bobzy
Obviously, football is dominated by the filthy rich clubs (and we're included in that sort of list, really) with more interest in the Saudi Arabian game than ever before and an ever decreasing amount of European teams likely to achieve ultimate glory. However, from the 'second team' thread, it does seem that there's at least a slight yearning to enjoy smaller clubs. Perhaps they're a local side, perhaps they're a family members' local team or maybe there's no real link at all. Away from the riches, these smaller sides provide perhaps much more relatable footballing successes and struggles - often with serious implications for them in the latter category. As someone who pretty much always roots for the underdog in any "neutral" game, I thought it'd be fitting to have a place to discuss the over or underachievements of the true minnows of football. Thankfully, the BBC Sport site has also produced a decent article regarding Faroese side KI Klaksvik, who have pretty remarkably knocked out both Ferencvaros and BK Hacken (Hacken in particular are pretty good goalscorers from memory). For added timing and interest, KI play at home tonight against Molde in the Champions League third qualifying round (19:45 UK time). Let's celebrate the minnows! "KI Klaksvik from the tiny Faroe Islands have been causing a stir across Europe this summer, and things are about to get even better. ... Even if KI are finally vanquished, though, they already have the safety net of becoming the first team in Faroes history to reach the group stage of a European competition. Elimination at this stage would result in a Europa League play-off berth, and even defeat there would lead to a spot in the Europa Conference League groups." El Zen
Crazy. Absolutely crazy. If they can hold on, they’ll likely be hosting Galatasaray in the next round.
