Popular Post The_Rev
Taken from an interview he gave today: Celtic's performance in Europe this season was a stark comparison to last season's outing, where they defeated Barcelona at home and progressed to the last 16 for only the third time in the club's history. Lennon maintained that Celtic are simply unable to keep up with the high spending of their Champions League opponents but would continue to seek out potential talent and profit further down the road. "It's not hard, it's impossible," said Lennon. "Barcelona's wage bill is £210m. Ours isn't a fraction of that. It's impossible. [full article: BBC] You know the guy who does sculptures of everyday objects by carving the lead of a pencil? Do you think we could get him to do one of a violin next? It's the only way there is going to be a violin small enough to represent how much sympathy I have for Celtic on this one. Financial inequality is ruining (or rather has ruined) football and it's a damn shame but correct me if I am wrong but have Celtic ever given a flying **** about financial inequality when they were the club benefiting from it? They have been able to dominate Scottish football for decades because they had more money than everybody else and have used that continued success to build a massive fan base. Currently Barcelona have a wage bill of £210m, Celtic's is in the region of £30m. All the other clubs in the SPL have wage bills between £3m and £5m. Isn't this just a case of what goes around comes around?
samjp26
Celtic in the SPL is the equivalent of a team like Everton playing in League One. Crap football team, crap football league - in my opinion they are lucky they even get a place in such a competition, the Europa League would be pushing it.
The_Rev
Scotland should be represented in the Champions League, they have as much right as any other UEFA member country. Celtic on the other hand probably have to look at themselves when it comes to the current state of the Scottish League because there is every chance them insisting on the lions share of everything in years gone by has led to a league nobody is interested in which has a TV deal representative of that fact, I mean how can Sky or BT or whoever sell subscriptions to that piece of shit? Rovers13
It's not like Scotland can ever support a top league though, just not enough people regardless of how you divide the money.
The_Rev
Agreed, but that doesn't mean the situation they are currently in isn't as the result of a colossal balls up.
samjp26
When I say they are lucky to be in the Champions League, I do not mean they shouldn't have the opportunity to be in the competition, I mean they are lucky to have qualified. As you say Rev, nobody is interested in the league, even more so now Rangers aren't in it.
Rugeley Villa
Its disgusting when you think of the huge gap in finances. Celtic are an enourmous club where has most championship clubs and some league 1 clubs are bigger than rest of that league.I also agree what goes round comes round
