldur’s Gate the second game veered off into action role-playing territory and saw many fans swearing off the series for good. In the blog you can see some nervous references to polling feedback and emphasising the team’s old school credentials.

In terms of actual hard information though there’s almost nothing, just a vague reference to ‘a more expansive world, better visuals, more reactivity to player choices, and more customisation’.

Previously though BioWare has spoken of being influenced by Skyrim, although they never made it clear in what sense.

What’s perhaps most interesting at this stage is what formats the new game will be on, because at least one of either the Xbox 720 or PlayStation 4 is expected to be released by the end of next year.

Officially BioWare and EA are not talking about formats, but the fact that they’re not ruling anything out at this stage is interesting in itself…

sauce

Would have to have a pretty major overhaul to get me interested...although if it does turn out to be one of the early PS4 titles then you never know...
