Lens:

OK I have a Nikon (its only the D60) and also have a 55-200VR lens and a 18-55VR lens.

Off to the far east soon and want to pick up a lens (possibly two),

but obviously don't want to waste money on things I really don't need

So what recommendation from the VT snappers?

EDIT: Apologies for the format of the post - large pic above means that we go way over page width

Only you know what you need Ian, depends if you want to go wider or longer I suppose.

200mm is long enough for most, if it were me I'd go for the Nikon 12-24mm (that should take you as wide as you'd ever need to go)

Three lenses is more than enough to be going away with

but if you did want a second I suppose a fixed focal length macro lens for close up work would be the next on my list (also usually good for portraiture)

Trade in the Nikon and buy a Canon :winkold:

Ok first is on a budget, second is not on a budget...

Tamron 17-50 2.8 - Nikon 17-55 2.8

Nikon 50 1.8 - Nikon 50 1.4

Nikon 85 1.8 - Nikon 85 1.4

Nikon 70-200 20.8 VR (I or II)

So the Tamron is the budget the rest not? ..... :-)

What (approx) would be good prices for these?

p.s. Tony and his cannon fetish - pah Nikon boys gang up on him and snap away at his embarrassment :-)

Think he means the left column is budget, right column not. Only they're not quite in columns.

What sort of photography do you want to be doing? eg if you want to take pics of wildlife you would want more telephoto capability, whereas you wouldn't with landscape photography.

To be honest Pete I want to do both close and distance, hence the possibility of two lenses. The ones I have seem to cover a lot but occasionally lack in things

and the opportunity to pick up cheaper lenses while in HK seemed too good to miss.

cant see the point in any of those lenses Damian has posted to be honest

theres no way Ian needs such specialist lenses, he's an amateur(no offence, most of us here are) and will be looking for versatility rather than pure quality of glass

I'll repeat myself with a bit more detail

Nikon 12-24mm f4 G AF-S IF-ED DX Lens (around £800 uk price) should complete the full range from Ultra wide to telephoto. Rarely will anyone need f2.8 or larger in an Ultra wide angle lens

Adding a macro lens like the Nikon 105mm f2.8 G AF-S VR IF ED Micro Nikkor Lens (around £600 uk price) will allow him to add macro to his full range of lenses and then you get into specialist lenses like the primes mentioned but I don't think Ian needs prime lenses for the level of photography that he (along with the rest of us) is aiming at.

Ian travels a lot and taking primes away would be a right pain in the butt imo, he needs to retain his flexibility but increase what his camera is capable of.

PS, yes I have both those lenses

Must admit I'm tending to use my Limux more and more these days

used to travel and take a back pack with my 450D , a wide angle lens , a 200mm lens ( i used to take a 300mm lens but the 200mm was a bit smaller and a nice trade off ) and the standard one that came with it .. and then spend ages changing between lenses

The Limux TMZ10 sort of does everything just as well and fits in my pocket ..probably not good enough for a professional but for holiday photo's etc i find it more than adequate .. the pre built settings fro sunset etc are top notch ...I used the starry night mode yesterday lent the camera against a paper-cup on the floor and set the exposure for 60 secs and even managed to get a photo of a building in the pitch black .. for sure the bloke next to me got a better shot but he required a small donkey to carry all his equipment , all i needed was a papercup :-)

Just come back from Nice again but this time I only took my TMZ10 too but I figuredI was going to spend much of the time on the beach as I'd snapped the place to death previously

Might post some photos later, used the fireworks setting for the first time this trip, managed to get a couple of ok ones

same shot taken with plastic cup and 60 sec exposure mode ..ok it won't win any prizes , but for a point and click and cheap camera you really can't go wrong ..
